Well there's a balance. If it's one thing that's encouraging is that Dubas is finding some upside outside of the first round.

In the two drafts he dealt a 1st, he was able to get Robertson and Knies with his second .. both are near blue chippers now with good upside.

Heck even look at 2020 where he traded back and landed both Hirvonen and Niemela with those two picks. And then you have Durzi who has had a nice start to his NHL career for the Kings.

Then there's a nice list of late rounders who have shown some promise.

So, while I would prefer to not deal too many futures, I do have faith in Dubas that he can make the very best of his available picks when he does draft. Still.. Fewer picks means lesser odds of hitting on one.

the asking price wouldn’t be 3 1st. It’s probably a lot of speculation. Probably a 1st, prospect and roster player: which is a reasonable ask for Chychrun
Ya thats fair, I guess it depends on the prospect and the roster player but I've seen lots of offers/asks on the order of magnitude of 1st+Amirov+Sandin

i highly doubt it would be Amirov and sandin. Plus I don’t see the Leafs moving Sandin, I think Dermott or Liljegren would be moved before him. But Chychrun is a high usage defenseman, on a great term. He’s as good as some of the other defenseman that are signed for 8/9 million and comes at less than half the price. Doesn’t get any better than that, plus he’s a Toronto area kid! I’d love to get him, but I’m not sure Dubas would ever pull the trigger

I said this earlier in the thread, but you have to trust your scouts to find players. It’s very simple, Tampa does this extremely well. They have drafted so well that they are comfortable trading for key pieces and letting key pieces go because they have so many prospects waiting in the AHL/Junior who can step in

Sandin isnt just a "1st". He's an excellent 21yr old dmen and one of the best players in his draft class.

Sandin is a very good player and IMO is the 4th best defenseman from his draft.

Is it as simple as replacing Holl and hoping for the best from the depth or should the Leafs be paying up for Chychrun. I think they should be adding Chychryn and they are probably 1 of 5 teams where it actually makes sense.

I don't want to trade him, but I wonder how much Arizona guy Matthews Knies' stock goes up after the WJC's?

He's a 6'3 power forward type with hands and skating ability

If we trade him and he actually develops into that people are going to want heads to roll

That's something this fan base has wanted for at least a decade

I think he could be our version of Drake Batherson.

I don't think they play very similarly.

Same size, big frame players, momentum skaters, credited with two way versatility, sniping shot arsenal. Batherson has a great sense around the bet with garbage goals and nice little plays at the NHL level. Not sure about Knies in this regard or what his playmaking capabilities are.

I heard somebody describe his style as similar to Shane Doan

The chances of him becoming that are bloody slim but if he did and he was traded as a prospect the fan base would be pissed

I believe it was in a later 31 Thoughts episode where he cleared it up.
Idk, only other time I could find him mentioning Weegar and the Leafs from a quick google search is on 31 thoughts Oct 13 2020 when he says he thinks the Panthers wanted Johnsson and dermott for weegar and the Leafs said no. So the episode from feb 2021 is the second time he mentioned the Leafs turning it down.

Gotta give Dubas props, he tried to acquire Weegar and Rodrigues. Both would have been big players for us right about now.

He did acquire Rodriguez in the Kapanen trade. He just failed to resign him and now Rodrigues and Kappy are flanking Sid on the Pens top line and playing well.

Yes I know he acquired him but couldn’t agree to a contract and we lost him.

Kapanen has 16 points. 1 more than Kase and 3 less than Bunting.

Rodrigues has looked good this year.

Kase and Bunting have outplayed their contracts and have been fantastic.

I'd say Kappy on pace for 40+ points is playing well. Both Kappy and Rodrigues have looked good in the Pens games I have seen. Rodrigues has been robbed a couple of times or he'd have a few more goals.

Rodrigues has looked really good. Definitely a surprise this season. Playing with a TON of confidence can do wonders for a player.

Would love if Mikheyev could find some of that confidence.
