They likely won't hold onto the wild card spot as Dallas plays more games but how about:

Ritchie
Mikheyev
Mrazek
Amirov
1st

Hertl @ 50%
Reimer @ 50%

-Would leave us $3M under the cap to make other additions as well. Amirov and a 1st is steep but for the cap space and retention I think it's worth it.

You want to send a 1st and Amirov, for a rental and backup goalie?

Cap space, and a good two way forward in the middle of his prime that has played at a 71 point pace for the last 4 seasons. This isn't a Folingo situation.

The backup goalie is irrelevant but should we need him Reimer has a career .925 SV% in the playoffs.

Yes if he injured and miss the rest of the season and still play injured in playoff, its the same thing than foligno because hes a rental.

Thats why rental player rarely giving much more than a 1st and a 3rd pick and most of the time it will be for a dmen because every team on playoff want to upgrade their d group

I love the idea of obtaining Reimer as our backup... but in no way am I for giving up Amirov and a 1st, unless it's a player with term.

How many near PPG players that are also good defensively are available at the deadline?

I'm all for adding a player with term but finding one that fits our cap situation and provides that value would be extremely difficult. Nobody is retaining on a great player that produces. Teams will always take on those players at full value.

I'm fine with giving up the premium price on the right player to try and win, and again it would open up space to add another good piece.

All players have injury risk. You can't be afraid to make a big move because Foligno didn't work out.

Just no... way too much to give up. Hard pass.

Depend who are in or out at trade deadline

Interesting player who could be available at trade deadline

Giroux
hertl
Pavelski
radulov
Klingberg
rakell
Lindholm
Manson
Gaudreau
Fleury
Giordano
Chiarot
Brown
Ristolainen
Colin miller
Jt miller
Chychrun

There a lot of pretty good option at trade deadline this season, so no i will never give amirov and a 1st pick when you can have an other pretty good option half of this price.

No way the leafs do it mid year but I think the performance with Mitch out of the lineup this year will heavily support moving him in the off-season for a top 6 wing and top 4 d and or cap space to trickle through the roster more.

The "hockey trade" for me was Marner for Eichel +. Of course that came with extreme risk given Eichel's dilemma, in hindsight Leafs would've been fine without Marner until Eichel's return. I can't really fault the board for not making that move though.

Next one I would explore is Matthew Tkachuk/Andersson. However, Leafs might have to sweeten that a bit. Unless Marner goes on a Kucherov like post season tear, I don't see how Marner sticks around next season.

I think if Marner plays well. Not amazing but plays even just good and team wins a playoff series, I don't think the core is split up nor do I think it should be.

They'd have to go deep or win it all of course. There would have to be very significant progress to justify keeping the band together imo. We won't have the cap space in the foreseeable future to address other areas with this model. The elephant in the room is Marner's 11m, great player but not worth the cap hit. We shall see.

The reality its the leafs will win or die with this core

Matthews is the key player

They cant trade nylander' probably most consistant player right now

Tavares will never go anywhere else of toronto

If leafs trade marner, maybe they will loose matthews in 2 season and half...

So the reality is no body from the core 4 will move in the next 2,5 season

If they play poorly and are knocked out in round 1, one of the core will go if they no longer believe they can win with this core. If they won't move Marner for fear of losing Matty, then it will be Nylander unless they can convince JT to waive his NMC. AT the end of the day, the 3 amigos chose not to leave enough money on the table to pay for a stronger supporting cast. If they can't get it done, then it is on them when one has to be dealt. Business is business.

Or they will do exactly what washington did, wait and hope key player finally learn how to play in playoff to reach the next level.

I'd rather Dubas go after Pavelski+Holtby. Would cost less and provides something different.

No it's not the reality at all. Dubas may not even be our GM this time next year, so I'm not sure why you're so certain the 4 aren't going anywhere for 2.5 years.

I don't see any scenario where trading Nylander fetches us a better return AND saves us cap space. Marner is the guy. Auston and Mitch are buddies of course but Matthews isn't blind, he's producing now without Marner and has done so for the majority of his career. If he has to go, so be it.

1- In none situation without matthews, leafs will be a better team

2- JT sign to his hometown with a NMC to stay in his home town.

3-if we count the 1st game against mtl to now, he was the best foward and of top 4 cheapest player of 4

4- like i say at #1, the leafs will never be better without matthews and his best friend in this team is marner. So if you trade away his best friend, maybe you will frustrate matthewa and you raise significantly the chance to loose him. So what is the best thing to do, take a chance to loose him or do everything you can to keep it the next 10 seasons?

If you believe Matthews is going to base his career/life decisions around playing hockey with Mitch Marner than I don't know what to tell you. We're not talking about splitting up the Sedin twins here ffs.

I think Matthews is a gamer and wants to win. He can have great friendships like Freddy leave the Leafs but knowing Jack Campbell makes Toronto better, I don't think that upsets him. You make new friendships and continue the quest for a championship. If Mitch goes and we get cap relief and roster upgrades, it's a no brainer. Question is, what is the right fit here. We also can't sell low on Marner. So it's in our best interests he comes back and is built up and firing on all cylinders.

Absolutely. We need Marner to start popping off and pump up those offensive numbers. There are only a handful of trade partners that would meet our criteria, have to be extremely careful with any Marner deal.

good point on freddie ... it was freddie at auston's place last summer, not mitchy
also, i think it was 2 summers ago, maybe 3, when it was auston and willie in alquonquin park fishing, not mitchy ...

Its not only about base your career/ life about playing with marner.

Just for fun...If toronto trade marner and still loose in 1st round, what do you think will happen?

Matthews was producing really well when Marner was injured. Marner came back for a couple games and Matthews’ production slowed down. Now Marner is out of the lineup again and Matthews is producing again.

I’ve mentioned it before but there’s other superstars who tend to play better with lesser players. Players that go into the dirty areas and retrieve pucks, players who are hard on the puck wherever it is, players who go to the net, etc. Take a look at Crosby for example, when they first acquired Kessel you’d think those two would have been an instant fit with one another considering you have the best playmaker in Crosby and a sniper in Kessel… That wasn’t the case though.

I don't know what the value looks like, but Mrazek for a 50% Reimer would be absolutely huge for the cap next season. One of the few ways to have a backup that cheap, especially with any confidence.
