The long term implication is that the Leafs would trade Dermott and a "significant piece" for a 4th line rental who is not even that great.

It might be a worthwhile gamble for some teams (a team with an excess on the blueline that also has a forward slot available for protection from Seattle). I don't think the Leafs are one of those teams.

Why would we need to add? All Bennett has going for him is his draft position and about a dozen playoff games

As far as I'm concerned he's a reclamation project, there's no way in hell I'd add to Dermott (I'm doubtful he's worth Dermott if I'm being honest)

Calgary having to retain might be the reason. Can't believe it would also take a "significant" piece. If Dubas really likes this guy, I would add a B prospect to get it done if we are going to eventually lose Dermott anyway and Sandin is ready. Perhaps this is why Sandin is in tonight ??

:thumbu: I'm with both you guys on that one Stickty

Pretty sure the price for Bennett is much more than what some of the posters on this board think it is. You are not getting him for Barabanov, Engvall, Anderson, Vesey or such a player and have Calgary retail 50% as well. Going to come down to how much do the Leafs like Bennett.

Anybody have our potential protected list for the expansion draft ???

My current guess is 8 and 1. Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Muzzin, Brodie, Holl and Campbell. They could theoretically re-sign Hyman "now" if they were planning to protect only three defenders (7-3-1). That they haven't yet tells me they could be leaning towards 8-1.

We're going to lose somebody, Dermott might be a decent sacrifice to expansion at this point

He isn't worth more than that, he's a reclamation project and we should price and value him as such imo

Yikes, we would lose a decent player.

  • The upcoming expansion draft will follow the same regulations as in 2017. Each team can protect up to seven forwards, three defensemen, and one goaltender, or nine players regardless of position. All players with no-movement clauses must be protected unless they’ve agreed to waive.
Might be wiser to go 7 and 3 if you pick up Bennett and he flourishes here.

The decision will be made at the end of the year, but I think the Leafs lean more towards Dermott TBH. Unless Dermott shows absolutely no progression this year that is or Holl continues to dominate the entire time.

Rather lose Kerfoot and his cap hit. Wonder if they would risk leaving Brodie/Muzz/Holl exposed instead of Dermott. If COVID prices are still in effect you could save some cap space.

Holl is a top 4 RD making 2M a year that can take tough minutes

I like Dermott but if you lose Holl for him your making the team significantly worse during it's contention window

When a players perceived value is higher than their actual value, that’s when you get taken to the cleaners.

Then you need somebody who can center the 3rd line, that isn't as easy to find as you might think

I'd be willing to expose Muzzin and Brodie since they make decent money and are signed well into there 30's, I wouldn't expose Holl based on age, contract and the ability he's shown the last 2 seasons

Holl (29) is a really nice story but I think I'd rather keep the local kid who still has room to grow, is a great skater and can play both sides of the ice. You could always send Francis another piece to take Kerfoot.

I'd consider overpaying a bit if my GM and coach thought he could turn it around here and if the Habs were sniffing around.

I don't care about the Habs, it's about how we value him not somebody else

He'd need something going for him to make me overpay, good underlying numbers or he showed an ability to help highly skilled top 6 forwards

Something to show he's worth the investment
