I'd probably drop Ferland for Marincin as unnecessary but I like the Backlund+Frolik for JVR and Bozak.

We lose a little offence on the wing swap but Backlund is a clear upgrade on Bozak and I think Frolik fits better as a complementary vet winger to a Matthews/Marner or Nylander/Kapanen pairing moving forward.

Can Frolik play the left?

I don't think Calgary would have any interest i Bozak at all. I think in a clear vacuum Calgary would value 2/3rds of a line that's doing very well as oppossed to trading them.

Calgary passes.

Defense....the word you want is defense.

futures are fine too, they're the most liquid asset you can get. JVR is not typically well received on these boards as a trade chip, but if you subbed in "1st round pick + A- prospect" the response gets much warmer and that's where the trade value precedent is for JVR type players:

Ladd last year, Lucic in 2015, Ryan in 2013, etc

Nothing wrong with getting that value into it's most tradeable form if we don't see JVR as part of the long term solution

It's interesting in that it addresses the Leafs team defense woes, at least up front. Ideally there would be a solid defensive d-man in there somewhere which would better address the overall defensive weakness rather than just the weak defense from the forwards.
Not bad value but would prefer a more balanced return.
Also unless one of those forwards are good on the draw the loss of Bozak would almost certainly place the Leafs 30th in F/O %. The other two, Matthews and Kadri are average on their best day.

Did you drink too much?

We lose a good young defenseman, decent fourth liner, a prospect forward who is very much coming into his own, and one of our best goalie prospects

We get a winger who has been labelled as soft and bad defensively (people say the same as Hamilton, is it true about jvr? Likely more to the middle, not the point), a lesser Hamilton who is much smaller, probably less potential, and a forward prospect who is good but seemingly overrated.

So we gain one piece we need for 4 we don't have to give up

This is why other fan bases laugh at us. In what universe is Backlund better than JVR? Come on man.....

Depends how you look at it and what you value. JVR is obviously a more productive forward than Backlund offensively, but Backlund is substantially better than JVR is defensively.

It's not a perfect comparison because Benn isn't as one-dimensional as JVR, but imagine Benn vs. Bergeron. Is Benn really the unquestionably better player because he produces more?

One thing Flame fans vastly overrate is Backlund's defensive game. He is decent defensively, a 3rd liner offensively, and that is it. Last year in the first half of the season he was god awful defensively, then he turned it on in the second half. This year he has been ok but Backlund is no Bergeron, not even close.

The ridiculous downplaying of Backlund needs to stop. Third line forwards don't put up 0.5 ppg in today's substantially lower scoring NHL.

And I'm not going to even touch the defensive part of your post. I mean, if Backlund's merely decent, what does that make Bergeron? Just good? And Monahan, he'd have to be AHL level.
