Maybe the Kings have replaced the Ducks as the Leafs preferred trading partner. Maybe having Muzzin and now Clifford, and Campbell, will be enough to change Doughty's position on playing in Toronto. Wishful thinking.
Loved it but different era
How many teams have pure enforcers now?
Honest question;
Did the Leafs just basically re acquire Matt Martin?
People who state what year it is and say things have changed are usually pushing an unpopular narrative. The NHL could easily ban fighting if they wanted to, they won't, and it will become more frequent again in time because that's what the vast majority wants.
I hated Martin, not a single punch landed in either face during that tilt. He tended to wrestle and wait out fights, which is smart I guess but he's not really accomplishing anything.
Does this not give you fond memories?
**** you'd still have Komarov and Polak here along with Martin
I can't imagine how that would happen. Teams don't employ fighters anymore because they can't afford the roster spot to a guy that can't play, and guys that can play shouldn't be getting themselves hurt in fights.
Fighting is going down because fighting makes less and less sense.
Made enough sense to Dubas to part with assets for a rental.
Clifford isn't a healthy scratch making over 2 million a year, so noHonest question;

He can play, and if he fights more than 2-3 times I'll be surprised. I'll be even more surprised if those fights help us win a playoff series.

Martin could play too.
Dubas’ doing a 180 is impressing me. I didn’t think he had it in him to admit he had built a flawed roster.
Fighting has been engineered out because of the worry of lawsuits.
Not necessarily.... but you could have drafted or traded for gritty pieces.
Dubas wasn’t in that mind set.
He invited us to judge his approach of speed and skill over something he couldn’t measure... grit”
We did.
It sucked.
He has started to fix it by moving assets for Clifford and a back up goalie.
Be thankful.

One fourth liner isn't a 180. That's really dumb wishful thinking on your part.
Said many times today, how many guys are around now that can play outside your 4ht line and can play a heavy, gritty game? Not many. Those that are around are coveted by their team. Burke drafted for grit - we've been down that road.
I see it as improving the team - and most LA fans seemed to think they were hosed on the deal.
It’s a 180 to add physicality over speed and skill when you say you don’t buy into physicality.
Repeating over and over that Dubas did a 180 isn't going to convince everyone, just so you knowMartin could play too.

Again, Dubas is not against toughness. He just wont settle for just toughnessSid asked Dubas if Frederik Andersen’s injury played a role in the deal and the GM replied no. This was something he’d been digging at for some time. So too, in response to the question about team toughness, Dubas admitted, contrary to popular belief, the organization did want the kind of grit a player like Clifford provides. It just took time to add the “right” piece, one that could actually play and add that element without sacrificing skill.
Of course it improves the team.
The lack of physicality hurt them.
Dubas created the cream puffs and now he’s added some filling.
Better late than never.
Nice to see he can address the flaws in the roster he created.
Sadly reminds me that we lost colborne because we chose to keep Orr AND MacLaren in the lineup
Amen brother
I’m totally fine with Dubas doing a 180.
Let’s just acknowledge that his plan to out speed and out skill everyone wasn’t going to pan out.
And fortunately he agreed.
I like Colbourne too, but I certainly liked how nobody took liberties on our players that year. Nobody was targeting Kessel's head like the way Marchand did to Marner.
The night we punched Montreal into trading for Parros.
Buffalo Shenanigans.
