No Dermott at morning skate. Rubins starting? No injury to Dermott known of. Do we have a trade to announce?

I guess my point is that Ullmark is not a 6.1% player himself, so 6.1% was already an overpay for him. Therefore using the fact that Ullmark received 6.1% as a justification for paying Campbell 6.4% will just lead to an even more egregious overpay.

If Campbell continues his strong season, he is in that 6% range for 4 years. Before this season, he would have been in the Mrazek range at best (which is sub-5% on a 3 year deal). A 1+ point improvement with an extra year is more than enough to compensate him for one quality season.

UFA's routinely get overpaid though so if we can't justify overpaying him as a UFA, more than likely someone else will. And that's why I had an extension for him as my #1 summer priority and why I want it done now, while we still have a tiny bit of leverage on our side.

I mean 6.1% could be an overpay for all of those guys. However these guys are all in the same boat. They were all UFA's. Maybe all of them were overpaid, and giving Campbell even a 6.1% contract is an overpayment.

If his mindset is to get overpaid in UFA, or to get the Grubauer contract, then the Leafs likely are going to let him go just like they did with Hyman. Even if they could afford to do it, I doubt the Leafs would want to pay Campbell like that. They are just looking at Grubauer in Seattle and thinking that if someone else wants to pay him a retirement contract, then let them deal with the consequences.

The Leafs probably had a ceiling on what they are paying their goalie tandem, and Campbell specifically, since last year. They are probably going to need to give Campbell their ceiling, but I don't think the Leafs are going to break it... Which is why they committed to Mrazek for 3 years at that amount. If they need to let Campbell go and instead turn to a Fleury, Kuemper, or maybe Holtby on an Andersen deal like Carolina did, then they likely are comfortable with that.

And quite frankly, I am good with the Leafs deciding not to pay Campbell like he is a top 10 goalie in the NHL after one (obviously amazing) year. 6% puts him in the teens, and that is more than fair given his age and resume.

Should of extended him last summer when he most likely could have been signed at a reasonable price.

Harrington would be ok but I think I'd rather see what we have. We have a good amount of capable depth defenseman that need a look.

We need a depth center a whole lot more than a depth defenseman.

People do realize that Harrington has a 1.65 mill cap hit right?

We can't afford him, and even if we did, he is making twice what he is worth.

I hadn't looked that up. Thanks for pointing that out, that means he likely goes unclaimed. Marner goes to LTIR though... and we can afford that.

Yeah it's actually nice to have some roster space to give some of the Marlies guys a chance tbh. No need or desire imo to pick up waiver wire fodder to block them.

It should help decision making as the trade deadline approaches in terms of if they need to bring in some depth.

Yeah the last couple of years of cap crunch + insane health on D had really limited the opportunity for some of these guys. Heck Lilly couldn't even get a look. So it's nice to see rubins getting a chance...and if it doesn't work, guys like duszak and menell would be interesting too.

Steeves as well .. Perhaps JHS gets a chance while Marner is out.

I don't know why Joey Anderson is not getting a consistent look. He played 13 minutes in his first game, did well, and then was benched after 3 minutes in his second game? Even if he was absolute trash, and he was far from it, and they were shortening the bench, it seems odd to only play the guy for 3 minutes and then send him down again. He deserves an extended look with these injuries/suspensions.

I don't get it either. He seems a whole lot better than Clifford to me. I think waivers might have played a part in it, but he would have been up for awhile with Marner out for a month anyway.

It just feels weird the Leafs traded Johnsson for him and have consistently buried him.

I don't think we will see HoSang with the Leafs until next season.

Or at least until the team can guarantee they won't lose him to waivers (right before the playoffs)
There is no rush with him IMO, we know has the skillset we value just need to make sure its on all the time. Apparently he's doing it but the season aint over. I really root for him but hopefully he can do it for a season and then we can sign him easy peasy next season.

We are definitely gonna lose some players...im already fearing losing Kase.

I was hoping Steeves would get a look somewhere like PP2 or something, 4th line is hard to accomplish anything. I noticed him reading the play really well but Engvall seemed a step behind on it. I think that likely has to do with Engvall not playing centre at all this year until now.

If we are going to go for a long run in the playoffs , we will need 10 dman .
Rubins looked very steady last night.
At some point this season would love to see what we have in Kral.

This off season we will have to choose who to trade .
It will be a first in a long time, dealing from a position off strength .

Mo
Brodie
Muzzin
Holl
Sandin
Lilly
Dermot
Rubins
Kral

We finally can trade a couple of d for picks and not be hurt.

I was raving about Kral in pre-season. I figured in 2 years when Muzzin is expiring, he is making the team.

Rielly-Sandin-Kral at that point on LD.

Maybe there are some waiver considerations there. He is waiver eligible but is currently exempt since he cleared earlier in the season, that exemption disappears after 30 days on the NHL roster or 10 NHL games played - They might be saving that time.

That said I don't know if that works quite like that.
