It's one of the best dcorps in the league, yes.

It's a good regular season d core. It's not going to win you a championship. they aren't tough enough and they aren't physical enough. & before you go one a rant about size I'm not talking about size. I'm talking about heart and soul. You can be 5'11/6'0 and be physical we don't need a 6'4/6'5 monster. Our guys simply are not that physical. They don't even clear the net which is the most pathetic thing and that's a habit that needs to start in the regular season. All they really need is one guy who is willing to step up and do that and others will follow. They are very talented no doubt but they do not have that grittiness that is needed to win right now that is and what has always held them back. There are defenseman out there that do it and we need one or two to solidify this group.

Just look at Montreal's defense from last year. Them are Carey Price carried them through the playoffs. That defense was hacking, wacking, shoving, dumping guys in front of Price. He was able to see everything clearly. Who does that on our team? No one right now and it's the key ingredient that we really need. Maybe it's not a defenseman we get but just the team buying in.

Yeah and Jack Campbell has a .937 save percentage. I don't know what to tell you if you think that's sustainable.

Cool! They also have the third best team save percentage in the league.

The point is that defence is the thinnest position on the roster. The Leafs are in a very tough spot if one of Rielly, Muzzin, or Brodie go down, as they don't really have any other guys at that position who can play top 4 minutes against tough competition. We've seen this the last two playoffs when Muzzin went down.

actually they're not in a tough spot at all - they have some of the best defensive depth in hockey. Two spectacular kids with top pair upside and two more borderline top-4 dmen to boot.

also, do you know how few teams have 3 proven tough usage top-pair quality dmen likje the Leafs have with Rielly, Muzzin, and Brodie?

Hate to be pedantic, but we didn't actually make the playoffs 2 years ago. Also with the small sample size nature of this, you do have to take the opponent into consideration, and neither Habs nor CBJ were high-scoring teams. Not to mention that they adapted an extra defensive style to counter our firepower.

You can attach all the advanced stats you want Zeke. How were MTL’s advanced stats? They still made it to the finals. Advanced stats are only one part of it. The other part is what players and analysts who have actually participated in the Stanley Cup finals have said is important and contributed to their win. That is grit, that is intensity, that is a commitment to playing as tight as possible every night and winning battles. Advanced stats are important in building a team but as we know they actually mean f*** all when it comes to winning a championship. Anyone who’s won a Stanley cup will tell you that straight up.

EDIT: also you keep pointing to our defensive numbers yet we haven’t won shit. So the numbers mean absolutely nothing to me lol. Also with context, we know that scoring goes down in the playoffs. So naturally our GA would go down.

Our defense has been great in the playoffs, by normal stats or advanced stats. I don't know what to tell you.

Zeke when are you going to realize that advanced stats mean nothing if it doesn’t translate to wins? It’s def one part of the puzzle. Im not denying that. But another part is actually being able to do things on the ice that advance stats doesn’t show. That is why despite us having good advanced stats we do not win. It’s the little battles we lose in front of the net, it’s not giving our goalies clean looks at in coming shots. It’s not forechecking hard, it’s losing puck battles on the boards and turning over the puck. Those things don’t show up on your fancy stats.

all fair.

so here's how every team did defensviely against the Habs the last 2 playoffs:

again, I showed you goals against.

those aren't fancy stats.

and what about goals against? We still lost

*scoring is lower in the playoffs, so with context it doesn’t really provide a whole lot of insight into the defensive play we saw with our own two eyes

Muzzin is the current 2nd pairing LHD behind Rielly, Sandin is the 3rd pairing LHD, who should replace Muzzin on pairing #2 when Muzzin moves on and he looks primed to do it. I don't think there is a short term or long term concern for the 2nd pairing on the left side and having both Muzzin and Sandin provides depth right now.

I think getting Chychrun means they lose Sandin in trade to Arizona and Muzzin in trade to make financial room for Chychrun. They would also be hard pressed to get good assets back with them needing to shed that contract after bringing in Chychrun. They would also need to add significantly to Sandin and would lose other prime trade chips, that could be used on an area of weakness, not an area of strength.

Aren't the Yotes a budget team rebuilding and thinking about the future? I don't see players like Holl, Ritchie & Dermott (or players of that ilk) being attractive to a budget team that's rebuilding. Makes sense for the Leafs as they unload salary, but not so much for the them.
They are essentially getting the same salary in three players as they are paying for Chychryn I think this is absolutely something they would want

Your right short term but Rielly and Chychrun would be a solid foundation for the next 8 years.

Holl, Ritchie & Dermott for Chychrun is about as likely to happen as me winning the lottery. Actually I like my odds better.

I imagine they would want good players though.
Dermott is useful, why would they want Holl or Ritchie?
