So we traded a 5th + 7th a couple years ago for a 4th a couple years from now. And Leipold lost some cash. Better make the playoffs now. Can't be having him losing that cash for nothing.

I look at it as Reaves for a 5th this year is better use of draft picks than whatever the Piller thing was. The 4th is just for the retention.

TBH, I had completely forgotten about Pillar.

His name rung a bell because I thought the trade up to draft an overager was odd at the time. I had to look him up, but I forget about a lot prospects that aren't a high pick or in Iowa. This is probably why I don't care when picks are traded for rentals.

Is that even legal?
I just read something today that said that is no longer is. The "Zuccarello rule" from the Dallas trade.

In 2020, the NHL modified their rules. Teams can no longer include a condition in a trade that would send further compensation if a player is re-signed.

Edit: Oh, he didn't have a contract. So maybe this doesn't apply then?

Draft pick for nothing. I approve. BG should have a good idea of the trade market because he's rumored to be involved in trade talks on multiple players. This is ultimately going to have no effect on out ability to buy or sell

Seems like an underpayment in cap space, but 75k in actual dollars for a 4th sounds about right. I’ve seen some models try and put a dollar value on picks, but it’s tough to say how accurate they are when part of the equation has to do with how much budget the owner gives their team, which varies. Either way, it’s not overly inspiring. I’d rather have the 4th than the cap space, and it’s at least encouraging to see Guerin trying to use cap space as an asset, but it feels like this is Billy G wants to give the impression that he’s being productive when he’s really just twiddling his thumbs buying time until the buyouts are done. I know what that looks like, I do it all the time.

So Guerin bought a 4th round pick for $631,000, in an effort to help one of our main adversaries improve.

He’s such a moron.

It wasn’t that much and I don’t really care about the helping St. Louis improve thing. I’m sure they would’ve found another team to get the deal done with.

I have a hard time believing there’s another GM in the league who thinks a 4th is worth $631,000.

$75k in actual dollars would normally be closer to a 6th in the upcoming 2023 draft. Push the pick out till 2025 and it makes sense to increase the pick value one round per year to a 4th round pick.

What exactly are you guys expecting for $74k, $557k in cap, and Josh Pillar? A 2nd round pick?

I don't care about the money or Pillar (though I'm a little confused by including him), I just wanna know what the condition is

His article didn't mention anything about it being conditional. Maybe he misspoke in his tweet?

Retained Salary

When teams trade a player, they can retain, or keep, some of the players' salary and cap hit. The team keeps a % of both the cap hit and salary for the remainder of the contract.
Therefore, if a Player with a Salary of $2.0M and a Cap Hit/AAV of $3.0M is traded with 20% retention, the trading team would continue to pay 20% of the $2.0M Salary and would continue to have a cap hit of 20% of the $3.0M Cap Hit.
The maximum retention % is 50%.
Teams can only carry a maximum of 3 Retained Salaries at a time.
An individual contract can only have a maximum of 2 teams retaining salary on it.
The maximum amount of retained salary by a team is 15% of the Salary Cap for the current year.
If a team retains salary on a traded player and that player is later sent to the minors, there is no change to the cap hit for the retaining team.
If a team retains salary on a trade, they cannot reacquire that player for one year from the date of the transaction, unless the contract ends prior to one year.
