why do leafs fans throw JVR in every trade offer like he's a piece of mediocre candy?

if the leafs are gonna make a trade it should be to acquire a top 4 d-man. at this point we have a lot of tier b prospects to offer. not much to offer vet wise.

lol @ something special defensively. No, he's really not. Perfectly fine player, but let's live in the real world please.

One scores more and has great size. The other is a center relied on for important defensive situations.

Our apple is better than your orange. :shakehead

Two completely different players.
One is offensive zone, first unit PP, big scoring winger with 60-70 point potential when healthy. The other one is toughest competition every night, all purpose 2-way C, who is a possession monster, with 40-50 point potential when healthy.

I can see why each fanbase likes their own, but their values are really not far off to be honest.

JVR broke into the NHL a full year earlier than Backlund (which will have an effect on career stats) and .2 is 16 points every NHL season. You talk about .2 like it is a minuscule number, which it isn't.

With all things considered in my above post, it is pretty miniscule, I'm sorry.

JVR's career PPG is less than 0.2 points more than Backlund, while playing in an offensive role with players like Phil Kessel and first unit PP time. I wouldn't brag about how much better he is offensively. When you put things in perspective, it's a lot closer than you think.

Wtf? 0.2ppg is HUGE especially in today's NHL. Its the difference between a 35 point player and a 50 point player. Its the difference between a Jamie Benn or Sidney Crosby production and even like Okposo and Pacioretty production. Especially at that point range (0.63 to 0.46ppg), a 50-60 point player can play 1st line while 35-45 is strictly 2nd liner and below.

When you put in perspective it is actually MUCH further apart then you think, especially when you extrapolate over a whole season or whole careers like that.

Exactly, he's tied for out scoring lead right now again and especially meshing well with Marner. Wont trade him unless we getting something worthwhile back. Backlund is not that "worthwhile" piece.

A 1 for 1 trade wasn't the offer.

This thread gives me hope that we will be able to resign Backlund. The entire eastern conference not knowing who he is will hopefully lower his value.

As a Flames fan I feel like we should all bash him for the next two years haha.

i guess backlund wins the fancy stats battle. 1g and 7pts though in 18 games....doesnt exactly scream "top 6". Bozak with double the points in 2 less games thus far btw

People are perfectly aware of who he is on here. He's just being compared to a 1st liner player in this thread which he unfortunately is not in the same class as. That doesn't mean fans aren't aware of the all around game he brings to the table or that people think he's not a good player.

so ignore JVRs 17pts then? thats top 10 in league scoring. backlund has 1g/7pts.

again, JVR is worth more than the entire return from the flames. leafs pass easily

Yep and if we look at Gardiner's CF60rel, CA60rel and CF%relTM last year and this year, one could could conclude that he has arguably been a better Dman than Giordano, Brodie and Hamilton.

One, jvr is shoe horned into a first line spot, who knows how he is on a better team. We have never seen it.

And two, why can't everyone just say 'we will keep our guy' and have that be the end of it? Backlund is a need for us as we have not many defensive forwards and he's one of the best in the league. Regardless of who, what jvr is

He's performed at first like scoring rate for multiple seasons - we know exactly what type of asset JVR is...

This is such a ridiculous argument for JVR and it gets so tiring. Sure you can use that argument as to why Bozak wasn't a 1st line C all those years when TO "shoe horned" him into that role. He may have been Toronto's 1st line C, but he didn't produce like one so it's clear he never was one. But....JVR has produced like a 1st line player for 5 straight years now. You don't score 30 goals a year because you're forced into that role on a bad team. You produce like a 1st line player year in year out because you're a 1st line talent. Simple as that. Don't use the excuse it's only because the team is bad.

No one is saying the Leafs should take the deal dude, we are simply saying that you (and others) and vastly underrating Backlund (and Frolik). Yes, JVR is better offensively, but Backlund is vastly superior away from the puck. Someone showed you numbers to back up this claim and all you did is write them off as "winning fancy stats". Anyone who has actually watched Backlund the last 3 years will attest to his defensive prowess. But keep arguing a point that no one is disputing, I'm sure it will get you a long ways.
