Confirmed with Link: [Col/Chi/Car] Rantanen (50% by Chicago), Hall, Nils Juntorp to Car - Drury, Necas, 2nd, 4th to Avs, 3rd round pick to Chicago

one thing about The System - it depends on depth, and does it well.

of the 32 teams in the league, as of right now

17 teams have <10 players with 20 or more points
7 teams with 10 such players
4 teams with 11 (Dallas, Edmonton, Florida, Seattle)
3 teams with 12 (LA, Vegas, Washington)

and the hurricanes, with 14. the only guys under 20 that have skated regularly are chatfield and walker. (carrier and drury both had 9 points in 39 games - no one else has skated more than 17)

so, our d-first, offense stifling System has 6 less goals total than a Necas approved wide open offensive system like the Avs. the canes have played two less games. should have done this yesterday, they were 1 goal up before last night's 5-spot. (Edit post sabers game - hey, we put up a 5 spot too! who woulda thought? Back to 1 less goal with a game in hand) heck, even with decent depth scoring and mcdrai the oilers have scored two more goals than carolina, both with 58 games done. big 4 loving toronto has 2 less goals in that same 58.

i'm not judging anyone's perceptions of the canes on this board, especially after some seriously crap play. i'm just throwing numbers out there for funsies. and trying to remind myself that prior to this run of shit through flu, break, and lackluster restart they had a 6 game point streak and points in 9 of 10 games.

edit for clarity - i only counted points someone scored while on a given team. necas had over 20 as a cane. rantanen and hall have not, but both have over 20 on the year so if you want to drop necas and count them the canes have 15 20+ point scorers. but i'm not going that deep on other teams. y'all get the point.

Our "system" really doesn't have any bearing on our PP and PK. This is by far my biggest criticism of Rod which is not changing something up on the PP and to a lesser extent the PK in the playoffs. Hire an outside face to run the PP, change the PP system, whatever. But it has been incredibly bad for years now. And the PK despite being the best in the league in the regular season since Rod took over has been well below average in the playoffs. That is an issue that needs to be fixed and Rod needs to make adjustments.

But our main "system" of defense first, dump and chase, aggressive forecheck, cycling in the O zone rather than creating offense off the rush, etc. has not been an issue at all. It has worked extremely well, both in the regular season and the playoffs.

I’ve thought about why the system narrative is so prevalent. For some, the coach has to shoulder the blame. Otherwise, you have to put it on the players and that means that they just didn’t produce and therefore, might not be good enough. That is tough to stomach. Rod has thrown so much spaghetti at the wall on the PP that it’s hard to blame him for it at this point. Maybe the mix of players is just not right?

The rest, particularly outside of the fanbase, is a rejection of analytics. A segment of fans don’t like them. Carolina is analytically dominant. When they don’t win, it’s evidence that analytics (i.e. the way the Canes play) are junk.

I think I’ve listened to every radio/podcast clip on Rantanen the past couple days (besides Barstool) and they all go like this:

Host: “Insiderrrr, are you telling me Rantanen could be on the trading block after ONLY A MONTH?!?!”

Reporter (Seravelli/Kaplan/Dreger/etc): “Uh no, not really. It’s been a weird time with the 4 nations, Canes travel, and he’s only been in Raleigh for like a week total.”

Host: “Insiderrrr, what are the canes DOING?!?!”

Reporter: “Well they want to give Rantanen time to acclimate, and there’s two pieces to the negotiation: 1. Does Rantanen envision Raleigh has home for 8 years; 2. Is the $ right”

Host: “Insiderrrr, why is Dundon so CHEAP?!?!”

Reporter: “It’d be the largest contract in team history at over $100M and they have money not many teams can match right now”

Host: “Insiderrrr, do they Canes flip him before the deadline b/c they SUCK?!?”

Reporter: “Why would they? They knew he was not signed coming into the trade, the East is wide open for the playoffs, why not ride it out for a playoff run instead of trading him and not getting near the value that they lost a month ago back”

Host: “Insiderrrr what’s this LOGIC?!?”

It’s cause outside of this Rantanen noise there’s nobody else worthwhile to talk about other then Brayden Schenn and Scott Laughton and they keep going back to the fact that they traded for Guentzel but didn’t sign him and are acting like that’s the first time a team traded for a rental and he walked I don’t get it and I also don’t get the Dundon is cheap part either last time I checked they are a cap team every season. If Rantanen had 10 plus points which he could have there wouldn’t be this kinda talk

Yes, Carolina probably has the best depth in hockey. That's what happens when a team manages draft capital well, racks up the value in long-term RFA contracts, and makes top-tier value adds in UFA and trade. I know that our center group is, shall we way, controversial, but the overall depth is truly something, particularly in the bottom-6. And with Nikishin, Morrow, and potentially Nadeau and/or FUS on the way, the Canes are looking pretty great long-term no matter what happens with Rantanen, especially because Guentzel/Rantanen did not cost 1st rounders to acquire.

One win is good, and it shows that when we have control of matchups, we can still play at a very high level. The problem is that when we can't control matchups, our weaknesses get BADLY exposed and things spiral rapidly.

Especially dealing with a spiraling Edmonton. We cleaned up last year in the 1st two periods and hung on in the 3rd. Need to keep the pedal down for a full 60.
