Siegel is lost in the weeds. He's running himself in circles trying to justify his opinion that they're worse off now then last year. It's also very disingenuous to compare the roster now to the one that played in the playoffs.

Picking Alex Kerfoot as the hill to die on sure is a strange hill to die on.
Jonas is right. The team is worse. And he's right they've lost role players and replaced them with other role players that didnt fill the same holes.

Jonas is an example of lies, damn lies and statistics

He's not wrong on some specifics but he's just so very wrong as a whole

The team is worse mostly because Samsonov has been completely awful, Matthews has been awful, Marner has been inconsistent. Injuries on the D, and regression of Brodie have not helped either. Losing turds like Kerfoot are not the reason

I've enjoyed the Mirtle/Siegel types over the years cause they were refreshing from the Simmons and Feschuks of the world. Just trying to stir up shit with TMZ coverage. And just spouting opinions without proper analysis. I felt the Mirtle/Siegel types brought/bring in good analysis, even if sometimes they dive too deep into something that isn't really there.

The issue is Siegel of late has gone too deep/far that way and it's getting ridiculous. I think Mirtle does a good job of reeling him in if he goes off a bit.

What we need is a happy medium. Not a deep dive of charts as to why the 14th forward may be a gem, but also not constant doom and gloom because someone eats hot dogs or enjoys watching the Kardashians.
This is a very good explanation.

I would say that Mike Johnson is the best media person around right now.

This is fair. But you can also tell they miss guys like Kerfoot and Holl on the PK

Yeah, completely agree. Losing Bunting, Kerfoot and Holl and replacing them with Bertuzzi, Domi and Klingberg is far less a factor than the reasons you outlined. The lipstick on the pig isn't necessarily what's making the core of it look ugly right now.

Comparing a playoff roster to fall roster is unfair.

And that said, Dubas' teams still didn't make it out of 2nd round. The role players don't make this team, the stars do, and it will go so far as the stars take them.

Frankie Corrado and Mark Roes segment on tsn asking if crosby is better than ever at age 36 because he's on pace to get 52 goals (1 better than career high) after the first 20 games was incredibly stupid. He's still very good but clearly well past his prime. Prime Crosby in today's nhl would be putting up 130+.

The roster at the start of last season made more sense than the roster the Leafs started with this year.

Forwards
Michael Bunting - Auston Matthews - Mitch Marner
William Nylander - John Tavares - Denis Malgin
Pierre Engvall - Alex Kerfoot - Calle Järnkrok
Zach Aston-Reese - David Kämpf - Nicolas Aubé-Kubel

Defenders
Morgan Rielly - TJ Brodie
Jake Muzzin - Justin Holl
Mark Giordano - Rasmus Sandin

Goalies
Matt Murray
Ilya Samsonov

Seriously? Malgin in your top 6?

We started the year with Klingberg in the top 4 and your problem is Malgin?

People thought the roster was at its best post trade deadline. What happened? They didn't play all that great vs Tampa despite the win and we all know how the second round went.

The inconsistent play dates back to the start of last year's playoffs with the "better" roster.

Not enough time to build a team. A lot of times a team sign a big name FA and they don’t see immediate success.

When you go into a season or playoff and you don’t have too many unanswered questions or you’re expecting players to do things they haven’t proven they can do, then you’ll know they have a chance.

Again, Jonas' points skew a bit far and can be ridiculous, but he is right on the no utility thing. That can't be denied. We lost a lot of vanilla players but the thing that gave them their one note was utility. There are a bunch of reasons the team has been so-so this year and one of the biggest ones is the lack of utility.

The team started with more utility at the start of last season than there is this season. Dubas still went out an got more at the deadline. Now it is almost non-existent and I don't know how you can succeed without it.

we have about the same record we did last year so far and the teams problem isn't we lost meh players like Kerfoot/Holl

the problem is we've had injuries to our D , Brodie/Gio keep regressing due to age which is to be expected , McCabe was a waste of the assets Dubas gave up for him as well as Tre missing on the Berg signing

but the good news is we can still add by the deadline so lets hope Tre moves any picks Dubas left behind (which isn't many) to make a run for the 2nd round and we can all rejoice at the great job our GM did

Care to explain how? Because I don't see it. I don't think there's a significant difference really.

I would concede last years fall roster had more cohesion than this year because Bunting, Engvall, Kerfoot and Holl were all returning players filling mid lineup roles. When you turn over the roster for the playoff run (we also had chemistry issues down the stretch and looked lost for much of the Florida series) and then turn over again in October you might have cohesion issues.

Klingberg in the top 4.

Giving Kampf 2.4 mill to play with Reaves, so now the 4th line cant be a matchup line. Then also trading lafferty to keep Reaves, so even if you drop Reaves from the line for certain shifts, you've already compounded a mistake.

Domi on the third line, so that line cant be a match up line either because he's a mess defensively.

2nd line with Bertuzzi, JT, Nylander also cant really be relied upon to handle tough matchups

The roster going into the season was so far from a playoff lineup its not even funny.

I posted the lineup, your point is a weak one. Lmao's aside.
Nah. I just didnt hate dubas enough to act like Treliving had a good offseason

Neither one of them covered themselves in glory, the only thing we don't know is what this team looks like post deadline under Tre

Lots of the additions have worked just fine if you put them in the context of their place in the roster. Dubas swung and missed a lot at those positions, every GM does, and Siegel is conviently forgetting that.

But it's all window dressing. The core still defines this team and it's the same as it was before. The rest is window dressing. This team will make the playoffs and Alex Kerfoot and Justin Holl vs Max Domi and Simon Benoit or whatever isn't going to be what takes us to a Cup.
Are you sure about that? Reaves Klingberg and Domi are nearly $9m that could’ve been used in much better ways to bolster the line up. Heck, add kampf’s $2.5m to the tally of poorly spent funds.
Firing a productive, useful and cheaper player who fills a utility like Lafferty into the sun to keep a plug like Reaves is just a prime example of what Jonas (and many others capable of seeing the big picture) are pointing out.

There’s too many guys who don’t do the things this team needs them to do at a high enough level. There’s a group here who always bellyached that previous iterations of the team were lacking in certain qualities and while that might be true, there wasn’t a lot of lacking in utility and usefulness. Also the previous regime was pretty quick to paper over a mistake at a minimal loss, which is probably why a lot of us were all expecting/hoping Reaves to be buried by now but alas he still exists on this roster for whatever reason.

Dubas - nerdy twerp
Jonas - nerdy twerp
Mirtle - nerdy twerp

Mystery solved. The only mystery that remains is who are Jonas and Mirtle on this site. To the Mystery Machine….
Dubas- successful sports manager
Jonas- successful columnist and podcaster
Mirtle- highly successful news editor
How about you?

Not enough time? He was hired before any of the major transactional dates. Sitting on one’s hands isn’t the same as not having the time to execute.

Keefe spoke to this again today, that it’s just now starting to feel comfortable with all the adds. I don’t know why we can acknowledge this reality.
