You really shouldn't want Campbell back though. Great guy buy he was truly terrible from December onwards, including the playoffs. He's just not going to be worth the contract he signs for.I hated the Mrazek signing from Day One. I didn't expect him to be as godawful as he was, but I did have faith in Campbell to be the superior option (and things played out that way).
It seemed clear that making that commitment to Mrazek was going to make it very difficult to bring Campbell back. I don't know if Jack was willing to sign a long-term deal last summer, but getting that done should have been the priority if he was.
I think there's something to the theory that Dubas was trying to neuter Campbell's value by bringing in a guy to share the workload. If so, that obviously backfired spectacularly and a year later we're in a very sticky situation where we'll have to overpay Campbell while spending assets to shed Mrazek. Or keep Mrazek and basically just hope he rebounds. Or reinvent the goalie spot in a thin market with limited cap space. All bad options.
Dubas's handling of this goalie situation is exemplary of what I see as one his biggest flaws as GM: he waits too long to get contracts done and backs himself into a corner, ends up having to pay more in the long run as a result. He may figure out this goalie situation but it will take some wizardry or good fortune or both.

I think trying to bring Campbell back, but at $2.5-3 mil or so, is the right thing to do. He's a quality goaltender when he's not injured, and playing well. The problem of course, is he's had to fight through injuries. I don't know if that's his long-term fate, or if a new coaching staff can fix some of his injury woes.
But I think if you go with Campbell, you need another guy at $2mil or so, but someone who could challenge for top spot. Like a Blackwood, or Georgiev.. guys who have shown glimpses of being better, but for whatever reasons, haven't been.
Dubas does not have a good read on goalies. He kept Andersen going into 2021 after the CBJ loss where people said he was one of the main reasons for us losing and should have been dealt with.
'Canes signed Andersen two years $9mm.
Wonder if he would have signed that deal in Toronto, and again not show up in the playoffs?
I guess the good thing for Carolina is that there's only 1 year left on it.
Waddell mustn't have a good read on goalies.
Perhaps they should just overpay some long in the tooth goaltenders for the Marlies and then sign the best one to a NHL contract for the same amount after a couple months.
Fredlight quit on the team with an undiagnosed knee issue, He pulled the same garbage in Anaheim and again this year in Carolina. I don’t think there was a reasonable contract that would’ve been palatable to bring him back last year with everything that happened in consideration. We don't know what KD will do, except to probably nibble around the edges. He is really faithful to his own acquisitions and to the big 4 so there is a strong possibility only Mik is outbound among the skaters. Without making cracks about growing killer instinct internally or Keefe's future legendary status, if they actually feel they were that close why upset things except in goal? Jack is UFA so it isn't dumping his boy and Mrazek is a 1 year fail which we know Dubas doesn't protect the same way as his vets.
I am almost certain there will not be a Campbell Mrazek tandem next season and this is where the club will make their big move. In trying to figure out how they can run this group back, the obvious move is a big upgrade in net. No I don't think its Gibson because the club has had real challenges reading goalies although I guess if there is a new voice supporting that and they can get substantial retention its possible. I think here is where KD makes his splash and I am looking forward to seeing it.
Regarding Andersen he got injured in April so we don't know what he might have done for the Canes so do we really know he would be a one round guy for them? I wish they had resigned him for the Carolina deal but it didn't make much sense if they felt they had struck gold with Campbell.
Yyp pretty much. Imagine if a guy like Andy played as badly as Jack did for half the year. People who be calling for his head instead of saying lets sign him up long term. However since he is a nice guy people ignore his faults. You really shouldn't want Campbell back though. Great guy buy he was truly terrible from December onwards, including the playoffs. He's just not going to be worth the contract he signs for.
Was he steady at the end of the season though and into the playoffs? He lost the goaltending duel to Vasilevskiy who had a sub .900 save percentage and let in some really weak goals late in the series.Could it be that he was trying to play through injury? He went from very steady to awful to steady.
See my edit. I think he started high and eventually took what he could get and there was never any real discussions. I don't think he took the playoff off for an imaginary issue though.Fredlight quit on the team with an undiagnosed knee issue, He pulled the same garbage in Anaheim and again this year in Carolina. I really hope there is no plan on bringing back Kerfoot or Holl. Not because they are bad players but if they aren' going to move out the core guys, at the very least we have to make some significant changes to that secondary group.
You have to think that there are already a couple things in motion right now with the Leafs.
I've seen a couple of good suggestions about moving some pieces laterally to switch up the dynamics of the bottom 6. I liked Sissons recommendation. I've also brought up Scott Laughton from Philly.
What should be interesting is watching Florida.
Getting swept by a team that has had to battle for every win this post season isn't impressive.
Duclair's out and I think they'll try and swap Montour for a more defensively reliable guy. Neither of whom is particularly useful to Toronto.
i may say i understand it, or that Mrazek, when he's on is really good, but, that deal made zero sense from the second it was conceivedLots of people here defending the Mrazek signing for when it was made. I'm surprised at that. Right away it seemed a year too long and too expensive, and a lot of people said so. He is far from a proven commodity. The fact that he clearly was a leaf target is the reason we are now revamping our whole goalie evaluation team. Terrible signing, and there were red flags at the time too.
Flyers are ripe for a trading
I'm not sure Florida would be interested in our trash. Some noise around Bobrovski moving out of Florida today, which isnt surprising.
Just wondering if theres a number where he becomes an interesting option. Bob @50% for Mraz, is what made me wonder
I don't see a great fit between Leafs and Flyers but I think the Leafs would have interest in Frost in a scoring depth role if the Flyers would rather move on there.
