I don't think Vancouver wants to deal Schenn for some reason, he is playing well with Hughes and I think they want him around for his development.. unless a team over pays maybe a 2nd for him... I wouldn't give more than a 3rd (he's signed cheap for next year aswell) if he's only worth a 4th I feel they'll hold on to him instead.

I LOVED Kessel! I would love to see Kessel on our team and score a patent bullet writer from the circle again, but unfortunately I don't think he fits our defensive minded Mold, he liked to Cheat a lot for rush plays. He isn't going to be playing in our Top 6, and although we would love his scoring on the third line, we need it to also be a shutdown line for matchups... Kessel is slower (which now probably makes him average speed) and his shot is still good but less lethal than it use to me... And he isn't going to be backchecking as hard as Micheyev... So there are better options out there. If we were looking for a cheap scoring threat in our top 6, he'd be a good target, but we have so much skill from our core guys that we're looking for a power forward with net presence and good defense to fit our mold.
4th line with Spezza

I'd love Schenn as a depth guy, tbh it would get me in the feels to see him come back where it all started. Still feel like we screwed up his potential

The league getting way faster in terms of speed and Schenn having awful footspeed is what ruined his potential. If you're not a very good skater, you're very limited in what you'll be able to do in the league.

That's the thing though, we had him play right after his draft year when he should've spent more time in junior and maybe even AHL working on his all around skills and skating.

Also, Schenn's skating initially in his career was actually decent. However, we had him put on a bunch of mass which made him slow, and apparently he developed tendinitis from the type of training we were putting him through. I remember Gary Roberts even criticized the Leafs strength and conditioning program for outdated training methods.

The fact that Schenn has been able to reinvent himself a little bit and actually stick around in this league is impressive. He managed to win back to back cups, and is on track to play 1000+ games. That's very impressive and doesn't happen by accident.

Schenn is a no brainer. Reminds me of how obvious the Bogosian fit was pre-trade.

Broke Vancouver's franchise records for hits in a game with 12 and the record he beat was his own. He's averaging almost 17min TOI paired beside Hughes on a lot of nights. You don't play those minutes beside a one-dimensional OFD and come out with positive results if you are a liability. Hughes gave an interview talking about why he requested to play with Schenn again - good listen.

His skating is passable for a bottom pair, even with Sandin. His play-style masks his poor foot speed because of how conservative he is in transition and rarely takes risks.

Definitely hoping it gets done for something in the ballpark of a 4th +. Safe play, good story.

Better idea

We go Randy Carlyle Ducks style
Pronger, Niedermayer & Beauchemin all playing with each other and all logging 30 per game

Weaker D all playing 8-10 min per game
Muzzin, Rielly & Brodie log 30 per

No need to do that when we have the best bottom pairing in hockey.

As much as I love Sandin & Liljegren and their contributions rookies don’t always transition well to the intensity of playoff hockey. We definitely need to acquire some insurance (even a 6-7 guy) and see how it goes

We have insurance already. Dermott is an experienced versatile quality bottom pair+ dman himself.

Rookies do play in the playoffs. They don't just get benched.

Schenn is quite slow is the issue and we're a transition team. It may not be the best fit. I would personally bring in a vet like Anton Stralman instead.

I think the idea of adding another guy on the blueline is for when there's an inevitable injury to a top-4 defenceman. I'd like someone who has at least shown that they can handle a top-4 role. Braun is a guy that comes to mind but he really doesn't have that physical edge that you'd like.

I would like Schenn maybe if he had a bit more foot speed, I don't think he'd fair well here in a higher role.

Mayfield is an attractive piece because he's signed for next year as well at under 1.5

Getting the sense we're willing to trade one of: our 1st, 2nd, Amirov, Robertson.
I don't think we'll want to trade Knies or Niemla unless the player is incredible.

We're going to need to pay to dump Ritchie before we can even pay for another player first, so we'll see how tolerant we are for high prices.

If the price is fine and toronto dont overpay, im fine with it... like something similar to what tampa paid for coleman.

Something like 1st pick+ hirvonen

Or maybe Robertson is promoted?

I would be very reluctant to trade Knies.

The 3 players that have been mentioned as potential to be traded are Amirov, Robertson and Abruzzese and all 3 players have a similar play style and are the same smallish and skilled.

Knies seems to be the outlier in terms of play style and size.

Except toronto get something big, no one of robertson amirov knies or niemela will be trade.

I dont remember the last time a A prospect was traded for a rental player...

When our 3rd pair has Sandin and
either Dermott/Liljegren on it we have some of the lowest GA/60 and SA/60 numbers in the league. For any pairing.

Sure add Schenn as a depth guy but he should not be playing over any of those guys.
