Toronto Maple Leafs: Who Would Replace Kyle Dubas?

excuse of the day , tomorrow you'll have another one . lol

-the cap didn't rise for anyone
-but i do agree had Dubas signed the 11m crew to fair deals the team would be in much better shape

the main problem he has is grossly overpaid an ufa loser which created all his problems

the bright side if the team loses again is i won't have you and the other Dubas fan club members on the Leafs board anymore
What moves would you have done or do?

Be specific. Be constructive. Don’t tell us what you wouldn’t do.

I read an article that put a bit of a shadow on Knies. Not saying Knies ain't good; but they said he is significantly benefiting from the guys guys he is playing with. Kinda like Dvorak did with Marner and Tkachuk.

here is hoping that article is wrong
Yet he was a ppg player in the NCAA last year without Cooley and Snuggerud while finishing 2nd on his team in scoring. I haven't watched Minnesota play this year but from what I saw in the summer with Knies and Cooley playing together was Cooley is a puck hog and was killing that line's offense. From the highlights that are constantly being posted in the Marlies thread, Knies appears to create his own offense with his shot and power game.

He also had 2 pts in 4 games at the Olympics.

ironic statement there.

answer me honestly. do you really want the team to win with Dubas in charge?

we both know the real answer.
Every fan wants the team to win !

You unfortunately believe Dubas and the team is the same entity .

Not being a fan of Dubas is no different than not being a fan of say Holl and wanting him replaced . The sad part is you can’t see that .

Firing Dubas for the sake of it would be monumentally stupid. Context is important (covid, flat cap, etc.), and he’s put together one of the most talented rosters the franchise has ever had.

Unless you have someone that you can be 100% confident is nailed-on better than Dubas, you’d be an idiot to just replace him.

This is a very broad, very important discussion/decision that has to be made.

Have to disagree with you . He inherited one of the most talented rosters.

First of all he wouldn’t be fired “ for the sake of it”, he would be fired based on results. This is a results oriented business. We all understand the context, yes we would have beat the Habs if Tavares didn’t get injured, Columbus was the wierd Covid bubble and Korpisalo really stepped up for them. Yes the ref’s f***ed us against Tampa, every series went the distance, the flat cap ect. All of that is true and with some better luck we would have won a playoff series and that’s why he didnt get fired last offseason but eventually he has to just find a way to win a god damn playoff series despite whatever excuses come his way. Time is up, either we win a damn series or he and Keefe are gone.

Well said . A rookie president who hired a rookie GM who then hired a rookie coach. This is the last dance with this MGT group.

You wish! If he gets fired, Dubas is God/Satan arguments will go on for years.
Nah, there was an infamous poll about 2 weeks before Burke was fired asking if leaf fans wanted his contract extended. It was over 80% here that voted "yes".

Most of the Burkites pretended most of what they said about him the past few years just didn't happen. They immediately "approved" of the firing and could now magically acknowledge his mistakes.

There was a small minority of Burkites that fought on a few weeks still claiming he was a genius who shouldn't have been fired... but not too much longer.

Within a couple months the entirety of this leaf board was in agreement that he was a horrendous gm. 80% of whom "wanted him re-singed" weeks before his firing. It's the stranger than fiction type of stuff that you just can't make up.

With Dubas, this board is very divided on him. Nowhere near 80% approval rating. If the leafs lose in the first round again and he's fired, he will IMMEDIATELY go down as one of the biggest mistakes in maple leaf history (given all the assets he had when he started).

All I know is that when it comes to his replacement, I want someone experienced. I'm over rookie Presidents, GM's, and coaches.

I mean he didn't really put together the talented foundation of the franchise, that was given to him when he took the job

His duties were to re-sign the kids to reasonable deals + surround them with good talent. I don't think he has done a great job of that, particularly how he has addressed the forward depth. He deserves a lot of credit for re-tooling the defensive core, though

Also, the flat cap sucks but we bear some responsibility for being so impacted by it. We were signing guys to big deals when their comparables in the league were either cheaper or had more term. Marner got 10.9 and Mikko got 9.25 a few weeks later. Matthews got 11.634 at 5 years while Eichel got 10x8 and McDavid 12.5x8

Wonder how different the landscape would be had the Leafs never purchased the Raptors and formed MLSE?

They did just win with the Raptors, but at the same time I think that Masai had full control.

I don't think that's a problem. It could be as simple as having too many voices on the hockey side? I am pretty curious as well. If I am not mistaken, with revenue sharing it's more beneficial to the Leafs to have higher operational costs so that the League does not dip as much.

Ultimately I wish I knew and that the team would just start a winning series or two and a cup. I am getting up there in age now and I'd really like to see it happen this decade.

This is what I don’t get though. Dubas really have not done anything at the NHL level or any pro Hockey level before his Leafs career to have such a diehard fan base. And not like he had done anything spectacular as Leafs AGM and GM to warrant a followings either.

It is so weird, as if a lot of guys just want to support Dubas to piss off Leafsnation.

I don't know about that but one thing is for certain Dubas is the only GM in the league with a heckuva lot of AGMs. I can't find anothe rteam with so many AGMs
I think they have 5 GMs. A teams have 4- Tampa and Chicago for example. Most teams have 3.

Most of that is made up. I don't think Dubas has a fan base at all. It is the Leafs that do. The fans that support Dubas as GM are part of Leafsnation.

It has to have something to do with analytics and not playing the game. It's like if he can, we all can. Kind of thing.

IF they lose in the first round again (I believe they'll beat Tampa this year), I wouldn't be opposed at going all in on Coach Trotz in the dual role of GM/Coach

I have my theories on why he has the fanbase he does but that's not a discussion fit for this thread or board.

When he signed Reilly to that 8 year boat anchor he sealed his own fate. That and the Tavares contract means they can’t build a deep enough team to go deep in the playoffs or even win a round in the Atlantic. His lack of experience and arrogance in continuing to run it back has shown he’s not up to the job. Bring in Trotz and let him rebuild the team into a cup contender. Shanny should be shown the door too.
