I'll chime in... this is what you had Torts.

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Gaborik - Richards - Callahan
Kreider - Miller - Pyatt
Rupp - Boyle - Asham

You couldn't make this work? Really? I was drooling at the beginning of the season, and because of the way he plays the game, almost half this lineup had to be turned over.

Bring in someone who realizes offense is important.

You were drooling over the lineup above at the beginning of the season? Really?? You can't be serious! There isn't that much offensive talent in that lineup when compared to the elite teams in the league pal!

I've said it before, but I honestly wouldn't mind McGuire as an assistant coach. The guy knows hockey, and he has a coaching history.

Ruff isn't a retread. He has only had one coaching job. Buffalo. Babcock has coached more NHL teams than Ruff. He would bring James Patrick with him.

Vigneault. In 2002,Sather was interested in him. Sather was interested in so many coaches that year. Randy Caryle. Dave Tippett was an assistant coach with LA and he got the Dallas job. Hitchcock. Quenneville in 2004. Herb Brooks.

Vigneault was hired in Vancouver by David Nonis. Sather knows Nonis through Brian Burke. Dallas Eakins was hired by Burke and Nonis. There is connection there with Vigneault and Eakins.

Torts was an assistant coach for Schoenfeld in PHX. There was a connection with those two. Schoenfeld played with Ruff in Buffalo. Does Sather go back to a Schoenfeld guy? Again?

Tippett is a good coach. In LA,he was viewed as an offensive guy/PP specialist. Now its the opposite. Ask Kyle Turris.

In all three seasons Tippett was in Los Angeles the Kings qualified for the playoffs. Under Tippett's direction, the Kings’ power play led the entire NHL with a 20.7% success rate. In 2000-01, the power play ranked seventh and in 1999-2000 it finished 10th. The year before Tippett came aboard the Kings, in 1998-99, the Kings power play unit ranked 24th in the league. During the 2000-01 campaign Los Angeles tallied 245 goals which were the most the Kings had recorded since the 1993-94 season

Mike Johnston of the Portland Winterhawks. He interviewed in 2002. He has NHL experience with LA and VAN.

Guy Carbonneau.

but he's an annoying little pest who makes my ears bleed whenever he speaks.

no thanks.

McGuire tends to change his persona depending on what medium he's on. He's actually very listenable on the radio. Not hyper or fangirlish like he is on television. And a hell of a lot of hockey knowledge with that guy, too.

He is knowledgeable, but my gut feelings about him are that he's good as a critic, but that doesn't make him a good coach.

Yeah, its not like Babcock has had no success at the Olympics, or world championships. Also, his three times in the stanley cup finals don't really count much either.

Hey - I'm just saying, you can't expect him to emulate the same Wings system with the Rangers.

He had a peak Paul Kariya and that Ducks team played a defensive shell system, similar to the Rangers. AKA prototypical pre-lockout hockey. This was due to the lack of overall talent on the club.

Look at the shot differentials for the Ducks during Babcock's tenure:

2002-03:
Shots Per game Regular Season: 27.4
Shots Against Per game Regular Season: 29.0

Shots Per game Playoffs: 27.0
Shots Against Per game Playoffs: 33.5

2003-04:
Shots Per game Regular Season: 29.7
Shots Against Per game Regular Season: 29.8

I think the influence of 3 future HHOFers is being undervalued and Babcock got to work with them in their prime years. A monkey could probably coach that team into Presidents Trophies with the way the veterans keep the team closely knit on that roster. Lidstrom, Datsyuk and Zetterberg are perfection.

So you're penalizing a guy for playing "prototypical pre-lockout hockey," pre lockout? If he was doing that post lockout, that would be a problem. Post lockout, with new personnel, and new NHL rules, he changes things drastically to much success, and this is a bad thing? Sounds like a great coach.

The Pierre hate is so ridiculous. Creepiness =/= Lack of hockey knowledge. He is very knowledgeable, unfortunately the internet seems to think creep factor directly correlates with how well you know hockey.

That being said let's not get crazy and start penciling him in as head coach or GM. I would not object to him in a lesser role.

People need to stop with the Pierre bashing. He knows his hockey. To what capacity could he help a team? Not sure, but he is not clueless by any means.

His tendency to repeat himself every 5 seconds could help some of the really dumb players on our team.

McGuire interviewing himself during TV timeouts and coaching from in between the benches as an assistant coach would be entertaining.

When Babcock had an average NHL roster, he ran a defensive system that doesn't rely on possession hockey. Every team wants possession hockey. Every coach wants to emulate it. It's really not easy to do. It's proof that even a supposed savior, Mike Babcock, can't emulate it with any roster. You need the talent.

I don't understand the people who say I coaching change won't make a difference...maybe we are better next year or maybe we are worse as the team adjusts but it was time for Torts to be gone. His defensive zone strategy baffles me..you have the best goalie in the world and certainly a top 5 D corps when healthy...so why collapse? That seems to me like a strategy without much back end skill or a goalie. I thought one of the luxuries of having a great goalie and good skating d besides obviously limiting scoring is that there would be less burden on the offensive players in the D zone. That could allow them to have some semblance of a breakout and transition game which I think will help the goal scoring.

Is there something I don't understand? I love Torts as a person I just didn't think his system made sense.

Realistically, torts system works good for a last place, superstar-less team... like the Florida panthers. the system is designed so that everyone has a very minor role, in that together they can produce a tangible and formidable team effort...

when you have a 7m sniper and 6m top line 30+ year old center, this system no longer works... star players are paid to be just that.. star players.. they hustle down the ice, get into position, score clutch goals, etc etc...

Basically, we finally have some developed roster. We don't need this system anymore.

Some people coach NHL teams....others talk about the people who coach NHL teams. Pierre is good at what does. He should keep doing that.
