He definitely made much more than a 7 million dollar impact on their team. Without him, I don't think they would've made the playoffs. They were a two-player team and Hyman. I think he allowed Hyman to go back into the shadows and play without such high expectations.

And I think that’s Holland’s pressure now. They just made the Conference final so expectations will be lofty.

He has the choice of putting money to Kane, improving the defense, or goaltending..

Either way I think their cap is going to get ugly after this season.

I really don't think they can. Mercer 42 points in rookie season, Mcleod young good 3rd line C and Blackwood, potential to be a good starter, and cap space.
How much more do you think he can get?

I bet the Devils are really high in Mercer and they want guys that can contribute now.. hence why the 2OA pick is available

If you can upgrade from Mercer to Nylander wouldn’t you do it though? Especially if you want to compete right away.

Why would you want any of that?

I don’t really think that roster is all that much better than our current one, and we’d be down a 1st and our second best prospect.

Pretty amazing how we give by far the best piece in the Nylander trade, and the best piece we get back is an anti-vaxxer who can't even play in Canada.

Reminding me why I hate this thread lol

I’d be all over something around Nylander for Bertuzzi if Bertuzzi was vaccinated.

If the leafs believe in John Gibson.

Trades:

Toronto receives: John Gibson ($5.4M)
Anaheim receives: 2023 1st, Topi Niemela, 2024 2nd, Petr Mrazek

Toronto receives: Martin Necas, Vasili Ponomariev, 2023 1st
Carolina receives: William Nylander

Toronto receives: Tor 2022 2nd, Tor 2024 3rd
Seattle receives: Alex Kerfoot

UFA/RFA signings:

Rickard Rakell - $4.5M x 4 years
Martin Necas - $3M x 3 years
Pierre Engvall - $2.5M x 2 years
Sandin/Liljegren - $1.75M x 2 years
3rd line RW budget - $2M
4th line budget - $2.5M

Lineup:

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Tavares - Necas - Rakell
Engvall - Kampf - $2M UFA
UFA - UFA - UFA

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Liljegren
Giordano

Gibson
Woll

Approximate cap space: $1M

Using a cheap backup to accrue more cap space.

Not a perfect lineup. But if they believe in Gibson, then an elite goalie mitigates any issues on offence and gives the team time to figure it out.

Looking forward to seeing him gamble it all away.
If SJ ends up getting out of the contract after arbitration, that might mean more teams will be in the hunt for Kane because they know if he screws up off ice the signing team can void the deal and walk away. That is the only reason I can see someone throwing serious money at him. Otherwise you would be risking bringing in a guy who 3 other teams were happy to be rid of.

Still worried about the big bad flu eh?
I'm vaxed btw, but literally haven't thought of this shit again, till now.

Reminding me why i hate people.

Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with what any of us think. It's about the rules.

They could drop all rules about vaccination, but what if there's a new variant people are panicking about next fall and they get very strict.

The risk of acquiring an unvaccinated player is too great.

Fair. I won't derail any further.
I get the hesitation.

One random novelty name I’d like to throw in as an offseason target: Kody Clark. Sounds a little like Mason Marchment before he popped off and I wonder if some minor string pulling could get him out of the Washington system and onto the Marlies.

Here's what I came up with. Nothing huge, just simple cap clearing things and reloading for another shot with the same core, but with different goaltending.

-Kerfoot to the Stars for a 2nd (#50)
  • Very straight forward. I think he fits that team very well. Leafs get cap space and then...
-Mrazek, a 2nd round pick (#50 from Stars) and Malgin to the Hawks for Khaira
  • A good pick and decent youngish player to take on a dump for a couple seasons. Khaira should be healthy and I think really gives the Leafs a solid and big energy 4th liner.
-Holl to the Blue Jackets for Korpisalo and our 4th round pick back.
  • I feel like this is pretty fair? Holl would give them a good boost defensively, Leafs get a cheap goaltender that has struggled badly last couple seasons but has shown some form of ability in the past. Could use a change of teams.
I'd look into moving Muzzin but I feel like he's too good for the value they'd get back.

Hard to know which free agent is available and what not a good month ahead but the big hole right now is goaltending. I liked Mrazek and Driedger this time last year so perhaps my goaltending scouting eye isn't great. My best bet would be Kuemper will be the #1 target.

After re-signing Engvall, Sandin and Liljegren (bridged), Leafs should have around 10M in cap space with these moves. I don't think Kase will be back unless he takes another 1 year deal around the same money he made. Big need is obviously a goaltender, at least 1 good top 9 forward and a bottom pairing/depth defenseman.

Kerfoot value is more or less fine, although I think we could get another pick out of it.

Holl's return is nowhere near good enough and that is way too much to dump Mrazek.
