Ilya Mikheyev

The 27-year-old UFA winger’s agent, Dan Milstein, indicated to me Monday that he’s planning on talking to Leafs management within a couple of weeks.

Milstein says the Leafs are a “world-class organization’’ who have treated Mikheyev very well, so they’re open to having the conversation about potentially re-signing.

Of course, things are always tight under the cap for the Leafs, and after putting up a career-high 21 goals in just 53 games this past season, Mikheyev has clearly earned a raise on the $1.645 million he earned this year. At the very least, he’s probably looking at $3.5 million a year on the open market, and I just don’t think the Leafs can do that given their cap situation.

Let’s see what comes of that conversation between both sides, but I find it hard to envision the Leafs being able to come up with a contract that works.

What the hell is this Gagner rumour?
Is he still any good?

It's from Pierre LeBrun

31 points in 81 games last year, almost all even strength in 13:37 a game. Otherwise, soft as butter, poor in the dot,

Being in a Leaf uniform will help him break Sittler's record this time? For a cup of coffee or so, his dad was a former Leaf? :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, he could be serviceable if the contract is cheap. Couldn't say I'd like or dislike the idea too much.

Anyone have insights on Cooper Marody?

He's a group 6 UFA from the Oilers. 6' right shot winger draft in 2015 .. PPG player in the AHL multiple times over a 4-5 year AHL career so far.

Wonder why the Oilers haven't given him more than 7 games.

Might be worth a sign?

Ganger wouldn't be my first choice.

That said, 31 points at 13ish min TOI and had 65% defensive zone starts.

He wouldn't be the worst option as a Spezza replacement for some skill in the bottom six.

Though I suspect most folks (myself included) wouldn't mind some guys there with a bit more of a bang to their game

This gives us plenty of cap space to carry a 13th forward and 7th defenceman. Also allows us to make a big splash at the trade deadline and gives us cap space moving forward to re-sign pending RFAs/UFAs.

Acciari actually seems like the kind of player that would fit well. Tenacious, can PK, play centre or wing, and has some offense to his game. Although I don't know his health situation.

Engvall-Kampf-Acciari could be a very effective checking line at times.

Interesting name that I've never heard before. Here's an Athletic article on him (not behind a paywall, for whatever reason):

On his reputation of being a poor skater:

Corey Pronman is an independent source on these things and has spent countless hours observing prospects and their foot speed. In the summer of 2019, he talked about Marody’s skating while ranking the player No. 9 on the organizational prospect list. Pronman described Marody as “full of skill and offensive creativity.” He went on to say: “His skating was pointed out as a big flaw by scouts when he was younger. He’s not fast, but he skates fine now, in my opinion. Even though he’s not the biggest or quickest, he looks able to handle the NHL pace and physicality, and was very good at the AHL level.”

I think it’s fair to suggest that Marody’s speed will need to be compensated for. Perhaps he moves to the wing at the NHL level or is surrounded by fast wingers who can be deployed as forecheckers and in recovery. I believe Pronman’s words carry the day. Speed won’t derail Marody’s career, although it may result in a position change.

The author argues his closest comparison is Mason Appleton.

(Caveat: The article is from July 2020. No idea how he's performed over the last two years, other than the fact that his production didn't dip).

Thanks! Sounds like he could be solid in a depth role, maybe third line winger upside that can provide some offense.

Can someone tell me the appeal of trading for Puljujarvi? It's basically a less talented Laine. Lazy defensively and didn't make an impact on the Oilers 3rd line.

Big pass from me.
Think I heard all of this about Nischuskin when he was in Dallas, now look at him. If you can get Puljujarvi and surround him with the talent we got then I don't know why you wouldn't try him out, especially when he's not gonna kill our cap.

He's got draft pedigree and depsite a rough start like a guy whose finally started to find his groove offensively. He's also probably going to have a cheapish next contract.

Seems like a low risk potentially high reward option for me. Edmonton doesn't exactly have the best track record developing struggling talent, so I'd like to see what he can do elsewhere

I think Appleton would be great on the 3rd line and his caphit is easy to fit.
Helly should be No.1 target if he is available.

It would be. Puljujarvi isn't much of an offensive threat but he's a really good 2-way forward at the very least. Seems like a bigger version of Kerfoot really.

I would describe him as a Mikheyev with a worse operating system and better raw tools.

Really don't understand why some here are selling Willie at a huge discount price.

I won't even trade Shane Wright for him at this moment, b/c Wright would be lucky if he can be like Hirsher if not he is going to Nuge. OFcourse, this is my view at this moment.
