$500k when we were set to have $16M at the trade deadline. Hardly an issue.
where are you getting the 16M at the TD from according to CapFriendly

CURRENT CAP SPACE

: $9,823,493
DEADLINE CAP SPACE

I would really like to have an extra 1st in this draft but I'm not sure how we get it. Dumba+Greenway? Foligno retained? Hartman? I'm not sure any of that gets it done.

How attached are you to Boldy or Kap? One of them will get you a 1st...

I guess I just don't understand the cap system at all.

If you go to capfriendly and just add cap hits for forwards+defense+goalies+deadcap the cap hit is $78,951,088 + O'Reilly's 1,875,000 = 80,826,088 and the salary cap is 82,500,000.

That should mean 1,673,912 in cap space but for some reason all of this turns into 16 million in cap space and only $557,000,000 in cap hit for O'Reilly?

Not sure how to feel about this.

If they didn't value Pillar at all and essentially got a 4th "for free", I guess the logic checks out. But considering we're accelerating the rebuild of a divisional rival, I'm not sure it's even worth it.

Still analyzing, but this is like the dumbest trade ever for the Wild? I don't see the point.

I think this pick will be used as a sweetener in a Wild trade. We have heard all along that they are having trouble trading guys like Dumba. It’s picks like this that will be added to get a trade done.

What we pay in salaries accrues daily. Since we were under the cap, we have accrued more cap space every day. That means the amount of salary we can add goes up as the season goes on. There are only 27 games left, which is like 33% of the season. So the cap hit for any player really only has a 33% effect on our cap numbers because we weren't paying their salary all season.

Using the pre-trade numbers for the Wild, we had 3.7M in cap space but at the trade deadline there are only maybe 20 games left. So divide 3.7M by 20 games and you get about 185k per game. Multiplied by 82 games and you get approximately 15.7 million in salary we could add at the deadline and still stay under the season long cap. These numbers are now different because we're paying 25% of ROR's salary for the rest of the season.

The Chris Simon trade was dumb.

I don't understand wasting a fifth and a seventh on an overager and then using cap space to recover a failed draft pick.

So we help STL acquire another 2023 first round pick and we get to maybe draft an AHL'er in 2 years for our trouble?

Simple. They weren't going to sign Pillar, so instead of losing him for nothing we get a 4th round pick.

Its a minor move no matter how you shake it. Nothing to get excited about either way. Difficult for me to understand why people are ripping this.

Can Chicago not retain themselves?
They can retain half, making Toews and Kane each $5.25M in cap. If we retain another 50%, that brings each down to $2.625M in cap hit. Much more manageable for contenders to add to their roster. And we should be paid pretty nicely… emphasis on should

Under GMBG MN has now made Divisional trades with:
CHI: MAF
STL x 3: ROR retention, draft day picks, AHLers
COL x 2: Jost, Cole
AZ: McBain
NSH: Kunin

So the whole not trading within the Division is not a consideration for current management. Most of their trades have been with the teams in the West. GMBG seems to have found a couple of other teams/GMs he likes dealing with, similar to Fletcher in his dealings with BUF.
