I have to imagine a deal might come together quickly.

Thornton and Robertson are still weeks away. Simmonds now gone for 6+ weeks.

Issue is, it would have to be a deal with a Canadian team. Maybe we can get a F from the Canucks before they leave town. Motte would be a dream. Virtanen seems rumored to go, but not sure the cost there. Then there is the whole Sam Bennett thing.

I think in the meantime we have to go;

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Vesey - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kerfoot - Mikheyev
Petan - Boyd - Spezza

Maybe you keep Vesey on L3. Maybe they give Barabanov a full show with Tavares and Nylander. I mean, might as well right?

Maybe Petan goes up, bumping Vesey and Engavll down? I would like to see Joey Anderson on that L2. He fits the mold of the Simmonds and Hymans. Could work out well.

If the Leafs are looking for a 3rd/4th line winger with some physicality, I'd be trying to acquire Nicolas Deslauriers from Anaheim.

I know that we're throwing around names like Virtanen and Bennett because it's been reported that they're available and it would make sense for them this season because of quarantine issues.

But with the style of hockey in the playoffs and the depth in the organization having similar type players, a swap of Engvall for Deslauriers might make sense. The Leafs could call up guys that can skate and provide what Engvall does. I don't think they could find another guy like Deslauriers.

The difference between Virtanen/Bennett and Deslauriers is the cap hit and that's important for the Leafs moving forward. You also have another year of Deslauriers at 1mill next season.

Deslauriers is not that great of a player, and likely not even good enough to stick in our lineup full time. It'd be like getting another Clifford without any of the playoff experience or possession ability that made Clifford even remotely valuable. Anaheim also likes him.

I'd rather just continue giving chances to Anderson, Barabanov, or Engvall than giving anything worthwhile for him, at least at this point. We can re-evaluate at the TDL or something.

I don't see that lineup as anything to be worried about, and Robertson and Thornton are likely only a week away... So I can't imagine they miss more than 3 games each at this point. We can survive with Engvall/Barabanov/Anderson/Brooks in the lineup for 3 games.

A month for Thornton would be closer to the end of this month. A month for Robertson would be next weekend. So yeah, Robertson is due back sooner than I thought in my head. A couple weeks for Joe still based on the original timeline.

That said, Robertson has yet to start practicing with the team, even in a non-contact form. Just skating before the practices. So, I am not sure next weekend is realistic still. Might be closer to two weeks too.

The third line has been a problem for us for some time.

Robertson could be back next week per the timeline. Thornton as well.

I don't think the Leafs should trade as a reaction. This is a good opportunity to give the depth guys a shot for a week, maybe two.

With that said, I do think it might create a little more urgency to start talking.

for now:

Hyman-Matthews-Marner
Petan/Anderson-Tavares-Nylander
Vesey-Kerfoot-Mikheyev
Engvall-Spezza-Boyd

Rumour was they were interested in a forward as early as last week and I bet Dubas has already kicked the tires on Bennett (as per Chris Johnson). Question is whether the injuries expedite some kind of trade.

I just don't think the Leafs will want to overpay to get Bennett. It seems like that's what it will take, especially with the requirement that the Flames will need to retain 50%.

Engvall for Bennett at 50% is money in and money out perfectly for us. I don't know if that works for the Flames salary cap. Probably need to add a 2nd round pick at a minimum and a prospect I would assume? Does that even get the Flames interested? Seems unlikely.

I'd like to point out a big part of this team being tougher to play against this year is that Matthews has become a prick to play against with his takeaways, speed and newfound physicality.

Apparently we signed Scott Sabourin and he was just put on waivers sooooo, taxi squad goon?

If Scott Sabourin of all people gets into a game I better never hear anyone say Dubas or Keefe hate toughness again

Lehtonen is looking more and more comfortable as he plays more.

It is quite something that we finally have an established top 4, and then a log-jam for minutes on the bottom pairing.

You can say what you want about the forwards cap management, but Dubas, from the get go, has made building up the defense a priority. Adding Muzzin, Adding Brodie, Drafting Sandin, somehow convincing Lehtonen to sign here despite likely having bigger minute opportunities elsewhere, keeping faith in his guy (Justin Holl).

I applaud Dubas for his faith in Holl. His scouting really is something man, make fun of him all you want for his Soo boys and ECHL faith, but Sandin and Holl are players.

Prior to the season I thought Holl was a #5 at best, and was being carried by Muzzin. I stand very corrected.

The defense is finally good, and the prospects are coming.

Not gonna lie, I don't understand how that helps LTIR space

When you put someone on the LTIR you don't automatically get their full cap value. For example, if you put a 5 AAV player on the LTIR but only use 3 AAV of that space, the other 2 AAV is gone and your new cap limit is the cap ceiling less the 2 AAV. The Leafs want to call up some combination of players that get them as close as possible to utilizing Simmonds' 1.5 AAV without going over 1.5 AAV.

so 750k + 750k kind of thing, thanks!

Figured if we'd give anyone a NHL salary for a few days, it would've been Clune instead of Sabourin.

Sabouron will be given NHL salary but he isn't playing over the other depth forwards.

Clune is pretty much done as a player. He plays occasionally, pretty much as a 15th or 16th forward for the Marlies when we need him rather than having a younger and more valuable player sitting in the press box most of the time, but is more of a coach at this point.

Sabourin is really not that good of a player though. I didn't think he even deserved to be in the Marlies lineup full time, but it's only for one year so it is no big deal I guess.

Neither Clune or Sabourin are going to play.

This is just about getting an NHL contract on a specific amount. Nothing more, nothing less.

So it's just weird they chose Sabourin, over someone like Clune, who has been a great guy with the Marlies in helping the kids down there, and deserves some NHL salary for a few days
