I was listening to Mirtle and Siegel's podcast and they pretty much said that the Leafs offered him a contract early on but he wanted to test the market and the Leafs moved on.

They could be wrong of course but that's what they said.

Matthews seems to be building some nice chemistry with Bunting (and/or he's just reaching that level finally where it doesn't matter who is in his line,) so I'm fine with how things shook out. What a ridiculous decision though. He would like be playing with either Matthews-Marner or Tavares-Nylander.

What was the rumor there? I thought the Leafs didn't offer him a contract. If he turned one down that just silly considering he found more success here than anywhere else since Montreal.

Mirtle has hinted there wasn't as much interest from the Leafs in signing him as some think. Apparently from the players side they also wanted to be closer to family in Arizona too..so of it was a league minimum deal from both sides he'd opt to stay closer to home

Not making good decisions on or off the ice.

Apparently Chychrun might be available, per Friedman.

The Coyotes could push to have 4x1st rounders and 7x2nd rounders by the time the draft rolls around... maybe even more depending on what happens. That's how you rebuild through a draft.

I wouldn't go after Chychrun. Too expensive in assets for what he can provide and the Leafs are loaded with LHD. I'm sure plenty of teams looking to add a top 4 defenseman will be more than willing to give up the high end ask they will want.

On the flip side... maybe they'll want some minor cap dumps to fill some holes. We have some options for them. :naughty:

Too much of a luxury for sure. Though he's sort of more on the potential side than the fully realized superstar defenseman too.

I dunno a big, physical top pairing d-man that put up 41 points in 56 games last year.. slow start offensive this year but the team is awful. Signed for 3 more years at a great AAV and is only 23...

That will be worth a lot.

The Leafs won't be a player for him because they have some depth defensively and on the left side. Doesn't seem plausible to move Muzzin.

That being said if you want to be crazy:

Rielly-Brodie
Chychrun-Liljegren
Muzzin-Sandin/Dermott

Holl would have to be moved. Which would mean that you need to clear up $2.6-$2.7 of additional space in the form of: Ritchie, Mikheyev, Dermott, Engvall, or Clifford in-season. And likely Kerfoot/Mrazek in the off-season to help restock some depth.

And in terms of assets Arizona probably asks for a good young roster player in Sandin/Liljegren. Then there's the A prospects in Robertson, Amirov, Knies, Niemela .. Plus they have their 1sts/2nds to use as well. So some combination of 3 of those probably would do it plus your salary being move with them. The Leafs wouldn't be sending any deadweight contracts back so that could ease the price a bit.

Chychrun is injured. Was out against Philly. And will miss at least 2 more games (including tonight against the Rangers) but probably more.

Go and have a look at what the Arizona fans think he's worth on the main board

Jesus
Franchise hanging by a thread + Team needs help = Overvalue your one star player

Chychrun is a stud with potential on a great deal but yea some takes on his supposed value just scream "please don't trade him, he's all we have"

To be fair, he's an extremely skilled dman. Personally, I prefer him to Rielly ebbed but I love Chychrun

If u want to compete with the lightening this is the kinda deal I try to make

not just his skill set but young and great contract for a few years

I’d do it cause when his contract is up if extension is impossible then you get similar assets back at deadline

I’d give up a ton of futures + Holl/Muzzin for Chychrun easily.
He’s exactly what we need on the backend.

If Chychrun was a RD, you do it.

As a LD and having just committed to Rielly...with upcoming Sandin and current Muzzin at LD...we're stacked there.

Focus should remain upgrading on Holl.

No, he isn't exactly what we need. As @WTFMAN99 has just said, we've committed to Mo, have Muzzin, Sandin, Dermott at LD... LD isn't a position of weakness, with a glaring hole.

If Chychrun was a RD.... sure.

Chychrun, would probably mean Sandin going the other way. Probably would mean Muzzin being moved somewhere as well if he was willing to waive to accommodate spaot and cap. Lots of assets. Can't see the Leafs doing this because it would disrupt the chemistry that's clicking quite well. Too many parts.

Personally I would do it and run
Rielly Brodie
Chychrun Liljegren
Dermott Lyubushkin

Chychrun has 4 years left. Brodie has 3. I think they could easily have a D core of Rielly, Chychrun, Liljegren and even Dermott for the entirety of Rielly's contract. Fill in the missing pieces as they see is needed.

People make WAY to big a deal of RD VS LD does the player make you better? If the answer is yes and in this case it is that should be the only thing that matters

Chychryn or Mayfield would be Ideal, LH and RH is overblown.

Reilly Brodie
Chychryn Liljegren
Sandin Muzzin

Then move Muzzin if any suitors

Though it's also an issue of need.

The teams current LHD depth with Rielly-MuzziN-Sandin isn't exactly looking like an area the team needs to spend for an upgrade.

Muzzin has a full NTC this year and next. He isn't going anywhere and the leafs can't afford his nearly 6 million on the third pairing
