Surely each has a Cup if they don’t demand to play in their time zone?

As a Bruins fan it’s still a weird division we don’t play the Rangers and barely see the Habs. Ottawa and Buffalo are nothing teams and 2 southern squads.

Why the f*** were Toronto and Detroit so desperate to leave the West? They had the best of all worlds and it’s what 15-20 road games a year that start late?

More travel. Their playoff series would almost always be out of their timezone and in the 1v8 setup, you could easily meet a pacific team in the playoffs.

Late starts suck, and don't call me Shirley.
Chicago got 3 immediate Cups after Detroit moved east. Point proved.

Atlantic division is total nonsense. 2 cap circumvention teams in Florida.

Montreal Detroit Ottawa Toronto Buffalo.

Then Boston. Makes no sense. There’s one rivalry in there Boston Montreal. Toronto and Detroit were Western teams we played once per year. Toronto has more of a rivalry with LA Kings than the Bruins historically.

Blackhawks won in 2010 and 2013 (after beating the Wings in game 7 coming back from behind in the series)

They won 1 cup after we left.

F off with this bullshit. We are not moving to the West. Period. Ever. End of story.
Wasn't the Western era like when you had Gilmour a better period of Leafs hockey? You'd rather suck than have a few more late road games? They won't make the home games later you know? Why not go back to your roots and clean up and make the WFCs regularly?

I mean whatever I'm a Bruins fan and Quebec and Hartford aren't coming back to our division ever. It hasn't hurt us playing Detroit and Toronto more often we get extra original 6 games with teams that don't beat us often.

Chicago won 3 Cups from 2010-2015. I don't know the exact years both teams left but its the immediate aftermath. Leafs and Detroit leave the East and Chicago wins 50% of the Stanley Cups. LA Kings won 2 around then too and that is Toronto's main rival going back to the 93 WCF.

I'm not a Detroit or Toronto fan I like the Bruins just saying they'd be better off than in this weird ass division with Boston, Montreal, 2 cap circumvention Florida teams and then Ottawa and Buffalo as bottom feeders. The division sucks only saving grace is Boston cleans up head to head vs Detroit and Toronto.

The 14-18 Wings were too old and slow to win each year they were falling ass backwards into the playoffs as a wild card team. They werent on the level of Chicago at that point with them not even having a #1 D and two often injured forwards.

Florida was ass for most of the last 10 years.
Montreal Detroit Ottawa Toronto Buffalo.

Montreal, Ottawa and Buffalo were also ass for most of the last 10 years. Buffalo never once made the playoffs, Ottawa made it twice before blowing it up after 2017. Habs had a few playoff appearances but lived and died by Price and were never a real contender.

Toronto has been a paper tiger for years.

Saying Toronto has more of a rivalry with LA is pure clown posting

Would love if NHL divisions were NFL style: 2 conferences with 4 divisions of 4 teams with an emphasis on divisional play, but seeing as the league is talking expansion again, wouldn’t work for too much longer

How? The 1993 Gretzky- Gilmour series is probably the most significant playoff series off the modern era. Last epic year of NHL before dead puck. Last time the Leafs didn't suck. Toronto dipped to the East so they don't play anymore but if they didn't they would play LAK more than Montreal or Boston.

Peak NHL too the league went in the shitter quick after that year.

Detroit was at the end of their run and as @Ezekial pointed out the Hawks win in 2015 was the only Hawk Cup win after Detroit went East. There were also far more than 20 games that started late for EST fans of Detroit. Such as games against the Hawks that started like at 8:30 instead of 7:30 which is a big difference during weekdays when fans are working. Not sure what Cups the Leafs win just because they stay West.

LA and Toronto didn't have a rivalry at all. Takes far more than one series for there to be a rivalry. What does them playing Montreal more mean, as Montreal hasn't been a top contender really any time during the Leafs in the East days?

Great post.

But it wasn’t 93 ECFs

It was WesternConference finals. Toronto lost and has since lost pretty much everything LAK didn’t win that year but have 2 Cups since.

It was 100% Torontos modern day pinnacle too.

Just wouldn’t you rather go through the Western path as Leaf fans? Do you like the current division better? Weird Ottawa Boston Buffalo + Florida cheating the cap teams + Detroit and Montreal.

East coast timezone bias strikes again. Just because the west is past your bedtime doesnt make their teams bad.

Since 2008ish the east has been dominated mostly by one team at a time.. Pittsburgh, Boston, Tampa, and Florida have combined for 11 of 16 finals. And those teams in their years masked what was an otherwise very mediocre group of teams in the east.

Meanwhile the west has seen 3 or so teams that were better than anyone else in the east and all capable of winning the cup if not for running into each other. Detroit, San Jose, Chicago, Los Angeles, Anaheim and then later Dallas, Vegas, Colorado

Posts like this always ignore just how close Philadelphia and New York are. Breaking them up makes as much sense as breaking up LA and Anaheim.

If anything Nashville and Chicago need to move east. Nothing west about either city. Maybe they will by the time we hit 36 teams.
They probably would've been in the east if you hadn't named a region ''the Midwest'' and instead had called it ''the Mideast'', like it is.
