Weird, we're actually solid at LD with Rielly, Muzzin, Sandin and to a lesser extent, Sandin.

Chiarot has been put at RD on occaision but is awful at it.
Chiarot would be number 8 on our team - I am not convinced he is an upgrade on any of the 7 we have. Imagine idiotically giving premium assets for that piece of crap? I'd want Dubas fired on the spot.

Only person I'd want to target to upgrade our defence at this point would be Demelo. If Winnipeg would retain even 500k-1 mil of the contract that'd be even better.

Chiarot played top 4 minutes for the Habs in the playoffs last season and actually looked good in that spot. I wouldn't go as far as saying he would be a #8.

I think he's looked better than what Holl and Muzzin have provided for a majority of the season.

C Riley Sheahan

:seattle
C Kirill Semyonov
LD Teemu Kivihalme

Sheahan cleared waivers about a week ago, so we can stash him on the Marlies as depth until we need him. He is a decent defensive specialist, and helps us with some injuries on the Marlies plus losing Brooks and Amadio on waivers. It costs us practically nothing except for money, and we open up an extra contract spot.

Seattle saves some money, gets an extra depth guy for their AHL squad in Kivihalme (they only have 34 contracts right now), and can see if they catch lightning in the bottle with Semyonov (similar to San Jose and Barabanov), which has more value than whatever Sheahan is to them.

:leafs
RW/LW Alex Nylander

:hawks
LW/C Pierre Engvall

We need cap space once Mikheyev and Mrazek are back in early December. Mikheyev replaces Engvall and we can turn to the likes of Clifford, Anderson, Sheahan, Nylander, etc. as depth options, so Engvall is the easiest option for opening up the room. We can also stash Nylander on the Marlies and try to rehab his value like we are doing with Ho-Sang. He is also going to be a lot closer to the NHL, and likely a better bet, than the mid-round pick we'd get in return for Engvall, so the Leafs are going to be more interested in that.

Chicago gets a solid young player who can upgrade a number of spots in their lineup. I doubt they can get a better return than that for Nylander.

Leafs Lineup
LW Michael Bunting – C Auston Matthews – RW Mitch Marner
LW Alex Kerfoot – C John Tavares – RW William Nylander
LW Ilya Mikheyev – C David Kampf – RW Ondrej Kase
LW Nick Ritchie – C Jason Spezza – RW Wayne Simmonds

LD Morgan Rielly – RD T.J. Brodie
LD Jake Muzzin – RD Justin Holl
LD Travis Dermott – RD Timothy Liljegren
LD Rasmus Sandin

G Jack Campbell – G Petr Mrazek

Marlies Lineup
LW Brett Seney – C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev – RW Joey Anderson
LW Alex Steeves – C Mikhail Abramov – RW Josh Ho-Sang
LW Nick Robertson – C Marc Michaelis – RW Alex Nylander
LW Riley Sheahan – C Curtis Douglas – RW Pavel Gogolev
LW Kyle Clifford - C Antti Suomela - RW Jack Kopacka
LW Rich Clune/RW Kurtis Gabriel

LD Carl Dahlstrom – RD Alex Biega
LD Kristians Rubins – RD Joseph Duszak
LD Filip Kral – RD Brennan Menell
LD Noel Hoefenmayer – RD Mac Hollowell
LD Matt Hellickson - RD Ben Finkelstein

G Erik Kallgren - G Joseph Woll
G Michael Hutchinson

Leafs would be 466k under the 81.5 mill cap without anyone on LTIR.

Yes, Habs are our arch rivals etc etc but ultimately, Chiarot is definitely not a #8 defenseman on this team.

I would like to try to find an upgrade for the top 4 defense, specifically the right side.

Blackhawks already have quite a few excess forwards...maybe something like Carptenter and A.Nylander for Engvall+?

We can bury Carpenter with no cap ramifications but it at at least clears some space for Chicago off the roster.

Pretty sure I made at least a couple of posts on here during the offseason hoping for the leafs to trade for Lemieux.

Lemieux was never a target anymore after signing Nick Ritchie. Even before this Biting incident.

Leafs need a top 6/9 LW who can play a heavy style of game. JT Miller would be ideal. Brandon Tanev maybe?

Andrew Copp would be a good add, but he might get a pretty good pay raise when he hits the open market after this season.

He's being absolutely torn apart right now.

Jacob "who?" Stoller just couldn't miss a chance to pile on and cancel someone by bringing up anecdotes with zero context. What a libellous clown comment, stay out of player rivalries when you're an AHL writer.

I don't really know much about him. What's the story with this Jacob Stoller? Is he known to make shit up?

does that make this information incorrect?

Guys like Copp need to be picked up before they break out. Now he's probably pretty tough to acquire.

He always negotiates hard, 1-2 year deals. I suspect he either just wants the most $$ possible or doesn't want to be in Winnipeg, or both.

I would not be surprised if he was there as a UFA on July 1st but I don't see the Leafs being the ones to sign him, just don't have the cap space required to do it.

Red Wings will be all over him.

It’s less about contract negotiations and more about availability. Those guys that bloom a little later can sometimes be plucked for a good price.
