Funny timing with this thread for me. I am currently working on putting together my teams of the decade from Germany.
But so far I have only finished my team for the 70s and am half way through the 80s.
I haven't really seen any of hockey in the 70s, but there is enough information available so I gave it a shot.
The 80s are the first decade where I have actually watched some hockey and it is fun to come across so many names I had forgotten about, but were some of my favourites at the time.
Maybe, once I have finished at made it all the way to today, I will try to create my all-time team. However, there will definitely be an asterisk to it, not only because I won't consider players from before the 70s (maybe I'll include the 60s, but it's doubtful), but also because I will not consider any GDR players.
But I really like
@Eye of Ra 's team, even if I would most likely change a few minor positions. I also pretty much agree with the comments from
@Sanderson and
@PanniniClaus . Those are some good points and Höfner could certainly merit to be included. But it always depends where you put your emphasis on. Which tournaments do you value more than others, is NHL success more important that play for the national team? Is peak performance more important than longevity?
I will probably end up making two teams. One team, with who I believe to be the best German players of all time, and one team with the most significant players for the national team. Some of the NHL guys who have had few appearances with the national team, might not make the latter one, while some guys who played almost every year of their career at the World Championships and in every Olympics might make that one even if they were not on the same level as the NHL guys.
