Would be nice if our part in the StL/Toronto trade was doing them a solid in front of sending Dumba to Toronto at 50% retained for their 2024 1st.

Dumba 50% retained = $3M
Toronto cap space = $3.6M

Coincidence?

They're the only team that I'm holding out hope for getting a first for Dumba from. Everybody else, I can see a 2nd+ being the best that's offered.
I'd take that trade anyday for dumba.

I don’t think there is any chance Dubas moved Knies or his 24’ first. That team has so many expiring deals going into 24 offseason, that they’re going to need all the picks when they can’t sign everyone, plus Knies is their best prospect. Not a chance they move for a bottom 4 defensemen that’s a rental.

You could be right, but the clock is ticking on Mathew’s contract. Dubas HAS to have some playoff series wins, right now. They are a vg team, but have to face some vg teams just to get out of their division, so he will be motivated to do anything that will help them now.
I am very familiar with the pressure to win in Toronto. Fans, and ownership, will not be forgiving if they lose again in the first round, or even the second, and if Mathews demands a trade after another one and done the outcry would be even worse.

Conversely, if the Leafs win for the first time since 1967 they will become Demi-gods, and Dubas will have won himself years of employment, either with the Leafs, or another team.

It’s a long winded way of saying that they should overpay, if necessary, for pieces that can help now.

This is why the 2025 1st is more interesting to me. TOR could be at the start of an extended tank/rebuild period. So even if it's a protected 1st MN should would get a 2026 unprotected 1st (potentially a very high) from them.

I agree, but GM’s, and aging owners, don’t think that way. It’s likely about 2029-30 before even a top puck is an effective NHL player, and Guerin will be fired long before if he doesn’t have a Cup center before that. What incentive does he have to stock the prospect pool for his successor?

I mean he's doing it now, so there is that.

There are a few playoff teams that are desperate for goalies. As much as I love Gus, we do have Wallstedt playing really well in the AHL, and Fleury signed for one more year. Gus or not, I don’t see us being Cup contenders next year.

What would LAK or EDM pay for Gus at the TDL? What would be enough for you? I think the Eastern teams of note are all set.

Would you trade Gus for an unimpressive ( so far) Byfield? Holloway and a 1st? I’m a big goalie guy, so I don’t think I would, but the thought that Byfield could be the next Tage Thompson has crossed my mind.

I would trade Gus for Byfield and I’d add to do it. We’ve seen goalies like Gus put together an excellent run for a year or two and ultimately end up a flash in the pan. I’m not saying Gus doesn’t have a future as a legit 1A but it’s possible he’s outperforming his ceiling right now and we’d be selling high

Neither team would offer those trades.

I’m fairly confident neither of those teams would do that, and we’d be the ones adding.

I’m trying to think of any trades where a goalie gets a first back, without significant adds around the deal, and the only one that comes to mind is Keumper to Colorado. Which was off-season, rental trade essentially after Colorado missed out on options 1-3 and were forced to overpay. Ryan Miller to STL had a first involved, but also like 6 more pieces if I recall.

Georgiv was two 3rds and a pick. Husso was a 3rd.

Cory Schneider was traded for a top 10 pick.

He was, but the circumstances were different. Cory Schneider had years of acumen as a backup and was considered a world class prospect before that.
Gus not having multiple years with these numbers is exactly why we are going to get a relatively low AAV on his contract this summer. If he starts 60%+ next year and has similar numbers, then his value skyrockets.

Do we worry that with MAF here, he won’t get the volume?

I would think our front office would realize the massive downgrade, but history across the league shows it isn’t always the case

If MAF is the one getting the majority of starts, we are probably tanking.

I wonder if Pittsburgh would be interested in MAF <—> Zucker swap. I could see Zucker signing a cheap contract (w/ NMC) to play in Minnesota closer to his family.

Hasn't Zucker actually been decent this year? Not sure why Pens would do that.

maybe Edmonton would want one of our d prospects too? Holloway+1st for Gus+ROR or something; I don’t see them trading Holloway and 1st for Gus though.

Why do we want to trade Gus?

If we sign Gus 3x3 (or less), that fits our timeline pretty well.
Next year: Gus primary goalie. MAF backup
Year 2: Gus primary goalie. Wallstedt backup
Year 3: Even split? Wallstedt primary? Gus primary?

There's no guarantee Wallstedt turns out. He looks hella promising, but nothing is guaranteed.

I mean ideally we find a way to move MAF or he retires after this year.

A mid late 1st and a mid 1st prospect who has injury problems for an elite #1 goalie who is a RFA with a tiny qualifying offer? For team that has the best player in hockey, but can’t get over the hump because of their poor goaltending? EDM’s window is now. Holloway has been a disappointment, so far. They’d be crazy not to do it, but I wouldn’t do it from MN’s perspective.
Some think that Holloway’s best position in the NHL will be wing, anyway.
That trade would net us nothing but more(maybe)good, but not great, players.

I am not suggesting that we trade Gus for any old prospect. I am thinking Byfield, who has a chance to be really good( has not been, so far). This is not Beniers that we are talking about, a #2 oa who came into the NHL and has played fantastic, or even a Lundell. This is a guy who has played disappointingly in the NHL so far, and has missed a lot of games due to injury, preventing him from even getting a lot of AHL games in.

There is also no guarantee Gus doesn't fall off a cliff. Wild fans going nuts for a goalie with 52 career games under his belt is just silly. The guy has a LOT more to prove - don't crown him yet.

You trade him if the return helps you down the middle in the long run - otherwise keep him imo.

Im fine riding MAF/Wallstedt next year and let the dice fall where they may. MAF is a MUCH better mentor for Wallstedt then Gus.
