I thought this Greig thing was awesome, for both teams.
For Ottawa it was such a screw you to all the leafs fans who invade the building. It was a here suck on this exclamation point. Plus the kid played a great game
For Toronto, and I can say this because Greig didn't get injured, because if he had it'd be different and I am not pretending it wouldn't have been, but for Morgan Riley to respond that strongly shows some emotion the leafs have been lacking. Riley is pissed and he should be. The leafs played poorly.
Riley is not a dirty player. Greig is a good player who is a pest and he got it done tonight.
Prediction: Riley gets three games

Some Leafs fans are saying this is a turning point for the "Corpse Four" because it will make them all tough 'n stuff for the playoffs.

I remain unconvinced.
Ah toughness by hitting someone in the face with a stick

And it wasn't even a member of the corpse four who did it

I saw a tweet of Andrew Raycroft of all people saying that Greig's move was warranting retaliation.

Literally all these former players chiming in are complete nobodies or back up goalies, lmao

I think he gets 8. Perron got 6 in a similar situation, but his captain was laying on the ice, so even if it was wrong, it was understandable that he was trying to defend his captain.

Rielly was defending what, the netting and his honour for giving up on the back check?

According to Leaf fans we won our Stanley Cup last night, boy its nice to win 3+ Stanley cups every single season wow.

Don't forget our Hab and Wing stomping victories. I'm running out of fingers for all these rings.

Elliott Friedman is basically defending Rielly this morning on 32 thoughts

I thought it was pretty disgusting. He seems to have no comprehension of how running a guy down and cross checking him in the head could be wrong.

Then he also said Keefes approval was fine because he was standing up for his player. Real moron shit from Elliott today.

Which reminds me, I felt incredibly disrespected by that "no soul" remark he made years back. Guess we should all follow the code and respond.

It absolutely warranted retaliation, or an answer, from the Leafs.

That retaliation isn't a cross check to the beak, Reilly is going to get his well deserved long suspension for the idiotic play.

Grieg knew what he was doing, he knew that was going to ruffle their feathers, that's exactly why he did it. Good on him.

A dust up or scrum was happening without a shadow of a doubt, anyone doing that knows there will be an answer. A crosscheck to the face isn't what one should expect, or happen, but Grieg, without a doubt, was expecting a ruckus.

If we were on the receiving end of a play like that I'd want there to be an answer from our guys, a big dust up and a few dances. Obviously a crosscheck to the head is idiotic, beyond idiotic, but there was always going to be an immediate answer from that; Reilly just choose an extremely dumb way.

There is no chance there isn't going to be an immediate answer from that play by Grieg, regardless of who is playing.

It's hockey, that kind of play is always going to have repercussions

He's Sportsnet/HNIC so not really a big surprise unfortunately

I've seen takes on social media stating that Brady would have done the same.

No, Brady would have dropped the gloves and not raced down the tunnel before all his teammates had a chance to get in the scrum.

The TO media is really ignoring how fast Rielly ran away. Cross check to the face and then fleeing as fast as possible really shows how tough the Leafs are.

Expect no less from anyone associated with Sportsnet. At least TSN occasionally has a hint of objectivity since they have the Sens regional rights.
Tbf him and Jeff are normally pretty neutral. I was surprised by their extra lack of “common sense” this morning.

All they focused on was how it shouldnt be more than a 1-3 game suspension because apparently rielly clipped griegs shoulder before his head. Nothing re: context like how leafs were frustrated by grieg getting under their skin whole game, how i was after a good goal, nor about how there was only 5 seconds left. It was a shockingly biased take for them.

If tkachuk did this to Knies, the context shouldnt change at all. They tried to say that sens fan in this scenario would love it. Couldnt be further from the truth.

Reckless. Stupid. Unnecessary. Dangerous. Soft.

It was very embarrassing by Reilly, I have no debate about that.

But the play, without a shadow of a doubt, deserves an answer and retaliation.

Grieg knew this, every player on the ice knows this.

The retaliation that happened was embarrassing, but there was always going to be one, as there should have been.

All the players, like Methot, saying it warranted a retaliation are right. The retaliation that happened was ridiculous and warrants the long suspension he will receive, but a retaliation is happening 100% of the time there.

Quick check of the Leaf board.

Apparently Rielly was aiming for Greigs arm, which makes it ok, and also Greig should be suspended for being mean.

I swear I hear circus music in my head every time I visit.

Spot on.

Greig is a pest, his role is pissing off the opposition, getting under their skin and he did it, he knew full well what he was doing and the reaction he should have gotten. He's going to keep doing stuff like this, and be the player every other fan base hates,

What annoys me isn't people upset with what he did, that was the point after all, to get under people's skin, but the hyperbole of some to make a pest move a bigger deal than it was, and the insanity of people trying to defend Reilly for crossing the line, suggesting the impending suspension is too much,

It was a dick move by Greig and I loved it, you want rivalries this is how you build them. What Reilly did has no place in the game, ever.

Listening to it now..... ugh.

I'm not sure what I expected from SportsLeafsNet, but they hit a new low for me today.

Whether it's defending the crosscheck, more BS about the code, to making excuses for Keefe, just bad take after bad take.

At least Marek had the stones to say - it's only an issue when your bull gets gored, and that Keefe was defending a suspension play. No shit, Marek, thanks for doing the bare minimum.

"What was Keefe supposed to say? He'd lose the room!" - f*** off Elliot.

Greig clearly knew what he was doing. Yeah, he would have been expecting a response. He should in no way expect a crosscheck to the face. What would the narrative be if Greig was on the boards with his hands up defending his face when Reilly came at him? That he turtles at the first sign of trouble? Yeah... that's not Greig. He'll take what he gives and have a smile while you lose your mind and get a suspension.

I hope the Sens come out of this galvanized as a Team that no one in the sports media world has their side. f*** them all. Prove everybody wrong.

Whatever. Yeah, I'd probably be a little bit pissed if that happened but he didn't show up an individual player. He didn't do anything dangerous. He put an exclamation point on a victory.

I'd have his number next game and I'd let him know it, but this is no different than Hunter on Turgeon back in the 90s. It's a player being a f***ing baby about losing and not being able to control his emotions. Unprofessional bullshit that deserves 8 games as as minimum.

Can you imagine NFL players attacking a player who does a flip into the end zone? I can't either because the league wouldn't allow it. Greig made a legal play, during the course of play, to score a goal. He did nothing after the whistle had gone. NHL players, past and present need to grow a thicker skin and stop being a bunch of toddlers. You don't like something, a legal something, a player did during the course of play? Respond in kind by getting retribution during play. Legally. If not the hammer should drop on the player without qualifying "why he had to do it".

P.S. This is directed at the talking heads, not you specifically.

Just checked in and WOW - a thread about how the Leafs need to stop being victims (LOL). How they're hated around the League. So in response to that players should start snow showering goalies, overly celebrate every goal, chop sticks out of hands, dive, and, I quote, other douchy moves.

What an insufferable, fragile fanbase.
