Xenforo Cloud is doing server maintenance Thurdsay 13th at 9 AM GMT. Downtime is to be expected during the process. Server changes were implemented recently to cope with the traffic surge last week. This seems to be affecting the user login, so please anyone experiencing this, log out and clear the browser cache. We expect to have this issue solved once the maintenance is complete.

Hilarious stuff. Overpaying by almost a million and 3 years extra for a 4th liner.
I like what Dubas did this off season. Get more grit but not overpaying it. All though bit surprised he was willing to go to 3 years for Clifford.
This is the covid market and Lou's signing 4th liners for 4-year terms?! That's honestly hilarious.

Not only did he cost us plenty by signing Marleau to the deal he did. It would have been deals like Martin's that really would have sunk the ship. And here we thought that he would have paid players like Nylander and Marner less as the Leafs GM. Had me fooled.
Nylander and Marner contracts are steals compared to the Martin signing.
He probably would have given players like Simmonds, and Thornton much more then Dubas did.

The bigger issue is probably walking Pulock to UFA. RFAs may cave to Lou when they have no leverage but players dont have short memories. If he doesnt get a nice deal during round 2 of negotiations, I dont think he hesitates to walk.

The way Lou acted during an entry-level contract negotiation with Mitch Marner is partially why negotiations with the Marner camp went the way they did, after Lou had even left the organization. (according to Dreger, who was Marner's camp mouthpiece)

Two second round picks isn't particularly cheap for a borderline #4 defenseman who put up 28 points while not being trusted to play in defensive situations.

People bitch about Dubas paying an extra mil to 3 of the top players in the NHL but at least he wasn't signing 4th liners to long deals and borderline D like Zeitsev to 7 year deals...oh forgot about that 3rd year to Marleau that screwed up our draft. Could have had 2 top 15 picks in this year's draft.
Lou lost the plot here in Toronto and you are seeing on the Island. He is squeezing Barzal and giving Martin uneeded term and money. He screwed the Marner 1st deal and created animosity between the Marner camp and the Leafs which Dubas had to fix.

Two wrongs do not make a right. The difference is Lou had plenty of cap space so it did not affect the on ice product. Not the case when you paint yourself into a corner capwise and then have to dump good players and go dumpster diving to fill out the roster. Kinda like what the Jays have done in the past but they behave like a small market team.
Except it did affect the on-ice product. Both in the short-term, because he was wasting money instead of using it on players that could address our weaknesses, during our massive ELC advantage years. And in the long-term, because his contracts extended beyond the period where we would have that available cap space.
Dubas, on the other hand, has been able to remove the bad contracts, maneuver through a global pandemic flat cap, without the stars on ELC advantage, and still consistently address weaknesses year after year to improve the team.
The more Lou does, the more it becomes clear it was good that we moved on when we did.

Two of those guys are playing RD, so that thins out really fast.
Not to mention that none of them are on Rielly's level as a defenseman, even if they all hit their ceilings. We are not giving up a #1 defenseman that is an excellent fit for our team both on and off the ice when we are in the middle of a window. We will pay him into his mid-30's and it likely be less than what Pietrangelo got, especially since it will be an 8 year deal.

While 1 (Brodie) plays the right, he is still left handed, I'm assuming you meant Dermott as the second guy and I don't really think you can say he plays RHD when he's played LHD majority of his career and same with Lehtonen, hence why he's paired with Bogosian who's the RHD.
What I was trying to insinuate was, we have plenty of LHD depth and really lack on the right side. If we could look at possibly trading Rielly to a team who has a young top 4 RHD that is still in the early stages of his career, I think it's something you should look at.

The irony of posters continually ripping on Lou is too funny, yet the Islanders have more playoff success than the Leafs. Imo the Islanders might lack the talent of the Leafs, but they kill it in the heart department. Pageau, Uncle Lou, Martin, Clutterbuck lots of heart and work ethic there, no players mailing it in on Lou’s team.............

I get that Lou is loyal to his depth vets (for better or for worse). But the guy had 8 points last season and is 31.....
He couldn't have signed for 1 mil (or more likely 700k) x 2 years? I can't imagine there would be a bidding war for him at this point.
