"Good teams are built from the goalie out".

Goaltending will be a key to the series and pointing out that Vasilevskiy is one of the best in the world and that Sammy will need to beat and be better than in 4 of the 7 games for Leafs to advance, isn't an anti Leaf sentiment its stating the obvious. Doesn't mean Sammy can't do it, but he will need to outperform Vas for Leafs to win games.

The goalie that gives up the less goals against in a game wins it for his team and that seems like basic common knowledge.
Goaltending will only determine the series if our top 2 lines can't win their matchups and our PP sucks IMO. I expect them to be a big problem for Tampa's weakened D.

"Good teams are built from the goalie out" you know other then the defending champs right?

Last year they had about as great a game one as you could ask for then went on to lose, so keeping that mind nothing will be decided tonight.

If they can bring as much energy in games 2,3,4 and beyond (if necessary) as they do tonight, they should take this. Big "if" with this group but ROR may just be that voice this team has needed on the bench and in the locker room that keeps this group focused and committed to a complete series effort.

Round One, Game One. Your Toronto Maple Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tonight, for the second year in a row, the virtuous and honourable Maple Leafs begin a series against the dirty and disgraceful Lightning in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. While Cooper and Stamkos are busy complaining to the media about officiating, the Leafs are focused on the task at hand as they prepare to win the first playoff series since 2004.

30 years ago the Maple Leafs went on an unexpected and deep run that fell short thanks in no small part to shoddy officiating (the more things change eh). Those playoffs were the beginning of a run that saw the Leafs reach 4 Conference Finals in 12 years, have the fourth most playoff wins among NHL teams, and have the fifth most series wins among NHL teams. This current Leafs team is without a doubt the most talented and balanced in the Matthews era, and many of their players can draw parallels to former Leafs who were key in many deep runs. If these Leafs want to notch some series wins under their belts (preferably fouor) it won't hurt to draw upon the success and legacy of Leafs teams past.

(These aren't perfect comparisons, as Matthews really has no peer in Leafs history but Sundin is the closest, and Clark has no comparable on the current Leafs)

Near perfect post - I would have used Dave Andreychuk as a better doppleganger for Tavares; but I get why you chose Nieuwendyk as well.

Getting started on the right foot, nicely done sir!

Leaf shooters have to be better than Tampa shooters.
All Samsonov can only control how he plays, he can't control how Vasilevsky plays, the shooters control that.

This could be the most e.l.i.t.e. night of my life, but I'm also preparing a k.e.e.f.e. post game reaction.

Super psyched for this game and playoff hockey in general...

But I still hate this matchup. I hate it so much. It's not an excuse, as I'm POSITIVE Columbus and Montreal hated their matchup with the leafs but they both still won. Their core forwards put up identical points for WAY lower aav's. And one of the best goalies in the world famous for being amazing in the playoffs. I just hate the matchup.

But hopefully we pull through. I think we're just f***ing due for some good luck.

1 vs 8 we get NYR. I'm happy getting Tampa instead.
