Just checked in and WOW - a thread about how the Leafs need to stop being victims (LOL). How they're hated around the League. So in response to that players should start snow showering goalies, overly celebrate every goal, chop sticks out of hands, dive, and, I quote, other douchy moves.

What an insufferable, fragile fanbase.

Auston Matthews is already leading by example and has been for a while.

Which frankly, seems disrespectful to me and thus worthy of a direct violent response, which is fine according to the code.

Their entire fanbase will lose it too if anyone responds even in kind (note, Reilly's response was not in kind).

I'm laughing that all of this was over an empty net goal. Jesus christ.

The CODE; Reminds me of the 87 pre game brawl when the Habs shot the puck into the Flyers net at the end of warm up.

No Cross checks to the head though.

Which is more disrespectful? I personally absolutely loved Greig's slap shot empty netter and his shit eating grin after he did it.

Don't use your stick as a weapon kids... no matter how tempting that may be.

I wonder where the code is on coming out of the room with no jersey and trying to fight someone with a jersey?

I saw a tweet of Andrew Raycroft of all people saying that Greig's move was warranting retaliation.

Literally all these former players chiming in are complete nobodies or back up goalies, lmao
He isn't wrong. But grab Ridly, drag him to the ground or whatever. Crosscheck him mid body. Hell, drop the gloves. But that was way way over the top, and gutless. And very dangerous

Exactly. My first thought was he could have a broken jaw or concussion. There was a lot of force behind that crosscheck to the head. The talking heads and cement heads are not addressing this, which is the main problem with the "response".

TSN articles are now just saying "Rielly took exception to it and levelled him into the boards, causing a melee to erupt."

My only issue with Griegs EN goal was him not being ready to engage. Have to know someone was coming. Would have liked to see him with his stick up or gloves ready to drop.

i think he knew it was coming but just wanted to play innocent like the little shit he is. "who what me?? what did i do??!" lol

i don't think he expected a cross check to the head though just a scrum, but leafs gonna leaf.

I agree. I was a little surprised.

I also agree with this. I feel like he was playing it up. He's lucky to escape injury though. In the end it kind of worked out perfectly. Losing Rielly for 5+ games could torpedo the Leafs season and I love it.

I don't know how many of you remember the Sens Caps 1998 playoff game, and Calle Johansson did something stupid with the empty net, and I wanted him decapitated. I think Alfie gave him a little crosscheck, and then MacEachern, and there was a bit of commotion.

That my read on it as well. No one should expect a crosscheck to the head after that, but does anyone doubt he knew exactly what he was doing?

Over There
"Outfitted with a seemingly bottomless gas tank, Greig's energy impacts all three zones. If there's a scrum, he's involved: if there isn't, he creates one. Although average in stature, few players in the draft bring a more refined physical game and all-out destruction. He's an intelligent defensive player, he attacks with pace offensively, and has a deft passing ability." -EliteProspects 2020 NHL Draft Guide

One of the pre-draft write ups on Greig. Absolutely love the bold.

I think this is the opinion of most reasonable fans.

Elliott Freidman on 32 Thoughts today said the online opinions were mostly just along tribal lines, that Sens fans would defend the cross-check if Brady had done if after someone like Kneiss were to have pulled a Grieg. That after he says Rielly's cross-check rode up on Greig's arm and that should soften the punishment as compared to Perron's. Seems like he's really lobbying for this not to impact the Leafs' playoff chances.

He knew, yeah. I think we've all done things like that in life where you know you're gonna get a reaction and you pretty much look the other way to say, what?, but he knew. He probably hoped for that exact reaction to be honest, it means he did his job, a guy is getting suspended and he didn't have to actually drop the mitts (not that he cares, but if you don't have to, why bother)?

This is almost certainly the lesson he'll take away from this.

Can't trust anyone from that organization to engage in civil discourse.

I'd be so upset as a Leafs fan.

1) I'm a Leafs fan
2) my team is going nowhere - legit, there's no chance. No defence, no real goalie, nothing gonna happen
3) I'm a Leafs fan
4) such an easily rattled team and soft as baby shit*

*unfortunately Ottawa is too

I think he gets 8. Perron got 6 in a similar situation, but his captain was laying on the ice, so even if it was wrong, it was understandable that he was trying to defend his captain.

Rielly was defending what, the netting and his honour for giving up on the back check?
No none of that.. What Riely did was bush league. I do not think its was cool My comment was just referring to that is may unite or polarize the leafs team. If I'm a leafs fan I may like it as a come together moment - not agreat one

I was at the Rangers game (unfortunately), but Chabot tried to shoot the puck into the Rangers net at the end of warmup (missed) but he was the last one on the ice

.. isn't the league stance that you are responsible for your stick? "rode up" like it was a magical force. And garbage like "if it was Brady", sorry I would not be behind it. And to be fair, lots of Leaf fans are expecting and are ok with him missing some games - they know it was over over the line.

Back to this "rode up", that is garbage. I took a screen grab of the intial contact, and the right hand is right at Grieg's head, any shoulder is from Grieg twisting to minimize the hit. Absolutely aimed at the head.

Ah toughness by hitting someone in the face with a stick

And it wasn't even a member of the corpse four who did it
I think they figure the corpse four will each grow a pair by osmosis. It's fandom, so it doesn't have to make sense, I guess.

"in my defence, I was just kind of standing around looking like a tool, so after he slammed it home, I figured I had to do something. Fortunately, he circled back towards me, so I didn't have to skate right to the net"

Brady can just beat the guy up, he doesnt need to skate up behind a guy and punch him in the side of the head

Is there no main boards thread on Reilly being a dickhead? I looked and don't see one, although that night I had had many a king can and may have accidentally ignored it.
