Toronto just traded arguably their best NHL goaltender for a guy who was statistically the worst goaltender in the NHL. I have no idea what this team is doing other than making desperate moves.
Toronto's going to bring up one of the two goalies from the AHL, then eventually the other one. The goalie from Philly is not in their plans. You're right though when you say you have no idea what this team is doing.

They gave up to 1st round draft picks in the teens plus a prospect. Suddenly 1st round picks don't have value on HF Forums??? Or is that only when you have to try and prove a flawed and failing arguement?
They got a top pairing D through his prime and only had to give up non essential assets. No blue chip or high end roster players or lottery picks.

And no, Raddysh isnt at the level of Dobson

8.5 is cheap considering he'll be paying league high taxes. I don't know if he has an accountant or not that is going to get that money into his account in Florida away from the CRA as a signing bonus or something. But he'll take home less than half of that after the agent fee and taxes in Toronto if not.

Toronto got better on D for a 5th round pick.

Team is doing everything it can to compete in the next two years with Matthews under contract because even they're not dumb enough to give him another 7 year contract at 13+ at 31

What exactly was the point of the Philly trade?

To upgrade Benoit to Andrae. Got 4 years younger and Benoit was not very good last year and has awful analytics vs Andrae who many feel is quite good and has more to give and had great underlyings.

They paid Woll to upgrade the D.

To make contracts work Leafs took back their RFA goalie who they can let walk or sign for the AHL.

And to make up the value, Flyers added a 3rd.

If you're upgrading with a one-dimensional 5'9 Smurf on the blue line you're in bigger trouble than I thought.

And lost their second best player and finished fifth last this past year. And now a number of former rebuilding teams have passed them. As I said their days of competing for the Atlantic are in the rear view mirror.
I understand you want what you're saying to be true, but the Leafs had a glitch year. The only thing in their rear view mirror is the glitch year.

Also, for anyone complaining about the power play, here are Raddyshs 5v5 point totals last year. I bet you there's a lot of players (and even forwards) you love with less 5v5 production.

(*around 60 games vs 73)

Nico Hischier, Brady Tkachuk*, Auston Matthews*, Seth Jarvis, Bo Horvat, Dylan Larkin, JT Miller, Sam Reinhart, etc etc all got outscored 5v5 by Raddysh this past off season

I was wrong on trade protection.

There is some protection per JK in his presser. More details to follow I guess.

The biggest mistake is building around low character, very little leadership, players like Matthews and Nylander. Whatever, it's a fine deal in a vacuum (the 8 years is the cost of doing business) but this is not a SC contender. They are gunning for the last wildcard spot, basically. But with no 1st round pick for the next 2 seasons, they have no choice. It's just a shitty situation. Just spinning their wheels.
HV may not agree with you

Yes playing with Kucherov is nice. But he is not the reason that Raddysh shot twice as many 90+ mph shots as anyone else in the league last season. Slap shots are going out of style but this bald man proved that they still have their use. As long as the Leafs have one player who can make a pass that any NHL'er should be able to make, Raddysh will cause a lot of trouble with that shot.

This whole thread summed up...

"Toronto signed the top UFA D who is coming off an outlier season, haha!"

"Oh... they signed him to a fair contract that is somewhere between his normal seasons and his outlier season? Still, haha!"

That's why the game is played on the ice. Habs did ok with a smurf as their #1D. I think Leafs can handle a player lower down the lineup being a bit short (but very stocky).
