I don't trust 38. That's way too old to bank on his norris year. When you get into that high 30's, every year you age is a big decline.

Plus look at the teams we're facing. Last thing we need is another addition going down like Muzzin. His body is 38 even if his skills is still 35.

For once let's go for the younger guy. Our main grit forward is already equivalent to 38 for the role required of his body.
ye i get it, but if the price isnt high i think there are alot worse options out there. just pointing out he has played well late into his career :)
and maybeeee it helps brodie play better which is probably more important.

Great, Leafs are about to trade a 1st for Gio after that dumb Chiarot trade.

Praying for Lindholm if we can only get a rental.

If the leafs can't grab Lindholm then they should stand pat because Giordano isn't good anymore and d like soucy or Middleton won't move the needle enough. They won't stand pat though and our deadline will be Giordano and someone like Motte. More wasted assets from our fantastic gm.

I didn't say they play good defence I said their blueline is good. Defence is F + D + G not just one.

why do you think their numbers are like that then? It even better than Leafs.
No idea but they are 2nd last in the division for a reason. Analytics can only tell you so much.

We would be doing pretty bad if we didn't have a top tier offense and we had Campbell/Mrazek's goaltending the entire year.

Gio is definitely not the guy we should be after imo.

Provided the price is commensurate with his age and how much of a stepback he's taken, then maybe it's fine, but I really hope we don't go that route.

Just chiming in after seeing the Chiarot trade… I mean these prices are sure not indicative of a “buyers market”.

Really, really glad we didn’t pay that price for Chiarot. We will see what it takes for Gio - contrary to some I do believe he would be a big add here.

wanted Gio until I saw him play recently. Forget the aging experienced players. Bring in youth with energy. Middleton is perfect and you don’t have to throw away a 4th for salary retention. Mayfield would also work.

Meh. If the other buyers stay firm and say F off to the Chiarot price, then it can't set a new market price. They can always counter with Mansons package too.

Florida paid the "we're shit scared of Marner" price for Chiarot after seeing our series. That price will stay exclusive to them.

K, but where are you playing Middleton in the lineup? Reilly, Muzzin, Sandin all ahead of him on the left. Sure if Sandy shifts to the right (hasn’t looked great there) then you can slot him in 3LD, and assumption is you’re either playing Sandin on 2RD, 3RD, or you’re sitting him.

I think Soucy or Middleton would be a great get for the right price. Are you giving our GM $hit for moves he hasn't even made? LOL. Thanks for playing.

Only way we make a play for any defenseman is if we move Dermott elsewhere, and I don't see that happening unless someone is paying up for him now (pick-wise) or we use him to get a goalie. Otherwise, we will keep him for our depth, save the cost on someone else, and move him in the offseason.

Gotta be Holl or Dermott gone in a deal, no?

I don't think they'd be dumb enough to ship out Lily/Sandin... I don't see many situations/trades where that would work out

Listening to the latest Leafs Report pod. Mirtle flat out says he's inquired about Flurey. Says Leafs poked around at it but his sources have outright said it won't happen. Guessing he won't wave or the price is too high.

Mentions the Leafs have talked/are talking to a bunch of teams about a goalie trade.

So seems like good odds something happens

I could see Sandin or Lilly going in a package for Chychrun.

Sandin, Robertson, Mrazek, 1st.

For

Chychrun, Wedgewood.

Dumps a horrible contract, upgrades our D significantly with a cost controlled young stud, provides us with a dependable backup option who has put up better than descent numbers on a horrible ARZ team.

Yes we lose 2 young players but gain 1 back who is a proven top 4. Yes we lose a first that will be in the bottom 10picks of that round.

Do it Dubie! 😄

You move out Dermott you still don't touch your top-6 at the moment. So it has to be more significant. I could see a deal involving either Dermott or Holl with additional pluses like picks, prospects, for a top4 D, but otherwise why even bother. I can't see Middleton unless we have a 3RD open slot, and that means either Sandin's playing 2RD or he's playing 3RD and Boosh is either 2RD or pressbox. Either option sucks.

Well I think it would more be we move out Dermott and we pick up a new depth LD. That could be Middleton (I don't think he is good enough to be in our top 6), but obviously not at that asking price. I am not talking about a Giordano or a Lindholm here. It would be a Kulak from MTL for example.

I personally wouldn't touch our top 6 unless Muzzin is not returning. We already added Lyubushkin. That is the main addition and short of moving Dermott and directly replacing him, I don't see anything happening back there. I can see us adding some kind of forward (doesn't need to be anyone amazing) and then focusing on goaltending.

Nothing against Zacha, but adding to the third line would be stupid. That is one of the areas of the team that is actually excelling. The needs on this team are in goal, defense, and second and fourth line left wings.
Nothing against the original quote but more to what you said.

Exactly... and it goes in that order too.

32 thoughts:

3. Still in the market for a left-shot defender: Boston, Carolina, Los Angeles, Rangers, St. Louis and Toronto.

4. Toronto GM Kyle Dubas continues to indicate he does not want to trade his top prospects for a rental. And, he does not want to move the team’s first-round draft choice for the third time in four years. We’ll see how the Chiarot deal adjusts the market. I believe Lindholm is the Maple Leafs’ top target, although they’ve also taken long looks at Giordano, Philadelphia’s Justin Braun, Dallas’s John Klingberg and San Jose’s Jacob Middleton. Travis Dermott and Justin Holl have been on the market for months, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Dermott is given a fresh start, regardless of what else happens in the next few days.

5. Completely insane Toronto prediction: Zdeno Chara. The Maple Leafs like veterans with great attitudes. Wayne Simmonds. Jason Spezza. Joe Thornton. Ron Hainsey. Obviously, Chara would have to want to do it. The Maple Leafs wouldn’t mind some blueline meanness. He’d qualify.

6. Toronto is also looking at fourth-line changes. They were committed to getting Simmonds to 1,000 games and, as a long-time Spezza fan, I’d love to see him get the 10 points he needs for 1,000. But they’ve quietly looked into bolstering that trio. They’ve talked to Vancouver about Tyler Motte. As per Irfaan Gaffar, Tampa Bay’s been on Motte, too. Prospects Nick Abruzzese and Matthew Knies are possibilities after their NCAA seasons are over.

7. Finally, on goaltending: Erik Källgren — Swedish for “saviour”? — brought Toronto stability on Tuesday night against Dallas. Edmonton and Minnesota have looked at the goalie market and decided against it, feeling the acquisition cost is too high for the potential solution. There are also teams that feel plugging in a goalie this late in the season is too risky. In Edmonton’s case, GM Ken Holland felt it didn’t make sense as the Oilers slipped toward the playoff cutline. You’re not, he said, going to trade your best picks or prospects if not good enough to contend for the Stanley Cup. I wondered if Toronto would feel the same way as Boston closed in, but the Maple Leafs are far from conceding, even though some private models are less kind to their overall defensive play than public ones. The win over Dallas tied them for fifth in the NHL with a .675 points percentage, and they believe that is a true representation of who they are. They also have a potential option Edmonton didn’t — Marc-Andre Fleury. If the Maple Leafs go down that road, it’ll come down to whether or not Fleury thinks he can win there. A number of you tweeted at me about the possibility of John Gibson ... I don’t think so.

8. Dubas has one piece of information the rest of us don’t: true intel on Jack Campbell’s health. A rib injury is not a small thing. If you’ve suffered one, you can barely sit in an office chair, never mind try the splits on a Nikita Kucherov breakaway. Word is everyone’s operating under the belief Campbell will make a healthy return.

28. A couple of sources suggested they don’t believe Varlamov will go anywhere. We will see.
