Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

Call the Leafs 5th string goalie up.
They can't.

Their 5th-string goalie was loaned to a team in Sweden.

They can't sign another goalie as they have no wiggle room.

They have used the full 50-player limit (a discussion that we previously had you and I).

They could obviously trade a player for a goalie, but any sensible GM would know they have Dubas over a barrel and get extra value for that goalie.

Fire Kyle Dubas and Sheldon Keefe and for once hire the right people for these jobs. Not the flashy, or the most expensive, or the most into analytics, but the best person.

They don't have to be a "big name" or "understand the Toronto market" or any of that garbage. Their are a handful of up-and-coming types that fit both roles.

I don't even think that's true anymore. They have 4 good forwards, a roving idiot as a #1D and basically nothing else of note. This is a poorly constructed hockey team.
Sure seems like a less talented and much less balanced team overall than 21-22. Dubas should be sent down, preferably to the hot dog stand.

Tomorrow will be a tire fire in the market. Marner is an exceptional talent, but didn't help himself tonight. That performative little hissy fit will be seen for what it is, and won't help his reputation at all. The players just need to man up and do it. In the end, it's 10 games. It's concerning, because there's been so little positive so far, and even the elite guys haven't taken over a period, but it remains the kind of start that gets overexposed because it's the start and not some funk in February. I still think they figure it out. I dunno, I've cheered these idiots on for 30+ years, it's hard to phase me.

Also, the Oilers have nothing to do with anything, not sure why they're part of so many Leafs threads.

They can't sign a new goalie anyway, they'd have to go through waivers. That's what happened with that dude last year, so the 50 contract limit is no help.

Hopefully one of Murray or Woll can get healthy.

When you give almost 2/3 of your payroll to 6 players (Matthews, Tavares, Marner, Nylander, Reilly and Brodie) and you complete your lineup with shady players, it gives you the team on the ice .The Toronto Maple Leafs are badly built.

Fine. I’ll throw in my application. Bonus: I understand the Toronto market immensely.

They didn't go into the season with Kallgren, he's their #4. Unfortunately, 2 of their goalies are injured.
They went in with Murray as their number one and he’s been injured a good chunk of the last three years. It’s a little rich to be complaining that he’s injured when it was pretty obvious that it was likely to happen.

No they didn't.

They signed Samsonov who started more games than Matt Murray last year. It was supposed to be a tandem.

Unfortunately both Murray & Woll got injured, Samsonov was under the weather and multiple back to backs so their #4 became their #1 more often than expected.
That explains why they started Samsonov on Opening Night...

And they traded for a $4.7M back-up?

They must have a ton of cap space !
