I think the thing that separates Toronto from other cup contenders at the TDL this year is, Florida, Colorado, Vegas, Carolina don't have a first round pick in the upcoming draft.

If Toronto really wants that player, they already have an advantage in that sense, upgrading the top 4 and getting deeper on the back in should be priority number one, they are one injury away from Brodie/Muzz/Moe from being thin on the back end come playoff time.

If they can't upgrade the defense the way they want too, then adding a top forward at the deadline should be the next approach they take, sliding Kerfoot down to the 3rd line would make us that much deeper up front.
Vegas already moved their 1st for their deadline addition, Eichel should be in the lineup by the end of the month.

They sure need him, being a 13th overall team ranked 13th in xgf%, even playing jn the worst division in hockey.

Kessel needs to drive his own line, and carry the puck. He wouldn't fit with John and in particular Willy. He'd have to play on the third line, like he did with Pittsburgh. He'd replace Kase. His cap is pretty high too.

And that completely destroys the idea of the Leafs 3rd line being used defensively.

I'm probably one of Kessels biggest fans on here but he'd be too much of a media distraction given his team history (I also won't be surprised if he put the Leafs on his ntc) and I don't see a fit for him either

If you said that last year wouldn't that mean you were wrong about Dermott?

Though hard not to see the writing on the wall for the guy.

Hasn't managed to solidify himself as a lock in the lineup (especially in the top 4) and will start to get more expensive contract wise.

He may not be a tdl move.but personally will be pretty surprised if he's still a Leaf by the end of the offseason

It’s just not a fit to me. I’m not a believer in needing a forward upgrade, but if we are, it would need to be a Hertl or Miller level player to make a tangible difference. I’m not sure that makes sense either.

I mean it was pretty clear that with the Muzzin re-signing and the emergence of Sandin that Dermott would need to either adapt to play the right side or was going to get pushed out. That coupled with his less than stellar play when moved out of a very sheltered role and pending contract made it a relatively safe bet

Dermott, at his price tag and age, is a tough one to move for me unless there’s a legit upgrade to push him out.

While he hasn’t stepped up in the top 4 full time yet (he showed flashes in previous years when called upon), he’s still a strong third paring/depth guy.

Thing is that he doesn’t excel in one area. He doesn’t bring much offensively, but he’s solid in his own zone, good mobility, decent in transition.

I still think he can carve out a top 4 role someday, maybe not on the Leafs, but after getting more NHL experience .. to me he seems like a D man that will progress nicely as he ages. Not top pair, but a solid #4.

Reuniting with Schenn, as I've heard rumoured, actually makes a ton of sense. He's signed for an additional year after this one, and has been playing valuable minutes in both Tampa & Vancouver. The 850k price tag makes him easy to fit into the team, and you also get him for next year. Holl isn't "mean", but having Muzzin, Schenn, and Holl gives us some good size on the backend. Holl and Muzzin haven't clicked this year. Muzzin-Schenn would offer a big nasty pairing that can play hard minutes. Or you hope Muzzin-Holl figure it out again, and it gives you a third pairing of Sandin-Schenn. Either way I think this is a great way to go. Dermott has been pushed out by Liljegren. Offer Vancouver Dermott for Schenn and call it a day

I think Schenn with Sandin would work out better, not enough speed when you combine Muzzin-Schenn.

Don't mind getting Schenn playing the 5th/6th/7th d slot, we are in trouble if we are acquiring him to play in the 4 slot. Works on Vancouver because they aren't a very good team, but any team in the east such as Tampa/Carolina/Florida etc do not have him in the top 4.

Regarding Kessel, he's more of a play maker at this point of his career. He's worth consideration to put with Nylander and JT. This isn't prime Kessel any more, he doesn't drive lines and I don't think he even cares to at this point. His elite hands works better on that line than Kerfoot. And before people attack me again let me reiterate when I replace Kerfoot on 2LW I'm not replacing him from the entire team. He's still here wherever Keefe put him next.

Not in my top 5 winger choices but he is a possible Coyote casualty needing to be saved. The points drop from Pens to Arizona makes no sense. If Kessel came here and went on a 20-25 goal pace with Tavares/Nylander I wouldn't be shocked. He can let them do the heavy lifting and just use his offensive IQ and hands to either keep the play going or get in position to finish a play.

I mean we already pay the man so why not

If we're chasing a forward go and get Stastny

If we get a center injury were not completely boned and we could build a decent attacking 3rd line around him

Bunting Matthews Marner
Kerfoot Tavares Nylander
Kase Stastny Spezza
Mikhayev Kampf Engvall

First line is solid. 3rd line also giving us great flexibility. Lots of options for 4th line.

Only adjustment I’d make is LW on 2nd line if we can find someone definitely better than Kerfoot. Not the easiest thing to do with our cap spot and Kerfoot seems to be really doing well lately.

defence is where I would focus.

Yep depending on what happens it could be the end of the road for him. It’s the same for most of the team every season.

Kessel and Mayfield would be dream additions. Kessel is like a 2nd Marner but then Tavares and Matthews each get an elite playmaker. Obviously Kessel isn't the same as he was in 2018 or at the level of Marner right now but I think he has some gas left in the tank to be pretty good. Mayfield adds much needed size on a beautiful contract.
