If the Rangers hire Barry Melrose than you know just how bad things are. If that happens you really have to question Sather's sanity...not that most on this board don't do that already.

Those people are ones that think tanking is just willy nilly. You don't just tank. wtf. Shaves a year off of everyone. Even important players. Then the gem prospect may take 1-2 years. then what? hank's almost 35/36, Cally/nash are older, etc

Should have tanked properly in 03-04.

I'd rather have Eddie Olcyzk coach the Rangers than Barry Melrose

I would rather have

At least he has BALLS

I don't see how Sather escapes this unscathed after burning through 6 coaches and no cups

He's bullet proof.

So will he be fired or is he bulletproof?

Seriously...Sather is a Jedi. He gets other GM's to bail out is horrid FA moves and then distracts fans and media by firing coaches. He sits up in the sky earning a pretty penny and when he leaves the building goes on a lot of fishi- I mean, scouting trips.

What a joke. Sather is no dummy. He must have ownership wrapped around his finger.

This is a big decision for Sather. Lundqvist is in his prime and they have most of the key pieces to have a very successful team.

This just need the right coach and system(s) to put those pieces together.

And he has another break with 1 more buyout (aka on Brad Richards).

Or not have drafted Jessiman. Not sure if that was 2004. But, New guy has to come in and intend on making goals happen.

Huge Specimen was in 2003.

No tanking. I want someone who has coaching experience. Doesn't have to be in the NHL. But no to 94 sweethearts like Messier and Graves. I'd give up on this team.

I'm gonna miss Tort's. Not gonna lie. He's forgotten more about hockey than most here will ever know. He helped this team forge a solid Identity. Something that has been a huge problem for this franchise thru much of it's past.

And he was one top notch coach that was willing to come to New York and take on that challenge.

Look at the list of people who will not touch the Rangers head coaching job. It will be telling I think.
Nobody is saying he is a bad coach BUT his system doesnt get you to the finals anymore. Defense is important but you cant just concentrate on defense and not allow your offensive players(nash kreider hagelin) to have more freedom

All of that's true, but he's still an asshat, lost the room, and couldn't motivate or get wins out of a stacked lineup.

.....several of whom absolutely did not show up. Either in the regular season or in the playoffs. Now ultimately that's on the coach. I'll give Tort's credit, he said as much.

But when you have a line up that's minus..

Richards
Nash
Staal
Gaborik

...For significant portions of the season and post season....well we can all do the math here.

My position is that before too long we will all miss this guy. Hope I'm wrong and have to eat crow. We'll see.

That makes two of us.

More than anything, this. For all his flaws, you knew the team was gonna come to the rink and bust their rears. Was actually going to be watchable without your blood pressure going through the roof.

That was, until good stretches of this year. Which is why I think the "lost the room" argument holds water. Saw a good bit of nights off this year.

So for as much as I was a fan of a lot of what Torts did, I get how management could feel it had run its course. Personally I also put a lot of that on the players preparedness and character this season. But clearly there were issues.

I'll chime in... this is what you had Torts.

Hagelin - Stepan - Nash
Gaborik - Richards - Callahan
Kreider - Miller - Pyatt
Rupp - Boyle - Asham

You couldn't make this work? Really? I was drooling at the beginning of the season, and because of the way he plays the game, almost half this lineup had to be turned over.

Bring in someone who realizes offense is important.

Do you really think Hagelin is a first line winger? Maybe a second liner? I look at those forwards and I see a very soft team. At least the pre-Nash team had a few guys (Prust, Dubinsky, etc.) that were complete *******s to play against.

Tort's hasn't made a comment yet right? I'd be interested in hearing what he has to say considering he was "shocked" and was reportedly extended during the season.

I know this is a tort's is fired thread but since the other sather and torts thread was closed I will just say this about glen. The man may just be a genius, in what other sport, team, organization does a GM have over a decade and 6+ coaches and an unlimited budget to figure it out and not even come close all of one or two years? Whatever BS he is selling Dolan I wish I could hear some of it, because he has the Rangers ownership eating out of his hand.

wow....big news. Didn't expect to see something like this so soon.

Just one note of caution guys. Lundqvist is a very good goalie, but he has some serious mental flaws in his game. They will be exposed badly in an open offensive system. He is very hard on himself and when a goal is scored on him (and gets a bit too high when the Rangers score), it's very likely he'll let more goals in the next 2-3 minutes of play...which is why Torts used the 4th shutdown line so often right after goals (for and against). For people who don't see it - look at game film and check out Henrik's body language. It's very apparent.

If a new coach doesn't see this and prepare for it, things will get very nasty in New York...especially if Henrik gets that mega contract rumored a few days ago (10 mil, 8 years).

Vigneault will be a good option. Similar to Torts, but a little more open minded to bring more offensive play, and not as abrasive as Torts.

But man, oh man, need 2 assistants behind the bench. Sullivan is clueless about the offensive side of the game.

I'll miss Torts as a person, I won't miss Torts as a coach. He was amazing at pressers, he will always be.

However, we need a coach who focuses more on attack. You cannot win the Cup with just offense (Vancouver is a perfect example) but neither with just defense, which is what the Rangers showed.

We have the defensive end covered, we need to play a more creative style of hockey up front, with a bit more depth. We don't need a coach who puts guys like Bickel on the wing.

Who our new coach will be, I don't know. I don't really care. I just hope it's a coach with an open mind.

I'm not worried about Hank's mental game. I'm worried about our **** offense.

Maybe cause he knows this team has trouble scoring goals more often than not? Sometimes even allowing 1 goal could feel like death with this "offensive system."

Hank would have no issue with a more open offensive system, you can bet that.
