Rumour has it Murray is going on waivers, if the Leafs can swing a deal to move Mrazek, would it be a good idea to pick him up?
Why wouldnt they trade him to San Jose for Kane?
Don’t even have to play kane but sj prob makes the deal without retention or only retaining small amount?
They could eventually get something for Kane eventually lol

I’m surprised some have such little faith in Dubas. Sure he’s made mistakes but give him a little credit. Not a chance he would give Kane more than a moments thought and that would only be to laugh at the idea.

Is there a player league wide that would be a worse idea?
Getting him at a bargain retained for a few years
If they can make it fit I’d be all over this
This guy with matthews and marner wow

Arizona could prob help to make contract even cheaper ;)

I mean, if they're throwing in a 1st AND retaining 50% of course. I don't see that happening, though.

Probably not but gets the conversation started. I mean we likely just want the Mrazek money off the books so we can make Campbell whole anyway. But if we can pick up a draft pick and maybe get a higher upside goalie to rehabilitate it would be somewhat interesting.

Stephen my man if the Sens want to retain half on Murray and send us a 1st in exchange for Mrazek, I'll sign the papers right now.

Murray isn't much of a fit for San Jose with Reimer and Hill in net. Quite restrictive NTCs for both players as well, Kane in particular.

Struggling goaltender Matt Murray expected to be placed on waivers Saturday by Senators | Ottawa Sun

Push has come to shove with underachieving goaltender Matt Murray.

The Ottawa Senators’ top goaltender didn’t even dress for the club’s 4-0 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Friday, the third game of a Western road swing, and he will be placed on waivers Saturday at 2 p.m.

Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman reported Friday night that Murray could be waived after being a healthy scratch against the Ducks, and the indications are that’s about to happen. The indications are Murray was informed of the decision by Senators general manager Pierre Dorion following Friday’s contest.

This may be nothing more than a wakeup call to try to get Murray back on track.

Making $6.25 million per season, Murray, who has two Stanley Cup rings from his tenure with the Pittsburgh Penguins, hasn’t played up to his capabilities. He allowed four goals on 27 shots in Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks, is winless in six starts this season with an 0-5-0 record, .826 save-percentage and 3.26 goals-against average.

The Buffalo Sabres and Arizona Coyotes are both looking for goaltending help and would be teams to keep an eye on.

Trying to find one of the three goaltenders to carry the ball and run with it, Senators head coach D.J. Smith opted to start Anton Forsberg and dressing Filip Gustavsson as backup on Friday. Smith said Gustavsson would start Saturday at the Staples Center against the Los Angeles Kings.

Yes, with three goalies on the roster, the Senators had to choose somebody to sit, but the decision to leave Murray out completely is a further signal he’s lost his grip on the No. 1 goaltending job, and the 27-year-old is being sent a message that the coaching staff has had it with his inconsistency.

The Senators don’t have a lot of options with Murray and, quite frankly, it’s in their best interests to find a way to get him going. Yes, if he clears waivers he could be sent to the American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville to try to get his game together, but it also allows other teams that may be interested to make a deal.

Murray has a 10-18-1 record in 33 career games with the Senators, along with an .892 save-percentage and a 3.35 goals-against average. He was dealt to Ottawa by Pittsburgh in October 2020.

Smith had some harsh words about the goaltending after the loss in San Jose, but didn’t have anything bad to say about Friday’s effort from Forsberg, who allowed four goals on 34 shots.

“I thought Forsberg was good for us. We just made a few too many mistakes,” Smith said.

He was a magician around the net but away from it, he was definitely not that good.

he always infuriated me because he refused to actually screen the goalie and would always just stand to the side of them instead of in front of them. JT is a far better netfront presence and I would argue even Bunting and Simmer may be because of this.

Short answer: no

Long answer: The guy has a 6.25M cap hit contract for the next 2.5 years.
Holy hell.

Someone is advocating to claim or trade for a goalie that the dead last team in the NHL is waiving with a $6.25 cap hit (the same as Campbell, Mrazek, and Woll COMBINED) and who can't stay healthy and hasn't stopped a puck in years?

What the hell is wrong with some people?

Murray at 50% retained and a 1st for Mrazek would have me considering that as a possibility. Soo Greyhound after all.
That's an expensive ECHL'er.

No thanks.

Edit: Don't think Ottawa is going to trade the #1 overall pick, or anywhere close to it.

We still need to resign Campbell. I don’t see anything that makes sense to trade for Matt Murray and still somehow sign Campbell. Stay clear of that cap hit!

For some reason I thought they had more first round picks this year, but yeah, a 1st overall would be a no go on a Murray dump. (Though if they want to give us a 1st overall to make this happen, I would think about long and hard).

My gamble on this deal would be we get a goalie with the same cap hit as Mrazek roughly, but with cup experience and some unknown issues and upside. He's also a band aid, so I assume LTIR could factor in as well. But it would be a bit of a potential toxic project.

The 99.9% preferred scenario would be to gently move off Mrazek at some point and make our guy Campbell rich and avoid Murray altogether.

Quick Shifts: 6 players who should already be trade bait - Sportsnet.ca

We count eight NHL clubs that have already sunk under .500 and must leapfrog at least five teams to rally for a wildcard spot.

In a league that hands out loser points as freely as bobbleheads, that’s a heckuva tall order. So, even with months left in the season, we’re telling the Sabres, Islanders, Canadiens, Senators, Blackhawks, Canucks, Kraken, and Coyotes to toss in the towel.

Start getting ready to trade expiring assets. Get worse. Improve your odds of landing Shane Wright.

(Detroit, Dallas and California: You’re safe for now, but let’s check back at Christmas.)

Among those organizations that should be taking stock of what they may have to offer the rental market, the pickings are slim. But contenders should start thinking now about good talent worth pillaging from bad teams.

Here’s an early peek at our 2022 All-Trade-Rental Team.

Scott Wedgewood (G): The 29-year-old Arizona journeyman has quietly composed a .920 save percentage through 10 appearances with a generationally awful roster. Decent backup option.

Ben Chiarot (LD): Montreal’s nasty stay-at-home defenceman skates roughly 23 minutes a night on the top unit, comes with a manageable $3.5-million cap hit, and is fresh off a Cup Final appearance. He should be the most coveted guy on this list.

Colin Miller (RD): The Sabres right shot has already put up 11 points and is logging more than 20 minutes a night, mostly against top forwards. He might not crack an elite group’s top four but would upgrade most third pairings.

Zach Sanford (LW): Sanford is only 27. He won a championship with St. Louis as a gritty depth winger, which is where he’d slot on a buyer. He currently has five goals with the Sens and is seeing some action on their top unit.

Chris Tierney (C): We’ll stick in Kanata for this one. Decent rental centres will be hard to come by. A solid 3C, Tierney has five goals this season for Ottawa.

Phil Kessel (RW): The 34-year-old potential Hall of Famer isn’t finding the net like the old days, but the two-time Cup champ still has 10 points in 20 games. Kessel is only minus-2 on a minus-37 team and could be reinvigorated playing games that matter again.

How weird would it feel to acquire Ben Chiarot for a premium after hate watching him the past little while?

Leafs - Canucks
JT Miller @ 50% Retained (Playoffs + Next Season)
for
Ilya Mikheyev, Justin Holl (Cap), Topi Niemela & 1st

Leafs - Canadiens
Ben Chiarot @ 50%

Playoff Lines

None of those really feel like upgrades to our team, and are too pricey just for depth options.

I would avoid the rental market unless we can get a cheap depth guy on defense if we move a guy like Holl at some point. That's it for now. We'll see if we have a need for another guy at the TDL because of injury, but in terms of upgrading our roster, there aren't really any out there that are worth our while...

And historically, adding (major) rentals does not really improve your chances at winning the Cup. Most teams that have won the Cup in the past decade or so have not added major rentals at the TDL. Vermette was one when he went to CHI. Tampa paid a lot for Savard last year but he sucked and had little to do with them winning,

Either pay for a guy with term who can help for multiple runs, like Coleman and Goodrow, or toss out 'meh' prospects and mid-late round picks to get some depth guys who can help upgrade the fringes of your roster a little bit, like we did by moving Korshkov for Galchenyuk.
