Also I wonder how much expectations weight in Dubas' mind. As in obviously another first round exit likely sees him fired. But what if they get to the second round? What's his job security like?

I could see him selling the farm if it was a 'Cup or bust' scenario but that doesn't appear the case based on their comments/actions leading to the deadline, so he is ensuring he doesn't sacrifice too much of the future.

I know there’s this fairly common sentiment out there that a first round exit is the end of Dubas, but I’m really not that sure that is actually true tbh. Either way though, if he got fired he’d land on his feet without question, so I don’t think the possibility changes his approach to the deadline much, if at all.

We have very few draft picks and we're looking down the barrel at Florida or Tampa in the 1st round and then Florida or Tampa in the 2nd round. Save the assets and build for next year, this ones not worth spending assets on. We already did well with the Lybushkin trade anywyas.

Not sure if San Jose is really interested in trading Adin Hill but a package including him and Middleton could be interesting.

Nice of Florida to ruin the market:facepalm:
Florida is all-in and rushing their window. They might not be able to afford Huberdeau's raise. If they find a way to make it work, they'll be just as cap strapped as us with an extremely overrated defensive group outside of their top pair and no 1st round pick for two straight years. Their pool is headlined by Denisenko (bust territory), a recently graduated Tippett who is on the outs, and Samoskevich. Lindell was a slam dunk though.

Problem is that they are now a legitimate nightmare playoff matchup in the short-term. They are going to abuse teams. Even if you beat them, you're limping away with numerous injuries.

If we're going big it has to be Lindholm. No one else worth the "big package" on D. Otherwise go for the "well oiled machine" approach and target the Middletons of the league, pun intended.

Chiarot doesn't remotely scare me, I think he is the 3rd best LD on that team already (Behind Weegar/Forsling).

It pleases me to know the Leafs interest fizzled in Chiarot cause I don't want another Foligno mistake. 2nd + B prospect is probably the highest I would go for a rental outside of Lindholm. Otherwise I want term.

I think at this point any sort of big move needs to get approved by Shanahan. They'll both win or be fired together.

They also have to re-sign Weeger after next year as well as Huberdeau and their only big expiring contract is Hornqvist .. Plus they won't have the cash to re-sign Marchment this year. And Lundell should get a nice contract in 2 seasons as well.

I mean they had a short-is window with the cost of Barkov and Huberdeau going up, so I guess they're really going for it.

Yeah idk, with the goaltending situation the way it is and the insane market prices if we don't make a big move I'm fine with it

Yeah prices are not appealing at all for rentals. Cannot believe the Chiarot return. Wondering if we should not swing the fences and get someone with term? We have to win, and Matthews is up in two years. So instead of spending premium assets on rentals pay a little more and get someone locked up on D. I would love to circle back on someone like Chychrun, and maybe move out Muzzin in the off season.

Let Canes get Gio. We always do the old man route. Tired of it. We already have our token old man Spezza. One less suitor for Lindholm.

Gio has turtle neck plek written all over it.

Just stay in there to drive the price up though. Then pull out last second and attack Lindholm full force.

Gio is the one rental I’d be kicking tires on. Perfect candidate for a Spezza contract moving forward.

Price has to be fair and a 1st + would be bad. Not as bad as Foligno, but still a black mark. Problem is these captains fetch inflated returns from contenders.

If a 2nd + Hirvonen level prospect gets it done, fine.

i mean gio won the norris playing with brodie at the tender age of 35, i think brodie/gio and rielly/boosh could be a steady grp

Florida has definitely been busy today as they proceed with the all-in approach. They added a most recent Cup finalist in Chiarot and paid a price in doing so. The Jarnkrok trade wasn't too shabby for either of Calgary or Seattle as well. The floodgates are opening now.

I don't trust 38. That's way too old to bank on his norris year. When you get into that high 30's, every year you age is a big decline.

Plus look at the teams we're facing. Last thing we need is another addition going down like Muzzin. His body is 38 even if his skills is still 35.

For once let's go for the younger guy. Our main grit forward is already equivalent to 38 for the role required of his body.
