Why deslauriers over Clifford or simmonds really at this point. Sure he could be better. But how much?

Also if sandin wants out….. then trade him. He is a good chip. Maybe now chych run is a possibility?

Get a good young forward for him?

Sandin doesn't want out, the report is that leafs were disappointed in him and wanted him to take a bigger step.

Some of these guys may work if we are going for a shutdown line, but I feel like the 4th line should be guys who can provide depth scoring. These guys are not providing depth scoring.

We have to see who fits our cap structure and can do that, but fortunately we have some guys like Robertson, Abruzzese, Steeves, Holmberg, and Anderson who could bring that for cheap.

On top of that, I feel guys like Tierney and Namestnikov are the kinds of guys we will target. Maybe Zach Sanford if we feel like his skating could work, or even a Victor Rask.

Then there are some non-tendered RFA's. Kunin may be too pricey for the 4th line (if he is non-tendered), but I think he could work on the 2nd line with Tavares and Nylander. Maybe Adam Gaudette gets non-tendered by OTT, and he would be a nice competitor for a 4th line spot.

I think the main thing is that we want guys who have shown their offensive potential and maybe have struggled recently, but are hungry to make the most out of an opportunity, even if it is somewhat limited. If they can provide a bit of two-way value on top of it, then even better.

Of course, a guy like Aston-Reese could be brought in for the Kampf line and then Kase moves to the 4th line, so we should still look at shutdown guys as well.

I don't think the players brought in will have had good offensive seasons, it's all in the scouting. Similar to how they identified Kampf and Kase last off-season. There are a lot of names that could help, too many to list. Leafs have done very well identifying forwards to plug holes.

I don't think the Leafs will sign more than 2 forwards though. For my money, the Leafs will target a top 9 LW that can move up and down the lineup, and a bottom line center. It's all they really need. The hard part is finding the best ones.

I don't value physicality super high but I do think they could sign players that really gives them that and that can chip in. There's also the trading route instead of signings.

Really though. I don’t see how he would have been disappointing. He crushed his minutes. Did they Give him higher minutes that he failed?

I remember Lilly having issues with muzz. I remember sandin and Lilly having a bad game against the rangers.

I really don’t remember issues there. I’m honestly trying to remember

Deslauriers led the league in fights 3 years ago and he was 2nd in majors this year. He was also 6th in hits in the league this year. He is well ahead of the other two when it comes to game to game physicality. It felt a bit like Simmonds disappeared at times this season. With the constant energy coming from Deslauriers it should have a different look to it. I just think he'd do a better job at playing the role he is paid for than the other two, Deslauriers is in his prime, Simmonds and Clifford are on their way out.

I understand that people want toughness spread throughout the lineup and not just on the periphery. But, they can still do both, depending on trades there could be a few more spots open.

Sandin had a around 100 minutes total with Muzzin, Brodie and Rielly. His numbers with them were not so good. So I am assuming he had a hard time when moved up the lineup.

His results with Liljegren and Dermott were spectacular and pretty good with Holl.

Sure ok. But 100 min total is like 5-6 games with different partners.

Not sure how that makes sense to rag on the kid in an exit interview

I agree but I also think they set high standards for players they believe in.

Deslauriers vs Clifford/Simmonds is like comparing Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck 4 years ago.

Clutterbuck hits guys with the puck, Matt Martin finishes checks 3 seconds after the puck is gone.

Also. The CJ quotes about going after a 1.5-2 million goalie makes little sense

Like who? Even IF you go to 3 million

Ned. Hill. Samsonov. Vanacek. Kakohonen blackwood?

Would they try for blackwood and like a Comrie?

I guess that would put them in line for better FA?
On forward and d?

Trade option -- Blackwood fits a lot. I think he's got the most upside to bounce back on a better team and his cap hit is very good for the Leafs. Korpisalo might be an option but mostly a back-up target I think.

For signings, I would say Fleury on a 1 year deal could work but not sure he'll take that low. Casey DeSmith has been consistently good but not great for awhile, could sign him for what they wanted to give Campbell. Georgiev is also another option if he's not qualified.

I have no idea what to expect from Dubas for the goaltending. It does make me nervous.

Yeah agreed. Katchouk is gonna be hard to get but I have to think Dubas will try since there is a Soo-hoo connection.

Other players to Look at besides ZAR and Katchouk

Curtis Lazar (Led Bruins in hits this season)
Miles Wood (If Unqualified)
Tyler Motte
Noel Acciari
Michael Raffl
Carter Rowney

Trade Targets:
William Carrier
Kevin Rooney

Lazar should be our #1 target for 4c. The other UFAs, meh.

William Carrier is a good thought, but add in Keegan Kolesar from Vegas too. As an RFA, he might be a better target. Kevin Rooney, meh.

4th liners like ZAR, Acciari and Lazar should be targeted. Tenacious quick skaters that finish their checks (and more importantly can take a shift in the playoffs). Simmonds can be kept around in a rotation on the 4th line to keep everyone fresh but as we have seen, he has no role in the playoffs.

With all of the discussion of going with cheap AAV goalies, the only ones that I think I would be comfortable with are DeSmith and Blackwood (unless they are going to grab someone on ELC that looks like a stud - unlikely). Maybe Georgiev if he goes unqualified? Is there potential that actually happens?

Let’s get and try any of these cheap goalies bc our team play great defence and can make a Zamboni Driver looks good.
Honestly, I really hope these rumours of cheap goalies are a smokescreens bc it is scary to think Leafs having them in net for playoffs.

The team defense has been quite good the past few seasons.

Is this take from 2018?

If Washington can make the playoffs with Vanacek and Samsonov, why can't the leafs with some b/c tier goalies.

Accumulate cap space, and make moves at the TDL.

conservative and 23 man roster and accumulate cap space - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Yeah I mean it’s not unfair thought process. This team kept winning almost all the way through a lengthy, like 3 month, period where our goaltending was basically worst in the NHL.

That said, making the playoffs is just the appetizer. Those players that you coast to the playoffs with in net still need to be able to bring it when it counts.

Planning to have to buy a goalie upgrade at the deadline is both incredibly difficult and wasteful asset wise

It went under the radar but he re-signed with CBJ.

Leafs have a somewhat impatient and sometimes unstructured development path for prospects. How did Sandin go from non NHLer to PP1 in the Montreal series? Of course if he's not Adam Fox by year two he's going to be disappointing. Same with Robertson. Top 6 option for the Columbus series at 19, and now he's being developed on a slower track.

Seems like Dubas is really doubling down on the team.
Really need Masai to come in and make some trades that actually improves the team chances in winning the Cup.
The core isn't the problem, its the supporting cast he's gotten wrong the past few years. Losing Spezza to sign Sam Gagner is the exact opposite move he needs to make on the 3rd and 4th line.

I wonder if this has anything to do with Sandin not appearing in any playoff games this season? Part of that might have to do with the team having another short run there. I also think Dubas had to fortify that area of the team given the past injury to Muzzin.
