After sitting on it. I could see these possibilities given Dubies love for his former players.

Buyout - the Leafs sign him for 2M per for 2 years to replace Mrazek as backup.

or

Petr Mrazek + a B-Prospect or 4th/5th rd. pick for Matt Murray at 50% retained (3.125M per for 2 years)

or

Petr Mrazek straight up for Matt Murray (at 3.85-4M per for 2 seasons)

I looked up games played over the past 3 seasons - Murray has played 88 games regular season and playoff, Mrazek has played 79 games regular season and playoff. They also have similar save percentages. They actually line up fairly well with each other minus the contract being out of line.

Some fantastic tidbits from the real Kyper and Bourne show today from Kypreos

- Leafs have been talking to the Lyubushkin camp, looking to sign extension
- The feeling coming out of the exit meeting with Sandin was dissapointment. The Leafs didn't love his season, they expected more in terms of development.
- Leafs are targeting Nic Deslauries in the offseason, would like to sign him between 1.2-1.4 million

Not that this is surprising, but on #askCJ, Johnston says Nylander will be a Leaf on opening night

I get it, I am in the minority on this but to not even explore this trade baffles me.

Biggest reason is that he and JT don't really have chemistry.

Beyond that, you cannot afford to re-sign him and Matthews.

The "big 4" has resulted in a grand total of zero playoff wins. Other teams do not have these specific 4 players and win rounds, even cups. It's not this genius formula Dubas / other fans seem to think.

Explore...all I ask, if the deal sucks, don't do it.

Can’t tell if they would quietly shop him to avoid a big public media frenzy, or if they’ll just keep
Him

We have no idea if they have had discussions about every player on the team.
I don't want their strategy to be made public.

Should only be about 1 untouchable on the team.

To me they have to find 1 free agent and groom a couple prospects.

Oh, and a goalie might be in order.

Fair enough, CJ isn't the first one to be pretty much 100% confident 88 is a Leaf to start the year, you start to figure management has stated their intention.

Figure it would leak pretty fast if 88 was involved in trade talks.

Maybe they'll bring Galchenyuk back and do the Galchenyuk- Kerfoot - Nylander
line.
Grunt-Tavares-Grunt
line.

I mean, I don't think he's a grunt but I see Knies joining us by the end of the year, he's gonna get into the top 6, 9 at worst. I feel like his game translates pretty well as a JT partner.

I still think it’s going to be Gibson for mrazek and 1.

I wonder if that doesn’t happen. If we go witb

Mrazek 1 for Minny 2nd. Get cap space to drop back.

If they do keep Nylander I think they need to look for a centre that he could jive with .. it was obviously spotty with Tavares last season (at absolute best), but moving down to the third line didn't really work that well when he was on a line with Kampf ... He did well with Kerfoot but Kerfoot is a subpar centre and likely is dealt.

Move Kampf down to the 4th line that can step up in checking duties.

Problem is if Kampf is a match up centre, he's not getting traditional 4th line minutes.

It's still why I land on simply dealing Nylander. End of the day if 18M worth of cap space isn't gelling, it's a problem.

I think perhaps they have not tried Nylander on the LW enough.
He can be used either side, so isn't like they need a LW to play opposite Nylander.

They are probably strong enough to carry some prospects through the season.

Home ice didn't matter, the complementary players did.

Is there a centre in the system Nylander can carry on the 3rd. line?

Seems like Dubas is really doubling down on the team.
Really need Masai to come in and make some trades that actually improves the team chances in winning the Cup.

I think marner is the bigger contract issue.

Matthews is going to score with or without an $11mm linemate.

Well, one thing they could have tried for a little bit last year or even the playoffs is simply going back to

Matthews-88 and JT-Marner duos, if the net result is the Leafs are getting 2 lines consistently going, who cares?

They've never really given Willy and Matthews rope to find that chemistry they had when they first came into the league (when Marner was with Bozak and JVR). I'd like to see it.

I mean given how good Marner and Matthews were together in the regular season, it's kind of understandable ... but they need to try something different to give some looks in the playoffs.

Babcock never went away from Matthews-88 and Keefe won't break up Matthews-Marner...sometimes you do need to change it up.

I will say, both duos pretty much brought it vs Tampa, regular season JT-88 was underwhelming but playoffs after a real slow first few games, it got going.

Our depth in bottom 6 was disappointing. Blackwell scored 1 goal and Kampf scored a few but overall, our bottom 6 didn't do much. When I say scored...I also mean beating a goalie, not Mikhayev empty netters. It's why I don't care to re-sign Mikhayev, 3 playoff series, zero times beating a goalie.

Been a while but we have to remember the goalie didn't know who was going top self when Nylander and Matthews were attacking.

doesn't matter how much work marner does his shot is never going to equal Nylander's.

I don't think many are talking about it but Palat has been having a heck of a playoff run for the Bolts.

16 games - 8 goals, 6 assists, 14 points.

He's been a strong playoff performer for his career .. paces 28 goals/82 games in the playoffs (and 55 points). better than his regular season numbers

Pending UFA - he's 31 which makes for an interesting contract come free agency.

The scoring depth, for me, was always a question mark this season when you have Kampf as your third line centre (ironic considering he did score in the playoffs).

They need to find a way to get more physical AND more offense .. not sure what that looks like.

I like that Lyubushkin and Deslauriers are targets. Trade Holl to recoup a 2nd and sign Lube around 1.5M per to be the 7th defenseman. Deslauriers can replace Simmonds and actually bring a game to game physicality that I'm not sure Simmer is up for. Maybe they can get a late pick for Simmonds. He's pretty cheap and brings the grit.
