Anyone who criticizes this contract should stop watching hockey.

Toronto got an elite top pairing d-man for $5 mil for only prime years and nothing more. This contract is an absolute bargain.
That is bit strong. I really like Brodie and would have been happy if the Flames re-signed him to the same deal but if you expect him to come in as an elite top-pairing dman then you will be disappointed.
The contract is fair, not a huge steal.

Seems like a good signing for the leafs in a few ways - Brodie is a good shot suppressor which is Rielly's Achilles heel so playing them together probably makes a less porous pairing while letting Rielly play to his strengths, the deal is long enough to let the Leafs develop some longer term defense solutions internally while not being long enough to be a real albatross on the back end.

As long as he doesn't suck right away this seems like a really good move

People saying they are out of the "Pietrangelo sweepstakes"... Really were they ever in it? Not without dumping off a big money contract. Hell, they couldn't really even afford to resign Barrie and Pietrangelo is a near Norris level guy. I don't think Toronto is going to be in position to offer something along the lines of $8million+ for him, even if he is a true two-way 1D. Brodie looks like he adds some defensive ability to a blue-line that sorely needed it at a price that while not "cheap" isn't awful and a term that only walks him to his age 34 season. Yeah it has some risk, but it isn't a brutal overpay and it is for a player that fits a need.

You could say that about half of the league’s defensemen, please don’t ever compare Morgan Rielly to Mark Giordano ever again
Not really both of them are elite skaters that can take over a game with that ability. There are not a lot of Dmen in the league that can do that.
I will make any comparison I feel like. If you dislike it you can always block me.

Leafs fans are the most insufferable fans in the hockey world. Trust me I could go on for days. We draw the ire of everybody because of fans like the ones you’re seeing in this thread and everywhere. This team is so f***in far away from contention it’s painful, and if this is Dubas’ only move to fix this trash defense core, may as well write off next season.

So basically added Brodie/Simmonds and got rid of Kapanen and probably Johnsson soon since this past years disappointing year... and still need to sign Dermott and Mikheyev but are currently 3 mill over...

I'll be curious what else Dubas will do here

Yup and when the season starts u have to be under. So again good luck finding a team to take on that kind of salary in this flat cap market.

Are you really telling me Andreas Johnsson has no value. Hell even if we had to waive him, im more than certain someone would claim him.

I do not care for Dubas. It’s insane to think you can win while paying 4 forwards half of the cap.
However, do you not believe that we now have 3 legitimate top four dmen, one of whom actually plays on the right side? I’m hoping we can land one more top four dman (maybe Savard?). Also hoping we would trade Nylander for help on d and the bottom six.

Why are they paying Brodie 5 million ? How in God's name did he ever warrant that kind of contract ? He was literally useless without Mr Bean.
