Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

You went into a season relying on Matt Murray to be your starter. Matt Murray who has been injury riddled for years and was on waivers last year.

No they didn't.

They signed Samsonov who started more games than Matt Murray last year. It was supposed to be a tandem.

Unfortunately both Murray & Woll got injured, Samsonov was under the weather and multiple back to backs so their #4 became their #1 more often than expected.

Call the Leafs 5th string goalie up.

Kallgren lost to SJ, Anaheim & Arizona and didn't put .900 goaltending up against any of those offensively-challenged teams.

1.) Samsonov
2.) Murray - Injured
3.) Woll - Injured
4.) Kallgren - can't put up a .900 against bottom feeders
5.) ?

Fine. We’ll give you Koskinen’s number.

Campbell is way better than any current leafs goalie and makes 300k more than Murray.
Campbell f***ing sucks!

I will be the first to admit the Toronto is goaltending is terrible, but Jack Campbell is a career back up at best.

Whether or not Tavares has played like an $11,000,000 player is irrelevant.

What is relevant is that they already had two other forwards making $11,000,000, and therefore another $11,000,000 forward wasn't a very smart way to construct a roster.
About the bolded: Let's be fair.

Tavares was signed in July 2018.

Matthews received that extension in February 2019.

Marner was signed to that contract in September 2019.

So the Leafs did not have two other forwards making $11M.

And now I will go and wash the finger that typed this...

One thing for certain- We've maybe gained some respect from Cali teams!
If only they could play in the pacific and waltz their way to the cup finals.

So they traded for Murray to make 4.7 million to be their backup? At worst those guys were going to split starts. Either way it was a horrible decision and a massive downgrade in the season leading up to Matthews extension talks.

They have too much talent for this to be prolonged so is this a case of Keefe "losing the room" or something?

I'm no Leafs fan but this current stretch is bizarre.

I don't even think that's true anymore. They have 4 good forwards, a roving idiot as a #1D and basically nothing else of note. This is a poorly constructed hockey team.

It's not a massive downgrade?

Samsonov is outplaying Campbell
Mrazek is injured with a below .900 save %, Murray is injured with a below .900 save % - so it's a wash.

Where's the downgrade?

Call me when Samsonov gives you a .915 and a winning record over 45+ games. He’s never done it in the nhl.

You’re right. The issue is that signing Tavares to that contract inflated salaries for the RFAs.

The Rangers, Penguins, and I believe the Blues as well have all had 4 game losing streaks already. The Leafs are going to be fine. Lots of good teams starting off slow.
