What's interesting, especially if Mikheyev comes back strong, is that there's no glaring need for Dubey to upgrade anything urgently.

Which gives him the luxury of combing through the market and looking for more of just a BPA approach to the deadline - not sure if it matters if it's an affordable impact top 6 forward or top 4 dman, really. Either might upgrade something that is already very good into something that's super elite.

I would probably agree. I'd wait to see how Bunting and Mikheyev play over the next few weeks and months before making a huge move.

The Leafs should probably trade Dermott at this rate and find him a fresh start though. I don't think he deserves to sit out that much. That ~1.5M cap space could be useful to keep the roster 22 players.

Except you only save max $750k to do so, and have a much poorer 7th D man in the process. I only do this, if I can find a physical D man replacement, but then, we probably don't save any cap space with such a move. At this point, I hold onto Dermott, until the offseason, unless we can find a physical D man replacement.

You do but we probably get a pick back in the process (or some solid value anyway) and let Dermott go to a team that will play him every day. I don't really care about physicality all that much to be perfectly honest.

The Leafs need to cut cap space somewhere when Mikheyev and Mrazek are back.

I'd include Dermott in my Donskoi Soucy scheme

Leafs will be forced to make a move of some sort when those 2 are back. If Lilly keeps up his play, there is no way he deserves to be sent down. Something will have to happen.

If they could trade Dermott for a draft pick and a veteran defenseman who they can plug in to play when they need to I would do that. Eitherwise I think it might be best to hold on to him for now.

I think we have adequate depth to call-up someone like Rubins, Menell, Biega or even Kral to be the 7th defenseman. One of these defensemen I'm sure can give you decent efficiency in a depth role at the very least.

I don't really get this notion that it HAS to be a veteran or someone "physical", at least not right away. By the deadline, the Leafs can always go shopping for one if none of our options show to be adequate.

We need to cut a little cap space when Mikheyev and Mrazek are back. Dermott is pretty solid but it might be a good time to sell "high" and get back something solid. And it's a good favour to him to get a chance at a fresh start somewhere.

He's been senile for a while. His mistakes just haven't caught up with him yet.
That Teows deal was bad at the time, and is now a complete disaster by Lou. Isles because of Covid are only playing one regular d man, and Teows could have helped them right now. Lou only has himself to blame for those bad depth contracts that it costed him a good d man.

If the they are going to go far in the playoffs you usually go through 8 or 9 Dman. If our number 7 D is one of those guys I don’t know? We will never know unless they play but it does make me a bit nervous. They could also be better than who ever we trade for to so it works both ways.

That's fair. I agree depth is always great and in a perfect world, I'd 100% keep Dermott. I like him a lot.

If only they still had Leddy. Oh well, two mummified corpses in Chara and Greene are good enough, and that slight downgrade from Leddy+Towes allowed them to afford elite forwards like Pageau and Palmieri with their combined 11 points in 31 games. Talk about a steal for 10 mil+ through their mid-30s.

Not that it would help the team right now but as a poster on the previous page mentioned, I'd be interested in making a soft deal for Alex Nylander and putting him through the motions with the Marlies a la Ho-Sang.

He was incredibly skilled as a junior and maybe the intrigue of potentially getting to play with his brother would be motivation enough to get back on track.

I wonder what the cost would be?

I feel like Engvall for Nylander could be something both teams do, unless the Leafs just want a mid-round pick instead. Engvall is likely coming out of the lineup once Mikheyev is back. We can keep our defensive depth for a little while longer.

We just added Clifford and we are already struggling to fit Semyonov and Anderson into the lineup as it is, so we have guys who can replace Engvall.

We would just need to send Clifford and Semyonov down to afford Mrazek, Mikheyev, and a 7th defenseman with ~500k to spare.

Building up Alex Nylander and getting him to be a regular by 2023 may also be a solid move to get Willy on a team friendly next deal.

He's a young defenseman with project-able tools and we have shown we can develop young defenseman in our system recently

That's why

Absolutely, don't even need to be remotely convinced grabbing Dobson would be amazing for us.

If we didn’t waste a bunch of picks on Rittich/Hutton/Foligno at the trade deadline, I would have loved to send a picks heavy package to the Canucks for Horvat or Miller.

As an organization I don’t think we can afford to spend even more picks in a trade with an expensive roster that needs cheap players on ELCs.

1st + 3rd + 4th + 4th + 5th would have been a great starting point for an offer.

I mean that's nice and all but right now he's a struggling #6 dman on a team that is desperately using geriatric dmen for its 2nd pair.

That's fine but we've proven we can develop kids games and help them become excellent young defenseman

It wasn't that long ago Liljegren looked pretty rough but we helped him overcome his problems and now he looks like he could be anything

Dobson has tools, I'd love for our staff to get a hold of that kid
