While 1 (Brodie) plays the right, he is still left handed, I'm assuming you meant Dermott as the second guy and I don't really think you can say he plays RHD when he's played LHD majority of his career and same with Lehtonen, hence why he's paired with Bogosian who's the RHD.

What I was trying to insinuate was, we have plenty of LHD depth and really lack on the right side. If we could look at possibly trading Rielly to a team who has a young top 4 RHD that is still in the early stages of his career, I think it's something you should look at.

Handiness is irrelevant. It matters what side they've played on. Brodie has played RD for most of his career and continue to play there for likely the rest of his career. He is also 30 and nowhere near #1 level. Lehtonen is a pending UFA who is not going to come close to Rielly, so it doesn't matter what side he plays, but he has played a lot of RD in Europe. Dermott is a pending RFA who is also not close to Rielly as a defenseman either. At best he may be a decent #3 some day, and he may not be around forever.

I know what you are insinuating, and I am saying that we don't really have a lot of LD depth. Not to replace Rielly anyways. Nothing we have comes as close to what Rielly is for us right now, and will be going forward.

And people wanted Lou returned?

Not only did he cost us plenty by signing Marleau to the deal he did. It would have been deals like Martin's that really would have sunk the ship. And here we thought that he would have paid players like Nylander and Marner less as the Leafs GM. Had me fooled.

Nylander and Marner contracts are steals compared to the Martin signing.

He probably would have given players like Simmonds, and Thornton much more then Dubas did.

I think Lou is getting old and soft. Glad we moved on.
This is the same Lou that Shanahan hand picked to mentor Dubas?

Okulov with 34pts in 38GP so far in the KHL. Pretty impressive production, even at age 25. Could see him being a Dubas target if he sells some of the bottom six pieces again next summer (i.e. Kerfoot/Engvall). TOR and MTL were linked before he re-signed.

The irony of posters continually ripping on Lou is too funny, yet the Islanders have more playoff success than the Leafs. Imo the Islanders might lack the talent of the Leafs, but they kill it in the heart department. Pageau, Uncle Lou, Martin, Clutterbuck lots of heart and work ethic there, no players mailing it in on Lou’s team.............

We arent ripping on Martin the player.

Who was Lou competing with to sign him? He is a guy who has proved his loyalty to the organization who only had 8 points last season. In what world is he worth a) 1.5 mil b) 4 year term?

Lou could have done what SJS and Bos did with Thornton and Chara (who ironically enough both left this season) and sign him to 1 year deals at a time to keep some cap flexibility.

Not every player needs to be locked up long term.

It must have been tough for you watching all of those prospects at the World Juniors this year, especially considering they were so skilled and small.

I miss the years of having no prospects there because we had a lot of those tall unskilled players putting up 0.3 ppg in junior. Ah, take me back.

Imagine living in a world where you pretend to be a former season ticket holder so that you can trash a team online. Happy new year!

I think we should see what we have with players like Korsoshov, Barbanov, Micheyev, Vesey, Boyd, Anderson, Engvall, Malgin, Petan and Robertson before we start looking at other players.

We may have some players on that list that can sign fairly cheap and be integral pieces to the Leafs moving forward in the future. If they become good players it puts us in a very good position.

What an odd post. What did you find tough? What are you imagining?

Only issue is how much Rielly wants on his next deal? It's his third deal and probably last chance for a big deal.

Are we talking 50 million? 60 million or 70 million over the full 8 years.

Ideally we get him in for 7 or 7.5 million with him being a 50+ point number 1 defender in this and next year.

I dont know where the cap will come from if he chases big bucks and wants 9ish million. 1.2 million from the kessel retention can go towards him which will be useful.

Rielly is my favourite leaf, love the player and the person(off ice he comes across as a chill and standup dude). My only concern is holding to long to him with no deal in place. I'm hoping dubas can sign him as soon as he becomes eligible for extension. If we dont have a solid extension by 2022 I would consider shopping him to avoid a Pietrangelo/JT situation where an elite asset walks for free.

Very rarely do things work out the way they are conceived. I'm happy we've a chance to participate in the trade deadline sweepstakes with a little bit of cap space in hand. Howvever, does a 13 day quarantine enter into the conversation?

The funny thing Lou mentored Dubas, but Dubas hasn't taken one thing from Lou and for good reason. Dubas is much smarter then to take lessons fron a bad GM.
The Islanders success isn't on Lou. He was gift wrapped Trotz who was coming no matter the GM. The on ice moves have been awful from Lou, and instead of fixing his mistakes, he continues to make the same ones.

Canes shouldn't do that trade. It's not even clear whether Laine will be better than Svechnikov long-term and it would weaken them down the middle and on defense, which are more important than wing. Carolina needs a goalie.

Without Trotz that team doesn't even sniff playoffs. Even with him they were likely missing them last year.

Everything but a goalie there! Laine would be the player of highest impact in that potential trade. However, it would allow WPG to address two areas. Maybe a bit surprised if Carolina would move Pesce though given the contractual uncertainty with Hamilton.
