People saying they are out of the "Pietrangelo sweepstakes"... Really were they ever in it? Not without dumping off a big money contract. Hell, they couldn't really even afford to resign Barrie and Pietrangelo is a near Norris level guy. I don't think Toronto is going to be in position to offer something along the lines of $8million+ for him, even if he is a true two-way 1D. Brodie looks like he adds some defensive ability to a blue-line that sorely needed it at a price that while not "cheap" isn't awful and a term that only walks him to his age 34 season. Yeah it has some risk, but it isn't a brutal overpay and it is for a player that fits a need.

After the way Barrie played for us, I hope it was never in the plans to even think about resigning him.

That's good. I don't think anyone was under the impression he plays defence by himself.

You thought wrong. Dubas obviously targeted a guy who can play LD and RD so he can play 1D 4F at even strength. Why do you think he went for LD/RD in Lehtonen as well?

He would but then who plays with Rielly?

Look I agree Holl is bottom pair at best.

But Holl works with Muzzin this was clearly about finding Rielly a legitimate partner and they did that.

I'm not following....Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin- Lehtonen

Lehtonen has played the right side and stated at times he prefers it. He likes to lead the rush and Muzzin seems like a great partner for him.

This is a solid deal. Still think the Leafs need to reshuffle some deck chairs in the bottom six and bring in some physical defensively responsible forwards, but Dubas has had a good day.

Travis Dermott is an RFA so he isn't in there and Brodie is either a #2 or a 3-4 depending on who you talk to. Either way right now the Leafs D is better than the Bruins.

Dermott, Liljegren in the 3rd grouping as well. Marincin in the 4th obviously.

well I never said it wasn’t for starters

but yeah I’d agree with the tiers for each team, you didn’t put in Gryz who is a 2nd pair guy perhaps not as good as Brodie but yeah idk pretty close overall as far as the two groups go, if Krug isn’t replaced at all then I’d probably agree with you

That's fair, I also have Lehtonen as a top 4 but having not transitioned yet slotted him as a bottom pair

Second unit PK for the most part.
His weakness is the tendency to make bad decisions and costly turnovers (because he has the puck a lot), which has limited his PK 1 exposure in Calgary.

He'll probably be PK 1 for us regardless then. He can't possibly turn it over more then our D

Just watch, Toronto fans will chase him out like Barrie, Gardner and the others tried with Reilly.
Barrie had one year. No one "chased him out" the Leafs just can't afford a defender who will command the kind of cap hit he will get. The only reason we were able to ice him last season was because Colorado retained salary.

As for Gardiner... Game 7 Boston... multiple years. Name any fanbase who would be thrilled about resigning him at an increased cap hit after that?

Brodie will look great, if partnered with Rielly, otherwise he'll be lacking. If the Leafs use him right they'll be happy with the signing.
