He offered Sturm a good contract, but Sturm didn't want to be here - and for a good reason and Sturm was right. We'll see what his contract looks like when free agency hits. Sturm got his ring, got to be a part of something big. He also was a face off specialist (didn't do great in the playoffs, but didn't see a lot of chances) that Minnesota doesn't have.

Talbot's agent is doing what is best for his client. Given the crap that was pulled in the spring, I wouldn't be surprised if Talbot/agent isn't happy about his usage. More so, does anyone remember that Talbot had a minor injury that may have affected him this spring?

More so, it isn't just contracts that I was discussing.

Actually, it was just contracts that you were pointing at in your original quote that spurred this discussion. Now that you're wrong you're trying to pivot and turn it into something else..

Who said they are trying to walk all over Guerin? He doesn't seem good at this negotiation thing.

As someone mentioned here, why the hell is he giving fair deals to other GMs, but not any of his players? He's overpaying for his buddies (we'll see what Dumba's extension looks like), pissing off his young players and other players that don't seem to be in lock step with him and his vision.

So what exactly is your point?

Sturm is only right in that he is allowed to bet on himself. he turned down right about the best contract offer he will get because he didnt like the way he will be used. in no way shape or form is that a "BG sucks at his job" moment. Talbot/Fleury situation can be debated plenty as there is a ton of speculation about promised playing time from BG n what not but nothing has been confirmed and obviously the more we speculate the worse one side or the other can look.

BG has been average, made some good signings and some bad ones. I dont love or hate him and his moves, sometimes I wish he would try harder to win trades but at the same time I understand the thought process of not wanting to build a reputation of only being a willing trade partner if I get the better end of the deal.

This is exactly how I feel. He's been average. I took the "I'm doing fair deals" as lip service, as you typically don't say, "I'm looking to screw over other teams".

Let's say he's average at negotiations in all aspects, contracts and trading. HOWEVER, let's say his (and Judd, but he brought Judd in) drafting is superb. Would the drafting negate some of the deficiencies he "has" in negotiations?

Would you rather have someone good at draft but average in negotiations? Or someone good at negotiations but average at drafting?

So what exactly is your point?
My point goes back to the Tweet (if it's correct) and how Minnesota is trying to 'make it work' with Talbot when his camp has been pretty unhappy with the team since Fleury was brought in during the trade deadline. I don't think it's 100% on Guerin that this situation has turned into a mess, but Talbot isn't someone that this team should die on the hill over. If Guerin (and it's a big IF) has received this trade offer, it shouldn't be about making Talbot happy, it's about fitting under the cap. Talbot is a FA at the end of this season as well and more than likely is going to leave.

I mentioned multiple things in this post that spurred the discussion. Read beyond the first line; Sturm didn't want to sign an extension, Fiala felt spurned the first contract negotiation (and Guerin REALLY took it personally this offseason), couldn't get McBain locked down, couldn't get get Meyers signed, got mad at Menell, and got a little short when asked about Rossi.

JEE is definitely not overpaid, nor is he a 3C. Cmon people.

JEE was a bottom 6 center up until Koivu retired. There were a LOT of questions about his offensive production.

Let's say he's average at negotiations in all aspects, contracts and trading. HOWEVER, let's say his (and Judd, but he brought Judd in) drafting is superb. Would the drafting negate some of the deficiencies he "has" in negotiations?

Drafting is only as good as long as you sign the players. More so, managing contracts and working with agents is crucial to building a team.

I dont think it is all lip service as he has said time and time again he learned to not win a trade but make a fair deal so he is looking for purely equal value in and out nothing more nothing less.

I am much more comfortable to have someone superb at drafting but average at negotiations however I would want them to be able to learn and grow with what they are only average at. He is not a newbie GM anymore, he has had a few years, few seasons, few signings and negotiations under his belt. Knowing his weaknesses I wont be looking for him to go steal some FA with amazing words. I expect him to continue delegating to Judd to draft well and then keeping every line open in regards to trades if a deal is right. He wont go shooting for a jackpot but he will pull the trigger on a good not great trade.

We can't even afford our roster without Fiala at the moment. Thinking Guerin just let him go because of prior contract negotiations is some made up lala bullshit. People really should be more pissed at Chuck Fletcher for dishing out those horrendous contracts to Parise and Suter.

I’m more pissed at the league retroactively punishing us for what was legal at the time.

Just want to be clear, the second part wasn’t directed at you specifically. I was using the general you.

And that's revisionist history there.

My biggest concern moving forward is what they are going to do with Dumba.

Minnesota can't afford Pulj. His cap is going to be larger than Talbot's and then we need to go out and find a backup goaltender. Then our starter is a soon to be 38 year old and a question mark as a backup.

I think that tweet is 100% made up.

Who knows but I do know that Edmonton is having trouble trading Pools. His QO was only 1.4 as well so who knows what he'll take for a contract.

Just bring up McIntyre

Point is that a lot of fans were concerned about paying 5.25 million for a 15 goal 40 point center if even that.

Don't all 3rd line centers get the most TOI/G among all their teams centers?
Now should he be getting that much time? Another discussion entirely.

In regards to that Puljujarvi trade rumor, if Talbot was 100% happy and there weren't already rumblings, I'm not sure I'd do it. For me it depends on which pick it is, and which prospect. Puljujarvi is a player who you'd want in your top-6, but doesn't produce well enough to actually be there. Yes, he's said to be a good 2-way forward, but from what I've heard he sort of disappears in a bad way once put in the bottom 6. I think, to me, Talbot's worth more than him. Still, it's at least interesting, I just wish I knew if I could trust that rumor, and what the futures are.

I really don't care what you call it. Anyone with some understanding of 6th grade math knew this team couldn't afford Kaprizov and Fiala at over $16M.

I think his fate is pretty clear with trading Fiala for a RHD and a replacement LWer at the draft.

He's going to get over $3M for sure. My guess is $4M. That's a lot for a guy who has never scored 40 points playing next to some guy named McDavid.

That’s an oversimplification. He’s also a Selke contender and a possession monster. Anyone saying that wasn’t paying attention and has since been proven wrong

It could have been done but you had to make sacrifices in other places, instead we elected for some ok depth. Would have been so much smarter to sign him to a decent long term deal last year when we all wanted them to, all water under the bridge now.

Can you imagine the outrage if the wild elected to pass on landing Parise and Suter at that time? We all knew the contracts were going to be painful in the end but you kind of had to take that chance. We had some solid vets, a great group of young guys and they seemed like they might be enough to give us a chance, in the end it didn't work out but any GM turning them down at the time would have been crazy.

The only point is Guerin sucks...there's nothing else.
It's without merit, but that doesn't matter.
The point is that Guerin needs to show some growth as a first time GM. His drafting so far has been pretty good and I am glad that he has continued to overturned the staff and moved on beyond the old core, but his nepotism is getting old.

How is that revisionist history? Those contracts were always going to screw things up near the end. Fiala just became the victim in time.
People really should be more pissed at Chuck Fletcher for dishing out those horrendous contracts to Parise and Suter.

Most fans were acceptable of the contracts and didn't think they were horrendous. They knew the consequences. It's revisionist to say that people should be pissed at Fletcher and the contracts were horrendous. Terrible? Kind of but most people were fine with them.
