If we're going to LTIR Muzzin until the playoffs and use the room for an addition, I don't mind swinging for Chychrun and figuring out the cap in the off-season.

Whether Muzzin back or not, we should assume and prepare for the worse

2 concussions are not a good thing for an aging physical defensemen

Even if he comes back, how effective is he going to be ?

I know nobody wants Tie around but if you want a player that gives a f*** and will drag people into battle when times get tough, it's Max Domi.

He has a grand total of 3 assists in 10 playoff games, can he drag himself into battle first? We have enough guys who can't seem to finish in the playoffs.

Maple Leafs Passed on John Klingberg Trade - The Hockey Writers

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking at John Klingberg and decided to pass. However, the NHL insider said the asking price was likely too high, or the fit may not have been right. Friedman’s 32 Thoughts podcast was recorded hours before another dreadful defensive showing resulting in a 5-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. To make matters worse, Jake Muzzin sustained another injury. So Toronto may need to reconsider the idea and pay up.

When Klingberg reportedly wanted out of the Dallas Stars organization in early January, of course, the Maple Leafs were included in possible trade destinations. Firstly, because every trade rumour must include Toronto and secondly because Justin Holl’s play has been inconsistent all season. That said, it didn’t seem too realistic that Klingberg could be coming to Toronto for several reasons. He is a free agent this summer who is carrying a $4.25 million cap hit, and the blue and white don’t need another offensive defenseman.

Friedman said, “one of the guys Toronto looked at over the last month is Klingberg. He is someone they considered. But they didn’t do it.” There has been speculation that Dallas is looking for a top prospect and a first-round pick. “For Toronto, they were looking for D. I think they decided that if they were doing a rental, they weren’t going to be trading a first-round pick for it. I also don’t think they were doing one of their top prospects for a rental.”

These factors and others (getting rid of Nick Ritchie’s contract) led Toronto to deal with the Arizona Coyotes to acquire Ilya Lyubushkin. “Lyubushkin is a good fit for them. He is a right-hand shot. He is not much of an offensive player, but he is a pretty good defensive player, and he is physical. He is not a guy who is going to wow you with his speed game, but he knows where he is and fits at the bottom of their D. I think it is a really good pickup for them,” said Friedman.

I would think the Leafs would have no problem moving their 1st. and a top prospect for a RFA or termed defender.

For a rental I agree, they should stay away, heck if it costs too much I'd rather see them sell than buy.

If it's 2017-2019 Klingberg I'm all for it. On ice impact is more important than labels. If we get Hitchcock system Klingberg it will put us over the edge (assuming goalies show up)

Edit: The "if" makes the price too high though.

I still believe our best deal is with Chicago.

To Toronto-
Fluery 50%
Murphy
Hagel

To Chicago-
Mrazek
Kerfoot
Holl
Amirov
1st Round Pick

This was always coming. As much as I love the Muzzin trade, and would do that again, it was a 29 year old D man at a high acquisition cost. Honestly surprised he didn't start to fall off sooner given his past, but you were only ever getting a few impactful years out of him.

Wishing the best for Muzzin, but the Leafs need to take this opportunity to make a one-shot, single purchase of a prime aged D-man who can bring a unique/lacking dimension to the backend for 3-5+ years. Pre-Muzzin injury, I wouldn't have had that mindset.

No more half-measures going broke, no more liquidating futures for players outside of the core's age range, etc. I'd sing a diff. tune if the Leafs didn't waste two .50 cal bullets on Barrie and Foligno.

You need to pay the piper now and it's going to hurt but otherwise a retool will be on the horizon.

Chychrun + Crouse

Let's get it

Rielly - Brodie
Chychrun - Babushka
Muzzin - Holl
Seems too perfect of a situation
Chychrun is at a lower contract
We get to try him this year and add Muzzin in the playoffs and if chychrun is legit then there’s a summer move for Muzzin
Give up assets on chychrun and get assets back with Muzzin
Don’t really know why it’s taking so long

Crouse will muddy any trade. His value is inflated more relative to his impact than Chychrun.

Mentioned his name before but if Chychrun is a target, forget Crouse and push for a cheaper prospect that is physical and cost controlled like Ben McCartney in Tucson. Sparkplug checking winger that projects as a long-term bottom six piece.

The issue is Muzzin is untradable next summer if he wants to be. He holds all the cards so any plan of adding a guy with term should probably factor in Muzzin's cap hit until at least 2023/2024. Without moving a big piece that will be very tricky.

then move mrazek and u have ur top 4 if he’s able to return and this concussion doesn’t become a bigger issue

crouse isn’t a huge factor so can do without him

We shouldn't be trading a first round pick for a rental. Adding a player with term is much better value. Even if Chychrun costs twice what Klingberg or Lindholm does, you get Chychrun for four times as long.

Turning down Hampus Lindholm for our 1st rounder + A level prospect should go in fireable offence category. Will have to just agree to disagree with anyone on that one because in my eyes it shouldn't be a debate. I'm not emotionally attached to a pick that would be more like a 2nd rounder if we got Lindholm. Those cup odds would be too good to turn down.

Lindholm is one of those players who shouldn't even be available right now. You don't say no to these guys, they say no to you.

The money would likely come from Kerfoot/Mrazek and one of Dermott/Holl. The extreme option is liquidating Marner into several pieces.

If Zona wants a 1st + A level prospect and Sandin/Lily for Chychrun, I'd rather make that deal. Odds of resigning Lindholm are slim.

One playoff of Lindholm doesn't give you greater cup odds than four playoffs of Chychrun though.
