Unfortunately when mathews and marner got their money, given by dubas, good players as they developed would be going elsewhere to get their payday. Look at the cup winners in the last 3, 5, 10, 50 years, no team pays their so called best players so disproportionately. Fun making the playoffs. Fun watching fancy passes & goals through the season but not fun watching, even in wins, getting out hit & pounded game after game. Out in the 1st round again. Everything I've said is fact, not fake news!

Well I’m pretty sure that’s how Pittsburgh won their cup with crosby, malkin, Staal, letang and fleury eating most of their cap.

Also, the leafs weren’t pushed around and outhit in the series versus Washington, Boston x 2, and pretty sure from what i remember against Montreal. They just couldn’t score against Price.

Whichever of these free agent defenceman we can get for Dermott+2nd, that's who we should go for.

Giordano to me makes a lot of sense for that package. Maybe even throw in an AHL player like Seney or something. Toronto born, noted chemistry with Brodie and a well respected veteran. He's not the same player he was 2-3 years ago but he's still effective.

I also feel like Lindholm fits the bill the more I look at the defensemen out there if Muzzin is out for the season. The only problem is that he hasn't been that good over the last few years so the price would have to make sense and reflect that. His minutes have been reduced over the last 3 years and his impact has not really been impressive. Maybe playing behind Rielly and Brodie would be a good move for him? Maybe a change of scenery? Also this is weird:

Worth a shot to see if Domi can add a spark up front, if not, no big deal. We have lots of potential guys who would replace what Engvall is bringing to our team for next year

Ewwwww. Engvall drives whichever bottom 6 line he’s on and makes them a positive, and a top pk guy on a very elite unit. All while not having flashy enough counting stats to really demand much more than his QO.
Max domi seems like he wears out his welcome everywhere he goes and has more of his dads poor qualities than good ones as far as building a hockey team. Hard pass.

Soucy woudn't be bad either, funny that Seattle could help us make our defense pretty much elite if the price is right.

Anyone know if Khudobin is available?

I would be inclined to maybe specifically try our luck on Soucy. I’d love Gio but his contract would really limit what other moves we could reasonably make and I think we have more than 1 need
 
I know everybody hates rentals but if/when the Jets sell, what about Stastny? It looks like he won't cost a 1st or a top prospect and with 15g in 44 games you wouldn't be hoping he'd turn his game around like with Foligno.

A true middle 6c that pushes kampf Engvall down to the 4th. Could put him with Willy and stretch out the skill a bit more instead of forcing a JT Willy duo that isn’t working

I’m fine with UFAs only under two conditions:

1) price paid is reflective of how short their stay here may end up
2) goaltending is shored up. Either by Campbell rebounding pre deadline or Mrazek flipped for another goalie who has had a better season, provides a legitimate safety net

the idea of spending assets for one run just to have our goalies face plant the series is a non-starter for me.

You’d have to trade away in the off-season and replace Kerfoot and whichever of dermott or holl doesn’t go the other way with ELC/sub 1m bargain bin finds and would definitely have to let Mikheyev walk.
If you pay the price to have Vancouver retain on miller for the extra year like the devils did with Coleman you have less of a squeeze.
Off season cap juggling is always made out to be a bigger impediment than it actually end up being. Schenn having the extra year at 850k helps a lot as he’s nearly half the price of dermott and just over a third the cost of Holl.

the problem I see is unless Vancouver is retaining 50%, and I don’t know why they would without a gross overpayment on our part, we are getting rid of 2-3 players to fit Millers full cap. We’re already going to be spread incredibly thin to fill out this roster next year. We are further stripping away money from other positions we already don’t pay much for.

Not saying it’s not doable, and not saying it’s not worth trying, but I mean it’s definitely as complicated as it appears

yeah this idea out there that the Leafs have been bullied into their playoff loses really isn’t reality

Not sure that it matters much. Whoever is left will be a scratch in the playoffs anyway.

Yeah, I like Soucy as well. A lot of pieces I wouldn’t mind grabbing from Seattle.

a really strong partner for us I think.

Just quickly without building out a roster on cap friendly miller 5.25 + Schenn .85 = 6.1m
Dermott 1.5 + holl 2.0 + Kerfoot 3.5 = 7m
So you can replace that spare D with a 900k player and come out neutral cap wise.
Obviously there are other considerations to be made roster wise (you have to solve the issue in next with 5.45m in cap to invest without poaching from other areas in the line up) which admittedly could be a task in of itself. They’re probably going replace Mikheyev with an ELC and use that savings to bolster other areas. By shuffling out the guys who are considered luxuries or excess cap wise it could be turned into a quality player
