GDT: Trade and Free Agency Thread - 2021/22 PART IX

I'm stuck between the panic of the losses against Montreal and Buffalo and the poor goaltending the last couple of months versus the way I've seen the team play this year, and how good they can be. Trades I think I'd make:

To Arizona: Kase and Abramov/Steeves
To Toronto: Crouse
Kase and Crouse are both RFA, Crouse a little more expensive to sign, but brings the physicality I desire. Abramov has upside and fits the time frame and cost for Zona.

To Seattle: Dermott and '23 2nd
To Toronto: Soucy
Soucy offers some insurance should Muzz be less than 100%, Dermott is younger and may have upside with another organization and the 2nd continues the build that Seattle must develop.

Bunting Matthews Marner
Crouse/Robertson Tavares Nylander
Mikheyev Kampf Engvall
Robertson/Crouse Kerfoot Spezza/Simmonds
Clifford Anderson

Rielly Brodie
Muzz/Soucy Holl
Sandin/Muzz/Soucy Liljegren/Boosh

This year's 1st and 2nd, next year's 1st and our top 4 prospects are still available if something else is required (goaltending?).

I actually wouldn’t mind Chiarot.

Hesitant to give up a 1st, but it would probably cost a 1st + Dermott. Ideally a 2nd + prospects would be better obviously.

He can play both sides, so Holl would probably be gone if acquired in a separate deal.

Rielly-Brodie
Sandin-Chiarot
Muzzin-Lyub
/Liljegren

Gives us some reassurance in case Muzzin doesn’t come back too, can run a bottom 4 of Sandin-Lyub, Chiarot-Liljegren

You know what, the money given to the leafs top 4 or 5 players in the cap nhl never has worked & never will. Oilers will never win the cup with McDavid salary. Unfortunately when mathews and marner got their money, given by dubas, good players as they developed would be going elsewhere to get their payday. Look at the cup winners in the last 3, 5, 10, 50 years, no team pays their so called best players so disproportionately. Fun making the playoffs. Fun watching fancy passes & goals through the season but not fun watching, even in wins, getting out hit & pounded game after game. Out in the 1st round again. Everything I've said is fact, not fake news!

Engvall for Domi swap? Engvall is RFA, Domi is UFA. I’d add a pick/prospect for some retention.

Worth a shot to see if Domi can add a spark up front, if not, no big deal. We have lots of potential guys who would replace what Engvall is bringing to our team for next year

Something tells me that there is something with Domi that turns teams off and it's more than his personality, maybe lifestyle? However if not... than I would definitely take a flyer on him. He could be our Gallagher type spark plug. We need some fire in our lineup, maybe playing in front of the fans that made his dad a fan favorite will energize him daily.

Seems like a waste having 2 of Liljegren, Holl and Dermott sitting on the bench doing nothing on a team that hasn't exactly lit the world on fire offensively during the playoffs

I think it's time to lean into what we are and try getting our top 6 going and win that way

At.the moment i think it's an incredibly high probability we see a D man moved out at the tdl.

Almost wonder if managements plan is to use them to recoup the pick they lose in a second trade.

COVID screwed Dubas' plans for the cap continuing to rise and riding that wave of thought. Now by the time the cap goes up again it'll be time to give them new deals and these greedy mercenaries will want to reset the market all over again

I'm not opposed to a Domi add, but there's this myth about his game that he is an energetic spark plug. He's mostly a non-physical, floating playmaker with the occasional hot headed outburst. He has 12 hits this year. Twelve. Engvall has 37...

A potential London line of Domi-Tavares-Marner would be fun on paper, even if he and Marner didn't mesh in junior.

TRAIKOS: Five directions that Leafs GM Kyle Dubas can take heading into the trade deadline | Toronto Sun

With less than three weeks remaining until the deadline, here is a look at the available options:

A TOP-FOUR D-MAN

The Leafs need a top-four defenceman. Lucky for them, the market is flooded with options, whether it’s power-play specialists (John Klingberg and Jakob Chychrun), penalty-killers (Ben Chiarot and Josh Manson) or minute-munchers (Hampus Lindholm and Jeff Petry).

But the guy who checks all boxes and should be at the top of Toronto’s wish list is Seattle’s Mark Giordano.

For one, he’s a Toronto native, who spent his career in the hockey hotbed of Calgary, where he was a teammate and frequent linemate of Brodie’s.

He’s also a captain, whose leadership would be immeasurable for a team that is under the gun.

A 1B GOALKEEPER

Forget about Marc-Andre Fleury.

The Maple Leafs don’t need a No. 1 goalie. They already have one. He’s just going through a lull right now. And if Jack Campbell doesn’t snap out of it — or if his confidence slips again during the playoffs — the Leafs are going to need a 1B they can turn to. Someone who can step up and to do a better job than Petr Mrazek has been lately.

Someone such as Braden Holtby.

The 32-year-old had a rocky season sharing the net with Thatcher Demko in Vancouver last year, but he’s 9-10-1 with a 2.78 GAA and .912 save percentage in Dallas this year. Holtby also won a Stanley Cup in 2018, getting Washington over a similar hump that Toronto is trying to get over.

Best yet, he’s making only $2-million this year.

Again, you don’t need him to be the No. 1. You just need him to be a safety net — if not a sounding board — for Campbell and his insecurities.

It’s something Holtby has experience with, having played the mentor role for Demko last year.

A TOP-SIX FORWARD

While Dubas said it’s unlikely the team picks up another forward at the deadline, you can never score too many goals — especially in the playoffs, when teams are matching lines and offence is hard to come by.

It’s for this reason why a second-line winger makes sense.

Toronto needs someone who can provide a spark for John Tavares, who has gone 14 games without a goal, or someone who can make the third line more of a threat.

Vancouver’s J.T. Miller is at the top of every team’s wish list. But a more realistic option might be Chicago’s Brandon Hagel, who is on pace for close to 30 goals this season and has another two years remaining on a contract that carries a discount-friendly $1.5-million cap hit.

Think of him as another Michael Bunting.

Whether it’s Miller or Hagel or New Jersey’s Pavel Zacha, offensive depth shouldn’t be overlooked. After all, if last year’s playoffs were any indication, in which Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner combined for just one goal, the Leafs are going to need all the goal-scorers they can find.

MORE TRUE GRIT

Are the Leafs tough enough?

Toronto has Wayne Simmonds for protection. But with a post-concussed Muzzin, what they really need is someone who can push back, while also playing meaningful minutes.

The first name that comes to mind is Columbus’ Max Domi, whose father spent more than a decade in Toronto.

The younger Domi might not be as feared as his dad, but his game is still equal parts skill and sandpaper — the kind of thing that Nazem Kadri used to bring to the lineup.

STANDING PAT

Whether Dubas acquires a top-four defenceman, a top-six forward or another goalie, the team’s playoff hopes will ultimately hinge on the play of the highly paid stars.

The core — in particular, the $40-million Four — need to be the team’s best players. They certainly need to be better than they have been in previous playoffs. That means producing offensively.

But it also means stepping out of their comfort zone and doing the things that don’t come naturally to them, whether that’s taking the body or blocking or shot or even getting into a fight.

They are being paid to be leaders. Well, now is the time to lead.

Because if Matthews, Marner, Tavares and William Nylander do not show up and get the job done, it won’t matter who is in net or on defence or taking up a spot on the third line.

Easy pass. There has to be better fits available.

Dubas said the same thing i said about goaltending. Its not really goaltending issues but defesnive issues.

Every game campbell allowed at least 4 goal.

Pit : team was just awful.
Lak ; defensive play awful
Cbs : team stop playing with 4 goal lead
Tb : defensive awful
Colorado : toronto was trash
Stl : d awful
NyR d awful
Nj both was not good enough
Calgary both was not good enough
Stl : d just awful
Cbs : team great but campbell awful
Det : team greT but campbell awful.

The 2 only game of the season than leafs played really well but not campbell was the last 2 game... so yes im pretty agree on the fact youre upgrading your d and you get a huge chance to upgrade goaltending at the same time.

He's just taking away pressure from his goaltenders and placing the blame on the team as a whole like most level headed GM would do. They haven't been good at all recently.

I'm not sure what D trade would make the group we have so much better that a goaltender would go from a .890 to a .915 save percentage last few games, heck last few weeks. The defensemen available aren't exactly better than what we have overall.

I dunno man, I'm in the game day thread for every game and almost nobody sitting there watching the game thinks Campbell looks good on these goals. That's a weird way to analyze it but it's still a lot of eyes on the game. You're correct defence was an issue too (some in the moment melt downs) but Campbell himself was just as bad. There's no way we imagined what we're seeing. It's everything. Mentally, physically, technically, the guy is just not good right now.

Leafs underlying analytics are elite if you still don't trust all those eyes, and don't support it was a defensive issue alone. Our xGA has remained one of the best even throughout the play that has people concerned.

Leafs need a damn save.

Yep. I play hockey with a few guys that grew up playing with him. Apparently he was always the least-liked player in any dressing room he played in, and had the same tendencies back then too. He'd lollygag around the ice and wouldn't try for most of the game, then for example when his team went up 5-1 or 6-1 and there was 4 minutes left in the game, he'd go out and suddenly try and throw a huge hit or crush someone for no reason at all. Couldn't get him to commit to that effort in close games or at times when the team really needed it. Apparently. Also I played against him once and he seemed like a complete idiot

Definitely passing on Domi in our dressing room.

Ideally Sandin Liljegren is your 3rd pair playing sheltered minutes, top load your top 4 and double shift almost where your top 4 are playing 24-25 minutes and your 3rd pair playing 10-12, I'm still very much on the Mayfueld train.

Let’s go for Crouse and Chychrun, especially Crouse. He would fit our team like a glove.

Crouse

Lak 4 of4 goal was a guy alone in the slot, the half is a player not really alone but with the d doing absolutly nothing to stop him so look like the same thing.

Pittsburgh was more an unlucky game
3 deflected shot who change drasticly of direction.
1 of 5 was a player alone in the slot

Cbs 3 of 4 goal alone
Tb 3 of 4 alone
Col 3 of 5
Stl 5 of 5
NYR 4 of 5
Nj 2 of 3
cgy 3 of 5
Stl 3 of 5
31 of 45 69% of goal he allowed on those game was a guy aline in the slot...
Just by reducing the number of time leafs let a guy all alone in the slot, that should help A LOT goaltending.

Xga work with number of scoring chance, its really not perfect,. I give you an exemple...you give 10 breakaway statisticilly its the same than 10 backhand weak shot with a guy on your back from the same spot.

In his zone toronto are pretty good, but off the rush they are awful.

We thought Kadri was a bone head in the playoffs. Just wait and see the Domi gene kick in . With the spotlight firmly on him, he'll feel compelled to do something completely stupid and selfish.

I never want to see another Domi on the back of a Leaf jersey again.

Amen to that brother.
Pretty confident the Leafs would have zero interest
