I wonder if this gives any indication that Guerin plans to bring up two guys from Iowa at the start of the year. Maybe instead of Rossi + free agent signing, it'll be Rossi + Shaw and this guy will take Shaw's spot in Iowa.

I’m happy for Sammy that he put in his 4 years at the U, rather than go the CHL route like his brothers. That should help him in his post hockey life, if nothing else. We’ll see if he can find another gear to his game. He has some intriguing skills, and is a rink rat, but needs to improve. Is it as simple as him bulking up?

His EP stats say he's only 165 lbs. So adding some bulk would probably do him some good. His game is speed so there is that line where adding too much weight will take away some of the speed. A year in the AHL should do him some good with their strength and diet coaches.

Guerin should try to work something out with Montreal, they’re going to need to move pieces now to get under the cap.

Dadonov is an interesting target imo (with additional pieces coming back - 2nd+), but we’d need to move out Kulikov.

The EP stats are often based on very old stats. I think that it says that he is 180 on the Gopher's roster page. He is definitely more of a lean, than thick type, but is at least 5'10" (stats pages say 5'11", usually). That's not tiny.... I would guess that he would have just as much, if not more opportunity to gain weight and muscle at the U than playing pro, which can grind the weight off of you during the season.

You can never be too strong, or big, but i don't know that is holding Sammy back. He's always had an edge to him...is definitely the type to give someone a whack on the ankles after a whistle. Speed is a plus, as is quickness. Moves and shot are at least decent. I don't know what has kept him from advancing his game in college... I thought he was better than his pojnt totals, but still, and offensive player like him needs to produce.

If nothing else, he will make for some nice depth down in Iowa. He should be the fastest player down there.

MTL is fine. They'll just put Price (knee) on LTIR and open up $10m in LTIR cap.

They need to be cap complaint at the beginning of the season with him on the roster though, right?

They still have a few signings to make too. This trade from Calgary would’ve really been a perfect move for us if we had an extra $3M+ from not having Kulikov or Goligoski. Having another 1st round pick for the 24-26 season would have been great capital for trades.

Similiar to this, seen rumors Oilers are trying to get Patrick Kane. They too are already over the cap. Would there be any pieces on that team for a Center trade?

So Sammy was Mr. Hockey back in the day - just curious, how many Mr. Hockeys have been under a Wild contract? I know Rau was one.

Quiet a few:

Peart (needs a contract)
Peterson (drafted, not signed I don't think)
Kloos
Rau
Bjudstad
Leddy (drafted, not signed)
Taffe
Crowley (signed by Houston)
Bonin
Hendrickson

That's a pretty sad list.

Burns was just at a different level, if you take away his best 5 seasons he is still kind of better than Leddy.

That trade is kind of ugly now but Burns didn't really blow up until 4-5 years after moving out west, just a late late bloomer.

*In the voice of Cliff Clavin* I think there are two ways of looking at Burns vs. Leddy trades. You can focus on the upside of what we lost (Burns) or the downside of what we "gained" (Barker). Depending on your approach, you'll view one of the two trades as worse.

For me, I like to take a pseudo-mathematical approach. Take the value of the player(s) gained, and divide it by the value of the player(s) lost. The higher the number, the better the trade. Barker is basically a zero in the numerator, so no matter how bad the Burns trade, I have the Leddy trade as worse because at least Coyle did something positive.

(Admittedly, I have no real way of quantifying this, it's just a though exercise.)
