JT and 88 had long stretches at 5v5 where they effectively accomplished nothing. With them lacking chemistry, it's a big reason I would consider moving 88. I'd move JT first but management won't have that difficult conversation.

Ship them both out. They can share a taxi to the airport if they don't want me to drive them there without getting a speeding ticket.

Ritchie cost us a 2nd less the value of one year of a bottom pair d. Now we wait to see what mrazek will cost us. Foligno cost us a 1st and 2 4ths for a few games. But lets keep blaming Lou 4 years later.
Lets enjoy the b2b 3 pick drafts under Dubas.
or the 12 picks in 2020!

or the 12 picks in 2020!

On the surface, I think he's had something like 2 more picks then he'd have by default but digging deeper, a lot of them are late round picks where you're far less likely to hit on the pick.

So yay for drafting as much as possible...it's very much a quantity in place of quality for the time being. I do hope Tverberg, Knies, Holmberg etc all break through though.

they look like exceptional prospects relative to where they were picked now. Gotta wait and see how they continue to develop now... Leafs are kind of due for a late round gem i think

If they grab a bottom 6 guy on Holmberg that's pretty good relative to the pick but I guess we've been lucky with Gunnar, Brown, Komarov and Engvall too. Just pick Swedes lol.

Kinda hoping Tavares will go the Spezza and Giordano route after this contract. If not....it's been a good run.

Yeah it all depends on his quality of play. I mean, the issue is all about impact to AAV so if he’s taking a league minimum and playing at a Spezza like level he can stay. But he’s not getting a $6 million plus deal on the next one, if there is one.

Potential Starters

  • John Gibson - 5 yrs @ $6.4M/yr
  • Jordan Binnington -5yrs @$6M/yr
  • Ville Husso - UFA
  • Jack Campbell - UFA
  • Darcy Kuemper - UFA
  • Marc-Andre Fleury - UFA
  • Semyon Varlamov - 1yr @ $5M/yr
Potential Backups and Tandem Types

  • Matt Murray - 2yr @ $6.25M/yr
  • Alexandar Georgiev - RFA
  • Casey DeSmith - UFA
  • Jonathan Bernier - 1yr @ $4.125M/year
  • Jake Allen - 1yr @ $2.875M/yr
  • Braden Holtby - UFA
  • Jonathan Quick - 1yr @ $5.8M/yr
  • James Reimer - 1yr @ $2.25M/yr
  • Alex Nedeljkovic - 1yr @ $3M/yr

So essentially a FA downgrade/lateral move from Campbell, or a trade option with cap hit implications that most here are divided on. Aside from Fleury, who doesn't want to play in Canada, the free agent route is not going to solve any problems and only serves stop-gap options that, aside from complete fluke, will be the second best goalie in a playoff series again.

Given that every FA option risks entering the season with a weakness in net, the only appealing option to me is banking on potential and upward trajectory - Husso. Otherwise, the trade market is a way better route for the starter position.

This is going to be a problem for a very long time until the Leafs prioritize drafting goaltenders earlier than the 4+ rounds. Yet this is the worst goalie draft in quite a while. This is why i'm less afraid of Gibson's 5 year term. The alternative is recycling tandem goalies (who can't steal a series) for half a decade until a prospect clicks.

????? In the very article you are quoting literally says that sources around the league reported that fleury Would come to Toronto

9 picks outside the top hundred but who's counting ?

Here's how's it is looking so far. We'd be lucky if the two finns hit.

Think he might be too good to acquire. Maybe if Andreas Johnsson hits UFA we can scoop him up cheap.

It's a weird balance. The balance between competing now, and the future. The future suggests that we will have three very good LW looking to join our team, either at some point this year, or next year. Knies, Robertson, and maybe Amirov if his health allows.

Sure, Bratt had a great season last year, but then, how can we afford what he's likely to get paid? $5 mill? minimum... maybe more? Where does that fit in? What do we trade for that? Why would NJD give that up? I mean, I've seen the rumours, they just don't make sense to me.

teams consistently in the top of the standings typically do have less picks, would u rather move core players to get more picks and finish lower in the standings?

Its obviously still unlikely (as are a majority of players taken in that range) but Tverberg, Rindell, Miettinen, and Ovchinikov have all looked really good relative to where they were picked. Amirov was progressing well and still has great potential. He just kind of got hit with something that nobody can really prepare for. Niemela has looked like a slam dunk pick so far.

Dubas, Shanny and the usual suspects say you can. So far they are wrong but Shanny, Kyle and Larry keep telling us that Lord Stanley is coming. What they do not tell you is you have to buy a ticket to the HoF to see it.

Great point. I am also confused. Wouldn't a 23 year old emerging star be someone NJ would like to keep considering where they are? It's odd

No idea what's going on. I'd bet he ends up signing long-term with them, and this smoke fizzles away.

Last year we were never going to be able to do it without Fred. Zach and Bogo.

This isn’t new

If there is anything going on in Leafs Land right now, it is an overblowing of our deficiencies and making our problems a lot bigger than they seem.

What you have described has not happened since like the Nonis days.

Cheaper UFAs would be DeSmith, Comrie, Hill, Holtby, Jones, Wedgewood, etc.

They may also mean cheaper caphits, but acquired via trade for a potentially highish price, which could include Blackwood, Georgiev, Stolarz (if they commit to going with Gibson), etc.

Tampa has 33% of their playoff goals spread across 4.5 mil of cap hit and this guy thinks the core is the problem.

Leaf problem is not how much cap they have in their core. They are miserable in most decisions that are non-core related.

I know he's not a popular choice but if we can send a bad contract the other way with a prospect I think Josh Anderson would be a great fit

He's exactly the type of player leafs are missing. He can be inconsistent but really a big body that can play top 6 or bottom 6
The would be a great fit if he played against the rest of the league like he does against us.

He must have the Leafs circled on the calendar and makes sure he's saved his energy for those games as he looks like prime Can Neely against us, while sleepwalking his way thru the rest of the season. Joining us I'd speculate he'd look like David Clarkson did in a leaf jersey
