That's fine but we've proven we can develop kids games and help them become excellent young defenseman

It wasn't that long ago Liljegren looked pretty rough but we helped him overcome his problems and now he looks like he could be anything

Dobson has tools, I'd love for our staff to get a hold of that kid

Where does he play?

I'm not too concerned about the offense. Would it help to add a little bit more scoring in the top 9, absolutely, but don't think it's do or die if we don't.

What I do believe we need to address asap is a top 4 defenseman. Sandin-Liljegren have grown into a solid all around bottom pairing. We desperately need to upgrade on Holl. It's become pretty evident he no longer has what it takes to play in the top 4, and he's not bumping Liljegren out of his position.

One player who I would love for us to go after is Damon Severson. Similar to the Muzzin deal, he has one year remaining after this year, is a solid top 4 all around defenseman who can skate and is pretty good offensively. With New Jersey having Hamilton locked up long term, I'd see if they would be interested in a package like,

To Toronto-
Severson

To New Jersey-
Holl
Engvall
1st Round Pick

Where does he play?

At the moment we are looking to move either Dermott or Holl (apparently)

So you bring him in as your #7D, work on his game and as he improves gradually promote him

Weve also looked after both our young fellas as they graduated, with easy QOC and zone starts, so some of that to

Retain the player? lol

Putting aside his off-ice issues, the power forward mould is extremely rare nowadays.

I don't know if it's possible but with his financial issues, the leafs could just warn him that the team will suspend him at length for any infraction.

Friedman wrote in 32 thoughts that SJ would retain on an Evander Kane trade.

Is that just the reality of the situation if they want to be able to move him? Or, are they willing to do so because they are expecting a return out of it?

Evander Kane makes 7 million for each of the next three years. SJ would need to retain half and it would still need to be a soft deal (no premium assets going back to SJ).

Kane is a psycho but Kane on Matthews wing for 3.5 mill isn't the worst thing I've ever heard. Even with all of his troubles, he still put up great numbers on a shit team last year.

Evander Kane at 50% retention for Nick Ritchie + Holl.

I would think that they just want the situation resolved, so if retaining salary helps expedite the trade, then I'm sure they would do it.

Honestly, there can't be many teams willing to take him on.

Agreed. I imagine this to be a tough sell even beyond the 7M per for the 3+ years remaining on his deal. I also assume that retaining is the better option for SJ compared to a buyout.

If Evander Kane is available for 50% retention, then you better go out and get him. He's a top 5-10 power forward who is extremely skilled as well and would fit absolutely perfect on Matthews wing. Does he have some baggage, absolutely, but at the same time, it's a 3 year gamble you're taking he doesn't mess up. Let's not forget, there are plenty of players who have gone through serious off ice issues that have matured and eventually it's forgotten. Let's hope that could be the case with Kane.

Kane has never left any of the many teams he has played upon, on good terms. Wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole; dont't think the Leafs give it a seconds thought.

If it's at 50% retained with minimal assets going to SJ (assuming they just really want to dump him), I'd probably do it.

Even with him being a mess. If we could somehow send Ritchie over there with a small (SMALL) sweetener, Kane is still a very good power forward.

Any of the many teams? San Jose is his third team. Let's not act like Kane is some monster or something. Yes,he has some off ice issues, anything that was related to hockey has been dismissed, as for his personal life and what's going on between him and his ex, well frankly that's no one's business. What I care about is how perfect of a fit he would be on our top line.

Pass. That is good value we'd have to give up for a locker room cancer. His San Jose teammates didn't even want him on their team anymore.

If he was 25 years old and was motivated to change like Ho-Sang, that is one thing. We can at least dump Ho-Sang at any time.

Kane is 30 years old and would still cost 3.5 mill for multiple years even if he has 50% retention. He has been facing the same issues for pretty much his entire career. He is what he is, and while he may be a good player, I think he needs to focus on getting his life together before he can get his career together. It would be very hard to do that here.

I don't even want to know what our media would do to him.

He’s probably been the best power winger in the league over the past couple seasons.

There is needing to mature and there is being a POS human being. Kane falls into the latter.

Very good player, and would be a great fit, but wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole.
