Even with the injuries to Simmons, Thornton and Robertson, the Leafs don't need to make any desperation trade. They have enough forward depth to give other players a shot. Some should relish the opportunity. The Leafs have been ahead of the curve by moving players in and out already, an approach I believe will pay dividends.

That said, I've always believed if a trade is available that improves your team, that you consider it, if not, outright move on it, at any time.

As much as these injuries impact the team, with the number of NHL experienced (even if only a handful of games) players the Leafs have, there isn't a concern in the short term. No legit Cup team should ever be afraid to move decent prospects if the situation arises though. The Cup should be in the sights of this team by any means necessary.

Neither Clune or Sabourin are going to play.

This is just about getting an NHL contract on a specific amount. Nothing more, nothing less.

So it's just weird they chose Sabourin, over someone like Clune, who has been a great guy with the Marlies in helping the kids down there, and deserves some NHL salary for a few days

Or at least they should have signed Rourke Chartier, since he can actually be good enough to take an NHL shift and can play down the middle. Or one of a handful of UFA's who the Marlies will eventually need to fill out their roster once the season starts up (Beau Bennett, Gabriel Bourque, Blake Pietila, etc.).

A contract spot is a contract spot, and they could have used it on a better player who may actually be able to have a legitimate impact on the Leafs this year while also accomplishing what they wanted to accomplish. Sabourin is like 14th on the Marlies depth chart once we fill out our roster.

I actually don't mind Dermott sticking around for the year. He's a 6/7 on this team, but only makes 850K. They have to expose a defenseman for the expansion draft and he can jump right into the top-4 and do well if needed. He's a luxury, but he could come in handy when injuries strike without having to look outside the team for help. He's not helping his trade value, but he is gone at season's end whether through expansion or trade and Sandin takes his place on the main roster.

Giving me hope there's a trade on the way and they're waiting for the pieces to fall into place.

Also curious none of the big hitters in the media are talking about it. Are they waiting for another shoe to drop?

Definitely enough smoke.

Also noticed Dubas was glued to his phone during the last game every time the camera panned to him. While obviously thats nothing concrete, it seemed like his attention was focused elsewhere

With so many new players to work with, I liked this strategy, too. Create some internal competition, find out what works, keep them engaged for when the injuries start to occur and they can 'hit the ground running'.

This was pointed out to me somewhere else, and if their intent is to keep four D at the draft, keeping Dermott makes a lot of sense...unless he's moved for a comparable.

Guys I have been away all day and just came home. What am I missing about a potential trade? How does the Sabourin thing mean a trade might be coming?

Wouldn't be so sure of that. Sabourin was a late cut in camp and they're not burning a contract spot on him with the expectation he plays zero games. Preference will be given to the taxi squad guys who've been practicing with the club, but it'll be a rotation, and with an MTL mini-series coming up, followed by OTT/CGY, there will be heated games. Sabourin might dress on the 4th line for a spell.

I could see management using Robertson's injury as an excuse to give him a short conditioning stint with the Marlies to build confidence after not playing for so long and continue sampling with Anderson/Boyd/Brooks/etc.

Saw this coming in camp, honestly. Sabourin loves playing Canadian teams and this whole situation is an example of why you need tough depth beyond 1 player in Simmonds.

Just a bunch of smoke at this point. Nothing really being rumoured.
I got that. I was just wondering why a Sabourin signing could indicate something.
Plus Dubas being really focused on his phone. I know that's common for every GM but just looking at the scene, something looked to be up.

Seems like you are all caught up then, because that is all people know for certain. Apparently signing Sabourin will allow for the Leafs to maximize LTIR relief on Simmonds (not really sure if that is the case) and that can lead to a move. However we signed Sabourin to a 700k deal and it is not like he is the only guy with a 700k cap hit in the organization... We could have just as easily called up Marincin or Warsofsky. So I think that one is a stretch.

He is calling people, but who knows who he is calling and for what reason.

Seems like some sort of "just in case" kind of signing. Not sure why they would bother one way or another since he's not really NHL quality at all.

Would this not be the perfect time to grab Sam Bennett if there is actual interest??

That's assuming the price makes sense for the Leafs? It's not like the Flames have a ton of cap space to retain either, which is what the Leafs would need for them to do.

Wonder if Dubas works out another deal with the Kings? Seems to be his yearly tradition. Iafallo or Kempe perhaps if he's looking to add some depth?

Interesting Pronger story. Leafs were interested in Pronger and Carlo Colo said they were offering Steen and Kaberlae. Dreger said Lowe wanted not part of a deal with the Leafs because he did not want to turn on the TV and watch Pronger playing for the Leafs every Saturday night. Wonder if Treliving has the same thinking regarding Bennett.

I'd love Kempe, all situations player. PK, centre or wing, speed, size and some jam to his game. The offense hasn't come the way the Kings would have hoped but he would make a real good 3rd liner who can also play a complimentary role in the top 6 for us.
